Cytotoxic Constituents from the Stem Bark of Chisocheton pentandrus

  • Eight cytotoxic constituents, consisting of six triterpenoids, cabralealactone (1), cabraleadiol (2), prototiamin A (3), 23-desmethyllimocin B (5), melianodiol (7) and indicalilacol (8) along with one limonoid, neemfruitins A (4) and one protolimonoid, protoxylocarpin G (6), were isolated from the extract of n-hexane of the stembark of Chisocheton pentandrus. The chemical structures were identified on the basis of spectroscopic evidence and compared to previously reported spectra. These isolated compounds appear for the first time in the plant. Compounds 1 - 8 were evaluated for their cytotoxic effect against MCF-7 breast cancer lines in vitro. Among the isolated compounds, melianodiol (7) showed the strongest cytotoxic activity with IC50 values of 16.8 µM.

A Comparison of Phenolic Components in Cinnamon Medicines

  • As a result of comparing the phenolic components of cinnamon medicines, the total phenolic component content of Cinnamomi Cortex in China was about 2.65 times higher than that of Cinnamomi Cortex in Vietnam. In addition, the total phenolic component content of Vietnamese Cinnamomi Cortex Spissus was about 1.80 times higher than that of Chinese Cinnamomi Cortex Spissus. Meanwhile, Vietnamese Cinnamomi Ramulus showed a content about 3.29 times higher than that of Chinese Cinnamomi Ramulus. Cinnamaldehyde, the main component of cinnamon medicines, showed the same tendency as the total phenolic component content. In terms of the average content of the total phenolic components, Cinnamomi Cortex showed the highest content at 23964 ㎍/g, followed by Cinnamomi Cortex Spissus at 17489 ㎍/g and Cinnamomi Ramulus at 5435.8 ㎍/g. These results showed that Cinnamomi Cortex and Cinnamomi Cortex Spissus with stem bark as usage sites had about 3.22 to 4.41 times higher content of phenolic components than Cinnamomi Ramulus with young branches as usage sites.

Effects of Albizia julibrissin Durazz through Suppression of Mitochondrial Fission and Apoptosis in Cisplatin-induced Acute Kidney Injury

  • Albizia julibrissin Durazz. (AJ; family Minosaceae) is widely distributed worldwide, and its stem bark has been used as a traditional herbal medicine. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a clinical syndrome that results in sudden loss of renal function. This study aimed to investigate the effects of AJ against cisplatin-induced AKI using a human kidney proximal tubule epithelial cell line (HK-2) and cisplatin-treated mice. In vitro, cisplatin treatment increased apoptosis in HK-2 cells. However, AJ treatment decreased apoptosis of cisplatin-treated HK-2 cells. In vivo, cisplatin treatment accelerated renal injury by increasing the levels of renal injury markers, such as blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, kidney injury molecule 1, and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin, which were reversed by AJ treatment. Histopathologically, AJ treatment resulted in decreased renal damage with less tubular necrosis and brush border desquamation compared with the AKI group. Additionally, cisplatin treatment upregulated mitochondrial fission, a pathological characteristic of AKI, which was downregulated by AJ treatment. Along with increased mitochondrial fission, AJ treatment also reduced cisplatin-induced apoptosis. These results suggest that AJ may be a potential therapeutic agent for cisplatin-induced AKI.

  • This study aimed to explore research on bibliometric features of cannabis by applying scientometric analysis method, and to approach experimental research evaluation based on it. A total of 30,352 articles on cannabis published since 2001 from SCOPUS were analyzed using KnowledgeMatrix Plus and VOSviewer software. Results showed differences in research activities in countries where cannabis is legalized (Canada, the United States, the Netherlands) and Asian countries where its use is illegal. Related to medical cannabis, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of studies on pain, epilepsy, seizures and brain diseases such as multiple sclerosis. In the field of basic research, the number of pharmacological studies of cannabis on the cannabinoid type 1 receptor signaling pathway and inflammation and obesity has increased significantly. Subsequent experimental studies have compared the anti-inflammatory effects of four parts of Korean cannabis such as root, stem, leaf, and bark. Consistent with the predicted results of the scientometric analysis, all parts of C. sativa showed inhibitory effects on COX-2, NO/iNOS and TNF-α expression in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. These attempts provide an experimental research approach based on scientometric assessment.

Stem Girding Increases Seed Production and Nitrogenous Compounds in Larix leptolepis (환상박피 처리에 의한 일본잎갈나무의 착과유도 효과와 질소 화합물 함량의 증가)

  • Japanese larch (Larix leptolepis) has been extensively planted in Korea as a reforestation species but their supply has been a major bottleneck due to sporadic natural seed production. In this study, stem girdling was applied to 32-year-old grafted Japanese larches, resulting in significantly enhanced seed production compared to the controls. Stem girdling induced about 4 times higher cone production than that of controls in the Japanese larch seed orchard. Time-dependent metabolic alterations after girdling were investigated by stable isotope ratio mass spectrometer, HPLC, and GC-MS analysis. In girdled trees, the contents of total nitrogen, sucrose, and total free amino acids were significantly higher than the non-girdled trees at the flowering differentiation season (from July to August). Moreover, the numbers of female strobilus per tree were positively correlated with the contents of both total nitrogen (r=0.765, p<0.01) and total amino acids (r=0.802, p<0.01) in the bark being collected at the flowering differentiation time (August 20). Interestingly, the levels of various individual amino acids at the flowering differentiation times, such as aspartic acid, glutamic acid, glycine, serine, and cysteine, were also significantly correlated (p<0.05) with the numbers of strobilus, suggesting that those amino acids might be involved in the induction of female strobilus formation of Japanese larches.

  • The cultural characteristics and some factors such as nutrient sources and supplements effecting on mycelial growth and density were investigated to study the possibility of an artificial cultivation of P. cocos. The optimum pH for P. cocos was 4.0-4.5. The optimal growth temperature ranged from $25^{\circ}C$ to $29^{\circ}C$. Myceial growth of P. cocos was better in SPD than PD media. Adding the nurient sources such as dextrose, yeast and potato infusion to pine extract media practically stimulated the mycelial growth and density of P. cocos comparing to pine extract media alone. When P. cocos was cultured on sawdust media added 3 different supplements composed of corn meal, rice bran and wheat bran, corn meal was the best and its percentage was 30 (w/w) for mycelial growth. On culturing in sawdust media added by varying the mixture ratio of them, the media mixed corn meal and wheat bran (3:1, w/w) supported more vigours for mycelial growth. In inoculation test to pine stem, the fungal growth was good in under or inside pine bark and xylem, but the sclerotium was not observed in the stem. Mycelial growth was also observed in central part of pine stem by cross section.

Aboveground Biomass and Nutrient Distribution of Korea Pine (Pinus koraiensis) Advance Growth in Deciduous Oak Forests (참나무림내 천연발생한 잣나무 치수의 지상부 현존량 및 양분분포)

  • The occurrence of Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) advance growth has been noticed in the deciduous oak forest being adjacent to the mature Korean pine plantation. the korean pine seedlings in the forest were regenerated naturally from harvested and transported Korean pine seeds and cones by rodents, mainly red squirrels. Mongolian oak (Quercus bariabilis), which formed dominant overstory, had close-to-normal distributions of height, diameter and age classes. Korean pine, which dominated the understory, had the reverse J-shaped height, diameter and age distributions that are expected of a shade tolerant species. Growing in the summer shade of the oak, Korean pine seedling had slow, but steady height growth during the past four decades. Total biomass of Korean pine seedling ranged from $2,835-8,541kg\;ha^{-1}$ and biomass allocation of Korean pine seedling was follows : stem (with bark) > foliage > branches > roots. Korean pine seedlings allocated more biomass to foliage and branches compare to planted Korean pine. The smaller root/shoot ratio of Korean pine seedling in the site is to believed to be result of competition for light. Contents of N and K for Korean pine seedling were greatest in foliage follow by branches, stem ad roots, while content of P was greater in the order of foliage > roots > stem > branches.

Allometric Equations for Estimating the Carbon Storage of Maple Trees in an Urban Settlement Area (정주지 단풍나무의 탄소저장량 추정 상대생장식)

  • Using the logarithmic methods and the generalized method of moments (GMM), this study developed carbon storage equations for maple trees (Acer palmatum Thunb.) planted in an urban settlement area. A total of 20 maple trees of various ages and diameters were destructively harvested to determine their dry weight and carbon concentration by component. The allometric equations with DBH and DBH2×H as independent variables were developed to estimate the carbon storage for each tree component. The carbon concentration of tree components was the highest in stem wood (49.8%) and lowest in stem bark (46.5%). Allometric equations to estimate the carbon storage of tree components (stem, root, aboveground, and total) showed a similar coefficient of determinations (R2) between the allometric equations of the logarithmic method (0.7494-0.9036) and the GMM (0.7085-0.8847). However, the R2 values of the leaves and branches were in the range of 0.3027 to 0.6380, lower than those of the R2 of the other tree components. These results indicate that the carbon storage of maple trees growing in urban settlement areas can be efficiently predicted from the equations of GMM methods in the case of a small sample size or the heteroscedasticity of logarithmic equations.

A Study on the Structure of Biomass Production in Thrifty-Mature Quercus mongolica Stand (신갈나무 장령임분(壯齡林分)의 물질생산(物質生産) 구조(構造)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • This study was conducted to explain the characters of the structure of biomass production in the thrifty-mature Quercus mongolica stands and investigate the relationships between the leaf weight or leaf area and the sapwood area in the bole. Also we intended to identify the allocation ratio of stem, branches, and leaves or heartwood, sapwood and bark in trees and the characters of productive structure of stem and leaf biomass by the tree height. The results obtained were as follows : 1. The allocation ratio of biomass based on dry weight was 70-84% in stem, 11-25% in branches, and 3-6% in leaves. 2. In the bole, the ratios of composition of heartwood, sapwood, and bark were showed 37-43%, 38-46%, and 16-19%, respectively. 3. The volume of sapmood was exceeded more than that of heartwood in dominant and intermediate trees, while it was reversely appeared in suppressed trees. 4. The weight and area of leases significantly correlated with the sectional area of sapwood in bole (r>0.9. 1% significant level). 5. The ratio of leaf area($m^2$) to sapwood areal($cm^2$), k varied 0.35 to 2.05. 6. The basal diameter and the cross sectional area of a branch significantly correlated with the leaf weight r>0.9. 1% significant level. 7. The leaf weight in a tree is showed a normal distribution curve and the accumulative volume of bole is showed a tapering type.

  • In order to understand the growth percentage of red pine, author had 207 trees cut and made stem analysis on them and there by studied and analysed volume growth percentage, bark volume percentage, diameter growth percentage and the relation between diameter growth percentage and volume growth percentage and so forth. The result was as follows. 1. The volume growth percentage decreased as the age class increased and it was about 3% at the cutting age. 2. Bark volume percentage was about 5~15% and it seemed to be about constant irrespective of the age class. 3. The diameter growth percentage gradually decreased as the age class increased and it would be constant from a certain age class on. 4. As for the relation between the diameter growth percentage and volume growth percentage, the correlation ratio showed to increase with the age class increase generally the value of b was between 2.0~3.6.
