  • The seismic behavior of framed structure with Chevron-type bucking restrained braces were investigated and their behavior factors were evaluated following the procedure proposed in ATC-19 & ATC-34. Two types of structures, building frame systems and dual systems, with 4, 8, 12, and 16 stories were designed per the IBC 2000, the AISC LRFD and the AISC/SEAOC Recommended Provisions for BRBF. Nonlinear static pushover analyses were carried out to observe the plastic hinge formation and to identify the loads and the displacements at the yield and the ultimate states. Time history analyses were also carried out to compute the permanent displacement md the dissipated hysteretic energy. According to the analysis results, the response modification factors of model structures fumed out to be larger than what is proposed in the provision in low story structures, and a little smaller in medium-story structures. The dual systems, even though designed with smaller seismic load, showed superior static and dynamic performances.

  • Regarding some of the components of the Korean Tilting Train eXpress(TTX), the lightweight-vehicle development was mainly focused to this study, and so as using the materials, the existing material, steel or aluminum carbody was changed to the composite carbody with both design and manufacturing methods. Therefore the evaluation of the performance of joint strength between composite and metallic boundary area, especially the under frame and the carbody was required, and the compressive and the bending tests were conducted as the sub-scale specimen. In this evaluation, there was involved the sufficient strengths at the joint area between the underframe and the carbody, and is resulted as the increment of the safety factor through the observation of failure conditions.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose an analytical model for the simulation of the hysteretic behavior of RC (reinforced concrete) beam-column subassemblages under various loading histories. The discrete line element with inelastic rotational springs is adopted to model the different locations of the plastic hinging zone. The hysteresis model can be adopted for a dynamic two-dimensional inelastic analysis of RC frame structures. From the analysis of test results it is found that the stiffness deterioration caused by inelastic loading can be simulated with a function of basic pinching coefficients, ductility ratio and yield strength ratio of members. A new strength degradation coefficient is proposed to simulate the inelastic behavior of members as a function of the transverse steel spacing and section aspect ratio. The energy dissipation capacities calculated using the proposed model show a good agreement with test results within errors of 27%.

  • In this study, free vibration analysis of laminated composite parabolic thick plate frames by using finite element method is introduced. Governing equations of an eigenvalue problem are obtained from First Order Shear Deformation Theory (FSDT). Finite element method is employed to obtain natural frequency values from the governing differential equations. The frames consist of two flat square plates and one singly curved plate. Parameters like radii of curvature, aspect ratio, ply orientation and boundary conditions are investigated to understand their effect on dynamic behavior of such a structure. In addition, multi-bay structures of such geometry with different stacking order are also taken into account. The composite frame structures are also modeled and simulated via ANSYS to verify the accuracy of the present study.

  • This paper presents the results of experimental investigations on the response control performance of tuned liquid damper(TLD). Steel frame building model is used for the experiments. Shaking table is controled by velocity consol. Experimental variables are mass ratios(${\mu}=mass$ of TLD/mass of structure), shape ratio(depth of water/ length of TLD), number of nets(N) and tuned frequency ratio($f_l/f_s$). Results show that the greater the mass ratio is, the better the control performance is. So, it can be concluded that TLD is able to be used as a device of vibration control in the remodeling of existing buildings that are not designed to resist earthquake

  • This study develops a new hybrid passive energy dissipation device for seismic rehabilitation of an existing structure. The device is composed of a friction damper combined with a steel plate with vertical slits as a hysteretic damper. Analytical model is developed for the device, and the capacity of the hybrid device to satisfy a given target performance is determined based on the ASCE/SEI 7-10 process. The effect of the device is verified by nonlinear dynamic analyses using seven earthquake records. The analysis results show that the dissipated inelastic energy is concentrated on the hybrid damper and the maximum interstory drift of the SMRF with damping system satisfies the requirement of the current code.

  • This research is related with the development of CNC spinning machine. The purpose is to use for developing the practical parts of automobile such as dams, pulley, etc. The machine structure is made by heavy duty frame for the steel products with high strength. The hydraulic servo system is applied for giving the exactness of control. In order to improve the spinnability, the involute curves can be generated in CNC program In the future, this spinning machine is applicable to development of all the parts of industry such as electric parts, automobile parts, aerospace and the military supplies.

  • The paper describes a test program on welded K-joints fabricated from circular hollow section brace members and chords made with API 2W 50 grade steel produced by POSCO. The K-joints were tested for three loading conditions at RIST. The specimens were tested in reaction frame that allowed vertical uniform loading to the structure. From the test, the crack initiation and development were observed and the fatigue failure could be predicted. The results were also compared with the provided S-N curves by DnV.

  • The PSC box bridge constructed of concrete, reinforcing bar and tendon is a complex structure that exhibits tension cracks, nonlinear behaviour of steel and time dependent behaviour of concrete. The frame element is commonly used for construction stage analysis PSC bridges. However, the frame element does not show sufficient information when in the curved PSC box bridges. For the case of curved PSC bridges, the deformations in the inner and outer web are different. In this case, different jacking forces are required in the inner and outer webs. However, it is impossible to calculate different jacking forces if we use the frame element for construction stage analysis. In order to overcome this problem, the use of the shell element is essential for a three-dimensional construction stage analysis of PSC bridges. In the following, the formulation of a Quasi-conforming shell element and its application of PSC box girder bridge analysis are presented.
