An Estimation of Equivalent Heat Source for Thermal Analysis of Steel Deck Bridge under Pavement Procedure (강바닥판 교량의 포장시 열영향 해석을 위한 등가열원 산정기법)

  • Since the temperature of asphalt for deck plate of steel bridge during paying procedure is relatively high as $240^{\circ}C\;to\;260^{\circ}C$, the temperature of deck plate of bridge rises mere than $100^{\circ}C$ and excessive displacement and stress could occur. In order to avoid undesirable failure of base plate and determine the optimal pavement pattern, a thorough thermal analysis is needed. General structural model which is made of beam and plate element should be modified for transient heat transfer analysis; asphalt pavement material and convection effect on surface of structure need to be added. A new technique with the Equivalent Heat Source (EHS) for numerical thermal analysis for steel bridge under thermal load of Guss asphalt pavement is proposed. Since plate/beam elements which were generally used for structural analysis for bridge cannot explain convection effect easily on plate/beam surface, EHS which is determined based on calculated temperature with convection effect is used. To verify the EHS proposed in this study, numerical analyses with plate elements are performed and the results are compared with estimated temperatures. EHS might be used for other thermal analyses of steel bridge such as welding residual stress analysis and bridge fire analysis.

A Study for Relation Between Fatigue and Structural Members on Othortropic Steel Deck (직교이방성 강바닥판 피로와 구조부재의 관계에 대한 연구)

  • Improvement of steel material quality made fatigue problems more critical than failure of the material itself. In many cases, cracks on the welded parts of steel deck bridges are reported against the failure of steel materials. And the cracks are caused by alternate stress on the welded parts due to live loads on the bridge. The range of alternate stress on the welded part is related to property of the sections which compose othortropic steel deck. Othortropic steel deck is mainly composed of deck plate, ribs and floor beams, wearing surface, etc. In this paper, a methology to estimate the alternate stress for pthortropic steel deck using Pelikan-Esslinger method and signed Von-Mises equivalent stress is proposed first. Parametric study served references for fatigue stresses when designing or repairing othortropic steel deck bridges, by analyzing relationship between alternate stress range and properties of steel deck members.

  • Because of the different flexural rigidity between longitudinal and transverse direction, orthotropic plate theory may be suitable for describing the behavior of composite deck. The ratio of flexural rigidity between longitudinal and transverse direction affects the live load moment. Because of the ratio of flexural rigidity of concrete unfilled steel grid deck has a direct relationship with main bearing bar spacing, it is concluded that the study for the distribution factor which is effected by main bearing bar spacing and aspect ratio is needed. In this study, evaluate the live load moment of concrete unfilled steel grid deck using the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specification and presents the distribution coefficient equation for concrete unfilled steel grid deck.

  • Due to their light weight, high stiffness-to-weight and strength-to-weight ratios, and potentially high resistance to environmental degradation, resulting in lower life-cycle costs, polymer composites, are increasingly being considered for use in civil infrastructure applications. Recently, an FRP deck has been installed on a state highway, located in New York State. In this study, a thermal stress analysis was conducted using finite element method to study failure mechanisms of the superstructure. This analysis evaluated small and large temperature gradient effects on the FRP deck considering lightweight of FRP deck and ply orientations at the interface between steel girders and FRP deck Finite element model was verified using the load tests of the bridge deck. Finally, the analytical results shows the possible failure mechanism of FRP deck under various temperature changes and its corresponding index is suddenly varied depending on the rapid change of temperature on the deck plate.

  • In this paper, the static load test of long span PSC deck used in the twin steel plate girder bridge was conducted. To evaluate the structural behavior of long span deck, longitudinally sufficient length of deck is needed, but it is difficult to test the full-scale long span deck due to limit of transportation, setting and laboratory space. Therefore, this study proposed a method to apply longitudinal stiffness of the full-scale deck to the test specimen of longitudinally short length, and it was reinforced with the steel beam. The failure behavior and structural performance of the long span deck were evaluated by the proposed test specimen deck.

Reliability-based assessment of steel bridge deck using a mesh-insensitive structural stress method

  • This paper aims to conduct the reliability-based assessment of the welded joint in the orthotropic steel bridge deck by use of a mesh-insensitive structural stress (MISS) method, which is an effective numerical procedure to determine the reliable stress distribution adjacent to the weld toe. Both the solid element model and the shell element model are first established to investigate the sensitivity of the element size and the element type in calculating the structural stress under different loading scenarios. In order to achieve realistic condition assessment of the welded joint, the probabilistic approach based on the structural reliability theory is adopted to derive the reliability index and the failure probability by taking into account the uncertainties inherent in the material properties and load conditions. The limit state function is formulated in terms of the structural resistance of the material and the load effect which is described by the structural stress obtained by the MISS method. The reliability index is computed by use of the first-order reliability method (FORM), and compared with a target reliability index to facilitate the safety assessment. The results achieved from this study reveal that the calculation of the structural stress using the MISS method is insensitive to the element size and the element type, and the obtained structural stress results serve as a reliable basis for structural reliability analysis.

Service and Ultimate Load Behavior of Bridge Deck Reinforced with GFRP Rebars (GFRP 보강근으로 보강된 교량 바닥판의 성능과 사용성에 관한 실험연구)

  • The tensile and bond performance of GFRP rebar are different from those of conventional steel reinforcement. It requires some studies on concrete members reinforced with GFRP reinforcing bars to apply it to concrete structures. GFRP has some advantages such as high specific strength, low weight, non-corrosive nature, and disadvantage of larger deflection due to the lower modulus of elasticity than that of steel. Bridge deck is a preferred structure to apply FRP rebars due to the increase of flexural capacity by arching action. This paper focuses on the behavior of concrete bridge deck reinforced with newly developed GFRP rebars. A total of three real size bridge deck specimens were made and tested. Main variables are the type of reinforcing bar and reinforcement ratio. Static test was performed with the load of DB-24 level until failure. Test results were compared and analyzed with ultimate load, deflection behavior, crack pattern and width.

Improvement and Behavior Analysis of Track Structure for Urban Maglev System (도시형 자기부상철도 궤도구조 개선 및 거동분석)

  • The existing track structure for urban Maglev system is designed for the Maglev vehicles of HSST in Japan and UTM in Korea. The tracks hvaing cross beams for supporting rails are located on bridge girders and have several draw backs. Linimo in Nagoya, Japan, the first commercial urban Maglev line, has separated tracks from a bridge to overcome the previous track structure. However, the Linimo just put the existing track on bridge deck. This study suggests a improved track structure for urban Maglev system and compares the behavior of the new and existing track through static structural analyses. In the improved track, the power collector of a Maglew vehicle is installed parallel to the bridge deck surface, and, thus, the bottom width of the track structure is not limited by the vehicle's width. Therefore, the live load is distributed more effectively by the wide bottom of the track. Also, steel plates instead of steel cross beams are used to support rails, and, thus, the rail's deflection is improved.

  • To effectively use the cross section of concrete decks, analytical and experimental studies on prestressed steel-box-girder bridges were performed in this study. The method of applying prestress was determined in the analytical study and the longitudinal behavior of the prestressed steel-box-girder bridge was considered in the experimental study. The object model for these studies was a two-span continuous bridge. The method of applying prestress determined herein was divided into two parts: one is that apply prestress to the concrete deck at its intermediate support, and the other is that apply prestress to the lower flange of the steel-box-girder bridge at its end support. The prototype bridge for the experiment was simulated based on the rule of similitude and was fabricated according to construction steps to apply prestress effectively. From the results of the experimental study, it has demonstrated that the prestressed steel-box-girder bridge provides better performance than the general steel-box-girder bridge in view of the increase of the design live load, the reduction of the tensile stress of the concrete deck at intermediate support, and the reduction of the displacement.

Modal parametric changes in a steel bridge with retrofitting

  • This paper presents the status improvement of an old damaged deck type rural road steel truss bridge through the modal parametric study after partial retrofitting. The dynamic and static tests on bridge were carried out as in damaged state and after partial retrofitting. The dynamic testing on the steel bridge was carried out using accelerometers under similar environmental conditions with same speed of the moving vehicle. The comparison of the modal parameters i.e., frequency, mode shape mode shape curvature, modal strain energy, along with the deflection parameter are studied with respect to structural analytical model parameters. The status up gradation for the upper and downstream truss obtained was different due to differential level of damage in the bridge. Also after retrofitting the structural elemental behavior obtained was not same as desired. The damage level obtained through static tests carried out using total station indicated further retrofitting requirement.
