Aerodynamic performance evaluation of different cable-stayed bridges with composite decks

  • The aerodynamic performance of long-span cable-stayed bridges is much dependent on its geometrical configuration and countermeasure strategies. In present study, the aerodynamic performance of three composite cable-stayed bridges with different tower configurations and passive aerodynamic countermeasure strategies is systematically investigated by conducting a series of wind tunnel tests in conjunction with theoretical analysis. The structural characteristics of three composite bridges were firstly introduced, and then their stationary aerodynamic performance and wind-vibration performance (i.e., flutter performance, VIV performance and buffeting responses) were analyzed, respectively. The results show that the bridge with three symmetric towers (i.e., Bridge I) has the lowest natural frequencies among the three bridges, while the bridge with two symmetric towers (i.e., Bridge II) has the highest natural frequencies. Furthermore, the Bridge II has better stationary aerodynamic performance compared to two other bridges due to its relatively large drag force and lift moment coefficients, and the improvement in stationary aerodynamic performance resulting from the application of different countermeasures is limited. In contrast, it demonstrates that the application of both downward vertical central stabilizers (UDVCS) and horizontal guide plates (HGP) could potentially significantly improve the flutter and vortex-induced vibration (VIV) performance of the bridge with two asymmetric towers (i.e., Bridge III), while the combination of vertical interquartile stabilizers (VIS) and airflow-depressing boards (ADB) has the capacity of improving the VIV performance of Bridge II.

Ultrasonic guided wave approach incorporating SAFE for detecting wire breakage in bridge cable

  • Ultrasonic guided waves have attracted increasing attention for non-destructive testing (NDT) and structural health monitoring (SHM) of bridge cables. They offer advantages like single measurement, wide coverage of acoustical field, and long-range propagation capability. To design defect detection systems, it is essential to understand how guided waves propagate in cables and how to select the optimal excitation frequency and mode. However, certain cable characteristics such as multiple wires, anchorage, and polyethylene (PE) sheath increase the complexity in analyzing the guided wave propagation. In this study, guided wave modes for multi-wire bridge cables are identified by using a semi-analytical finite element (SAFE) technique to obtain relevant dispersion curves. Numerical results indicated that the number of guided wave modes increases, the length of the flat region with a low frequency of L(0,1) mode becomes shorter, and the cutoff frequency for high order longitudinal wave modes becomes lower, as the number of steel wires in a cable increases. These findings were used in design of transducers for defect detection and selection of the optimal wave mode and frequency for subsequent experiments. A magnetostrictive transducer system was used to excite and detect the guided waves. The applicability of the proposed approach for detecting and locating wire breakages was demonstrated for a cable with 37 wires. The present ultrasonic guided wave method has been found to be very responsive to the number of brokenwires and is thus capable of detecting defects with varying sizes.

유체-구조 연성해석 기반 해저케이블 위해인자의 수중낙하 특성 비교 (Comparison of Underwater Drop Characteristics for Hazard Apparatuses on Subsea Cable Using Fluid-Structure Interaction Analysis)

  • It is known that damages to the subsea cables used for electric power transmission between islands and countries, including renewable energy from offshore wind power, current, tides, etc., cost much to restore, which causes social and economic losses. Various types of fishing rigs and anchors have been reported to be the greatest hazards to subsea cables. It is possible to design and construct a suitable protection facility for a subsea cable by precisely estimating the underwater behavior of such hazardous apparatuses. In this study, numerical simulations of the underwater behaviors of various hazardous apparatuses were carried out using fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis as a basic study to simulate the actual behavior phenomena of hazardous apparatuses in relation to a subsea cable. In addition, the underwater drop characteristics according to the types of hazardous apparatuses were compared. In order to verify the accuracy of the FSI analysis method used in this study, we compared the test results for underwater drops of a steel ball bearing. Stock anchors, stockless anchors, and rocket piles, which were actually reported to be the cases of damage to subsea cables along the southwest coast of Korea, were considered as the hazardous apparatuses for the numerical simulations. Each hazardous apparatus was generated by a Lagrangian model and coupled with the fluid domain idealized by the Eulerian equation to construct the three-dimensional FSI analysis model. The accuracy of the numerical simulation results was verified by comparing them with the analytical solutions, and the underwater drop characteristics according to the types of hazard apparatuses were compared.

강사장교 주요부재의 내하율 산정 (Evaluation of Rating Factor for Main Components in Steel Cable-Stayed Bridges)

  • 본 논문에서는 사장교 주요부재인 거더와 주탑 및 케이블의 내하율을 평가하기 위한 식을 제안하였다. 응력 및 안정성 검토식을 이용하여 강사장교 거더와 주탑에 적용 가능한 내하율 산정식을 제안하였고 케이블의 내하율 산정식을 제안하였다. 영향선해석을 수행하여 사장교 각 부재에 인장력 최대, 압축력 최대 및 정/부 모멘트 최대의 경우에 활하중 재하 형태를 결정하였고 각 부재의 내하율 산정절차를 정리하였다. 제안된 내하율 산정방법의 타당성을 검증하기 위하여 실교량 모델인 돌산대교에 대한 적용예를 제시하였다. 일반교량의 내하율 산정방법은 돌산대교 거더와 주탑의 내하율을 과대 평가 하였으며, 제안된 내하율 산정방법은 축력과 모멘트를 동시에 지지하는 사장교 거더와 주탑의 거동을 적절히 반영하였다.

신뢰도 기반 활하중모델에 의한 강합성 사장교의 충격계수 평가 (Evaluation of Impact Factor in Composite Cable-Stayed Bridges under Reliability-based Live Load Model)

  • AASHTO LRFD 및 도로교한계상태설계기준에서는 신뢰도 기반 활하중 모델로부터 결정된 트럭하중과 차로하중을 동시에 재하하도록 하고 있으며, 트럭하중은 충격계수를 고려하되 차로하중은 충격계수를 적용하지 않도록 규정하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 중앙경간 230m, 400m 및 540m의 멀티케이블 강합성 사장교를 대상으로 트럭하중과 차로하중이 동시에 주행하는 경우에 대해 차량-교량 상호작용 해석을 수행하고 케이블과 보강거더의 충격계수를 평가하였다. 트럭하중은 6-자유도의 차량 모델을 사용하였으며, 차로하중은 일련의 1축 차량이 연행해서 주행하는 것으로 모사하였다. 교량의 감쇠비가 충격계수에 미치는 영향을 평가하였으며, 충격에 영향을 미치는 주요 인자인 노면조도와 주행속도를 해석변수로 고려하였다. 노면조도는 ISO 8608 규정에 근거하여 랜덤 생성하였으며, 차량-교량 상호작용해석 시 노면조도는 트럭하중에만 적용하였다. 한편, 사장교의 충격계수 평가를 위해 실무에서 사용되고 있는 영향선 기법에 의한 충격계수를 동적 상호작용 해석에 의한 결과와 비교하였다.

다경간 현수교 주탑 설계를 위한 등가 현수교 모델 (Equivalent Suspension Bridge Model for Tower Design of Multi-span Suspension Bridges)

  • 다경간 현수교란 3개 이상의 주탑을 가지는 현수교로 중앙부에 주 경간을 2개 이상 가지는 현수교이다. 다경간 현수교 설계시 중앙주탑과 측주탑의 적절한 강성비를 가지도록 설계하는 것이 경제성이나 구조적인 효율성 측면에서 중요하다. 본 연구는 다경간 현수교의 중앙주탑과 측주탑의 적절한 강성비를 찾기 위해 다경간 현수교의 거동을 용이하게 파악할 수 있는 간편한 방법을 제안하는 것을 목적으로 하고 있다. 그 방법으로 다경간 현수교의 주케이블을 등가의 케이블 스프링으로 이상화하고, 주케이블에 작용하는 장력을 주탑상단에 수평력과 수직력의 외력으로 치환시키는 방법으로 다경간 현수교를 등가 다경간 현수교 모델로 치환하였다. 등가 다경간 현수교 모델에 대한 평형방정식을 유도하고 비선형해석을 통해 방정식의 해를 구하였다. 중앙지간장 3,000m의 4경간 현수교의 FEM 해석을 통해 각 주탑에서 발생하는 변위와 모멘트 반력을 계산하고, 이 결과를 등가 4경간 현수교 모델의 해석결과와 비교하여 본 연구의 연구결과를 검증하였다. 검증 결과, 본 연구의 제안방법은 FEM 해석결과와 비슷한 경향을 나타내었다.

  • This study was conducted to secure the structural safety and to build fundamental data for development of controlled environment facilities in ginseng cultivation. Shading structures of ginseng cultivation were classified with materials, structural forms, and detailed setups. They are wood or steel pipe, single or multi span, and frame or cable type. For structures having representative forms and dimensions, modeling for structural analysis was builded by SAP2000. And there was almost no farm carrying out the environmental management specially.

Behavior of a steel bridge with large caisson foundations under earthquake and tsunami actions

  • The main focus of this study is to numerically investigate the influence of strong earthquake and tsunami-induced wave impact on the response and behavior of a cable-stayed steel bridge with large caisson foundations, by assuming that the earthquake and the tsunami come from the same fault motion. For this purpose, a series of numerical simulations were carried out. First of all, the tsunami-induced flow speed, direction and tsunami height were determined by conducting a two-dimensional (2D) tsunami propagation analysis in a large area, and then these parameters obtained from tsunami propagation analysis were employed in a detailed three-dimensional (3D) fluid analysis to obtain tsunami-induced wave impact force. Furthermore, a fiber model, which is commonly used in the seismic analysis of steel bridge structures, was adopted considering material and geometric nonlinearity. The residual stresses induced by the earthquake were applied into the numerical model during the following finite element analysis as the initial stress state, in which the acquired tsunami forces were input to a whole bridge system. Based on the analytical results, it can be seen that the foundation sliding was not observed although the caisson foundation came floating slightly, and the damage arising during the earthquake did not expand when the tsunami-induced wave impact is applied to the steel bridge. It is concluded that the influence of tsunami-induced wave force is relatively small for such steel bridge with large caisson foundations. Besides, a numerical procedure is proposed for quantitatively estimating the accumulative damage induced by the earthquake and the tsunami in the whole bridge system with large caisson foundations.

  • Recently, the power system has a trend of a sustaining growth in electric power demand with large-sized formation. In this situation, current states can be definitely comprehended to operate security and economic power system. Also, corrective actions must be performed for the violation of bus voltage and line overload. In the security and economy with on-line, It is desirable that the situations of violation are promptly removed to operate power system effectively. This paper deals with the development of application, Kangyang Steel Works' Power System Guidance System, for voltage and overload correction on base case using Generator-Voltage Sensitivity List(GVSL) and Generator Shifter Factor List(GSFL). Also, to show the superiority and economical efficiency of the proposed application, we simulate the Kangyang Steel Works' Power System.

  • 본 연구에서는 대형교량의 전산화 모니터링 및 분석평가(Monitoring and Assessment: M&A)를 위한 시스템모형과 소프트웨어의 개발에 대한 새로운 접근방법과 개념을 제안하였다. 제안된 시스템모형은 대형교량의 M&A를 위한 최적의 방법을 반영한 모형이다. 이를 위하여 교량의 확률적 분석평가를 위한 신뢰성 모형이 개발되었고, 일련의 현장재하시험으로부터 계측된 실응답에 기초한 교량의 안전성과 신뢰성의 평가를 위해 신뢰성에 기초한 내하력 평가방법을 확립하였다. 또한 제안된 모델에 기초하여 대형교량의 전산화 M&A를 위한 시범소프트웨어(prototype software)를 개발하여 실제 사장교에 적용하였다. 본 연구에서 개발된 시스템모형 및 시범소프트웨어는 향후 사장교나 현수교와 같은 장대교량의 전산화 유지관리 시스템의 개발에 활용될 수 있다.
