Dieback of pine branches or twigs with brown needles occurs most commonly on Pinus species after severe winter in Korea. In this study, Cenangium ferruginosum was isolated from infected stems, branches, and twigs of Pinus koraiensis (C1), P. densiflora (C2), and P. thunbergii (C3). Morphological and cultural characteristics of the isolates were than compared. There were no significant differences in the morphological characteristics of conidia and ascospores produced by the three isolates. However, cultural differences were observed among the isolates. Optimum temperatures for mycelial growth of C1, C2, and C3 were 15, 20, and $20^{\circ}$, respectively. C1 produced a few conidia and no ascospores, while C2 and C3 produced abundant ascospores and conidia. While optimum temperatures for mycelial growth ranged from 15 to $20^{\circ}$, mycelial growth was also relatively good at lower temperatures of 5-$10^{\circ}$. Conidiomata and conidia were produced on MSA (malt extract soya peptone agar) after 25-30 days of incubation in the dark at $15^{\circ}$. Apothecia were produced by altering culture condition from 15 to $20^{\circ}$, and incubating for 35-60 more days. Optimum temperature for ascospore and conidium germination was $20^{\circ}$. RAPD analysis revealed that there was high similarity of 0.78 between C2 and C3, and low similarity of 0.31 between C2 or C3 and C1.
Red pine (Pinus densiflora) is a dominant tree species in Korean forests. The diversity of endophytic fungi was investigated by isolating fungi from different parts of a red pine tree during the fall and spring seasons. One hundred and fifty-two strains of endophytic fungi were isolated and classified into 42 species belonging to 29 genera. Among these, 74 (49%), 47 (31%) and 31 strains (20%) were isolated from branches, leaves, and stems, respectively. The most frequently isolated species were Daldinia childiae and Biscogniauxia maritima (28.9% and 9.8%, respectively). D. childiae was the dominant endophytic fungus on branches (20 strains) and leaves (19 strains). B. maritima was most frequently isolated from branches. The isolation frequencies on stems of B. maritima (6 strains) and D. childiae (5 strains) were also high. Fifty-seven isolates belonging to 19 species and 17 genera were isolated in the spring, and 95 strains belonging to 35 species and 24 genera were isolated in the fall. D. childiae was the most frequently isolated fungus in both spring and fall (21 and 23 strains, respectively). B. maritima was also frequently isolated in both spring (7 strains) and fall (8 strains).

In this study, 64 Korean herbal medicines have been investigated with an in vitro evaluation systems using glycation end products (AGEs) formation inhibitory activity. Of these, 30 herbal medicines ($IC_{50}<50{\mu}g/ml$) were found to have significant AGEs formation inhibitory activity. Of these, four herbal medicines ($IC_{50}<5{\mu}g/ml$) were found to have significant AGEs formation inhibitory activity. Particularly, Cornus controversa (branches and leaves), Acer ginnala (stems and leaves), Platycarya strobilacea (flowers) and Picrasma quassioides (stems), showed more potent inhibitory activity (approximately 17-27 fold) than the positive control aminoguanidine ($IC_{50}=77.04{\mu}g/ml$).
rust fungus, Uromyces truncicola, infected stems, branches and leaves of Sophora japonica trees, and 78% of planted host depending on investigated sites. Teliospores of this fungus were reddish brown, global to oval and $29-37{\times}24-27\;{\mu}m$. The urediniospores were yellowish brown, elliptical to oval with spiny surface and $28-39{\times}19-22\;{\mu}m$. In the infected branches cork layers were thickened, ray parenchymatous cells were distorted, branched or combined and increased in numbers. While ray parenchymatous cells in healthy branches were one or two layers, the cells in the infected branches were three or more layers to shape fusiform. In the infected branches xylem tissues also distorted and yellowish pigments formed in the intercellular space. In the less infected trees the hairs on the branches were dense and long, and the thickness of upper epidermal cell walls were ca 23.3 ${\mu}m$, while in the highly infected trees the hairs were less dense and short, and the thickness of upper epidermal cell walls was ca 17.4 ${\mu}m$. We think individual host trees resistant to this fungus are present.

As part of the research for the natural products about prostate-related disease, this study screened 159 plant species from 46 families, which included a total of 213 different kinds of local native plants and these plants were tested for the ability to inhibit LNCaP proliferation, an androgen-sensitive prostate cancer cell line, and DU145 proliferation, which is a more aggressive androgen-insensitive prostate cancer cell line. The results indicated that nineteen of 213 types of plants exhibited antiproliferative activity (cell viability < 30%, $500{\mu}g/mL$) on the growth of androgen-sensitive LNCaP cell lines, and five of them exhibited DU145 cell antiproliferative activity (cell viability < 30%, $500{\mu}g/mL$). The methanol extracts of Eurya emarginata (stems), Gleditsia japonica var. koraiensis (leaves), Photinia glabra (leaves) and Elaeagnus macrophylla (leaves) showed antiproliferative activity on both the androgen-sensitive LNCaP cells (cell viability < 30%) and androgen-insensitive DU145 cells (cell viability > 100%). The study also found that the methanol extracts of Styrax japonica (fruits), Aralia continentalis (leaves), Fagus crenata var. multinervis (stems), Thuja orientalis (stems) and Poncirus trifoliate (branches) presented the strongest activity and demonstrated potent antiproliferative activity on both cell lines (LNCaP and DU145 cell viability < 30%).
To know the effects of weeding periods (weeding from 12 days, 28 days and 42 days after seeding to harvest, and weeding from seeding to 14 days, 28 days and 42 days after seeding) and growing conditions such as transparent polyethylene film mulch (P.E. mulch) and bare soil on growth and yield of peanuts, "Yeongho-Tangkong" was planted on May 10, 1984. Under P.E. mulch, the number of weeds was higher, but the weed dry weight was lower than in bare soil by the middle of July. Sixty days after seedings, the length of main stems in weedy check plots was longer, but shoot dry weight was lower compared to weed free plot. In the correlation coefficients between weed dry weight and the shoot dry weight of peanut on July 14, the growth retardation of peanuts due to weeds was showed earlier under P.E. mulch than in bare soil. Shoot dry weight, shelling ratio, number of seeds per pod, 100 pod weight, and seed yield were higher under P.E, mulch compared to bare soil. But weed dry weight, length of branches, number of pod bearing branches, number of pods per square meters, and pod yield were similar between P.E. mulch and bare soil. Shoot dry weight of peanuts, length of branches, number of pod bearing branches, number of pods per square meters, pod yield, 100 pod weight, 100 seed weight, and seed yield in weed free plots from 28 days after seeding to harvest (28 DAS-Harvest) were higher compared to weed free plots from 42 DAS-Harvest. However, in the weed free plot from seeding to 42 days after seeding seed yield was lower than that of the continuous weeding plot due to lower number of pod bearing branches and number of pods per square meters. When weed was not controlled at the later growth stages of peanuts, reduction in seed yield due to weeds was greater in bare soil than that under P.E. mulch.
A total of 45 Pinus sylvestnis var. mongolica trees from 9 plots in northeast China were destructively sampled to develop aboveground prediction equations for inventory application. Sampling plots covered a range of stand ages (12-47-years-old) and densities (450-3,840/ha). The distribution of aboveground biomass of whole-trees and tree component (stems, branches and leaves) of individual trees were studied and 4 equations were developed as functions of diameter at breast height (DBH), total height (HT). All the equations have good estimation effect with high prediction precision over 90%. Forest biomass was estimated based on the individual biomass prediction equations. It was found forest biomass of all organs increased with the increasing of stand age and density. And the period of 45-50 years was the suitable harvest time for Pinus sylvesris plantation.
Allometric equations for biomass measurement of the shrub species, Lindera obtusiloba, were developed. The allometric equations between $(BD)^2H$ and dry weight of leaves ($W_I$), stems and branches ($W_{sb}$), roots ($W_r$) and total weight ($W_t$) of the Lindera obtusiloba were as follows: $W_I=0.7318\;(BD^2H)^{0.6108},\;W_{sb}=0.6067(BD^2H)^{0.8355},\;W_r=0.4524(BD^2H)^{0.7608},\;W_t=1.672 (BD^2H)^{0.7664}$. The $R^2s$ between $(BD)^2H\;and\;W_I,\;W_{sb},\;W_r\;and\;W_t$ of the Lindera obtusiloba were 0.9251, 0.9571, 0.9353 and 0.9546, respectively. Root weight of this Lindera obtusiloba was about 38% of the aboveground biomass.
A new bacterial disease was found on trees of peach(Prunus persica var. vulgaris Max) at Kumho Kyungbuk in April 1999. The disease usually occured on over wintered buds branchs and stems of the Cheon-Hong cultivar. The buds died without sprouting and the branches showed entire wilting Droplets of bacterial ooze was occasionally running down the surface of diseased plants under moist condition. Artificial needle prick inoculation with isolates obtained from branchs of naturally infected plants produced symptoms similar to those occuring under natural condition. On the basis of bacteriological characteristics and pathogenicity on the host plant of the organism the causal bacterium was identified as Xanthomonas arboricora pv. pruni and this disease was proposed to name "Bacterial branch blight of the peach tree"

According to the results from the experiments of selecting a suitable variety of forage rape and comparing productivity and nutrient quality between forage rape and oil seed rape, Velox appeared to be the most suitable variety in terms of productivity and nutrient quality at the southern area of Korea among the varieties used in the experiments. Consequently, Velox was grown under two different cultural methods, individual culture and population culture, and productivity and variation of nutrient quality during the growth period were observed and compared between the cultural methods. The results from the experiment are summarized as follows: 1. Although variations were great in plant fresh weight and plant dry matter weight among plants, individual culture showed significantly higher value in these characters at the 1 % level than population culture. Plant fresh weight and plant dry matter weight were largely dependent upon the amount of branches in case of individual culture. However, in population culture, they were equally dependent upon the amount of branches and main stem. There was no significant difference in dry matter percentage between cultural methods, and main stem showed highest dry matter percentage. 2. Content of crude protein was decreasing gradually as plants continued to grow. Individual culture showed higher content of crude protein than population culture from 90 to 120 days after sowing but vice versa from 180 days after sowing to flowering stage. Contents of fiber such as NDF, ADF, cellulose and lignin was low at the early stage of growth. It was increasing gradually as plants grew older and at the latter stage of growth plants under individual culture showed higher values in contents of fiber. 3. In vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) of both stems and leaves was decreasing gradually as plants grew older. Plants under individual culture showed higher IVDMD of stems than plants under population culture, but no significant difference in IVDMD of leaves was observed between cultural methods.
