Steam reforming reaction of natural gas is an important process for fuelcell commercialization. In this paper, steam reforming reaction is studied by numerical method. Pseudo-homogeneous model is incorporated for chemical reactions and one medium approach is used to take into account thermally equilibrium phenomena between catalyst and bulk gas. The model is validated with our experimental results under the same operating conditions. Because performance of reformer has relation to heat flux from wall, heat flux profiles was investigated by using Nusselt number. Value of Nusselt number in steam reformer is larger than one in channel, which does not have chemical reaction because steam reforming reaction is an endothermic reaction. When the difference of Nusselt number at the front and the rear is larger, performance is improved.
Hydrogen production via steam reforming of bio-oil from algal biomass over fast pyrolysis with commercial catalysts was carried out. Aqueous bio-oil obtained by phase separation from a crude oil over fast pyrolysis was used as a reactant and comparison studies for activity over different catalysts (FCR-4-02, POS-7, Cat. A, RUA), reaction temperature, and steam/carbon (S/C) ratios were performed. Experimental results showed that different catalytic activities were observed with different S/C ratios and catalyst composition and the highest hydrogen yield of 70% was obtained with a POS-7 catalyst at a S/C ratio of 10 and 1073 K.
Methanol steam reforming (MSR) is a promising method for hydrogen supplying as a critical step in hydrogen fuel cell commercialization in mobile applications. Modelling and understanding of the reactor behavior is an attractive research field to develop an efficient reformer. Three-layer feed-forward artificial neural network (ANN) and Box-Behnken design (BBD) were used to modelling of MSR process using the Cu-SiO2 aerogel catalyst. Furthermore, impacts of the basic operational variables and their mutual interactions were studied. The results showed that the most affecting parameters were the reaction temperature (56%) and its quadratic term (20.5%). In addition, it was also found that the interaction between temperature and Steam/Methanol ratio is important on the MSR performance. These models precisely predict MSR performance and have great agreement with experimental results. However, on the basis of statistical criteria the ANN technique showed the greater modelling ability as compared with statistical BBD approach.
This study proposes kinetic parameters of Ru catalyst for steam methane reforming (SMR). First, extensive experiments are performed under different SMR conditions to evaluate performance of the catalyst in SMR. Second, a kinetic model is designed and developed for parameter estimation and validation using gPROMS. Finally, estimated parameters are fitted to the kinetic model and then, the model results are compared with the experimental data. The model results are in a good agreement with the experimental data.

The experimental performance evaluation of a cylindrical steam reformer with various thermal conditions has been conducted. The bottom space of the cylindrical reactor was packed with Ruthenium (Ru) catalyst. A three-segment furnace was installed to create the axially variable boundary temperature distribution. Six K-type thermocouples were inserted into the catalyst layer, and three exhaust ports were fabricated on the side wall along the flow direction. The exhausted gases at each port were analyzed by using gas chromatograph (GC) system. The experimental results showed that the reforming reaction occurs intensively in the upstream region and more hydrogen is obtained when the intake gas is sufficiently heated up through the enhanced steam reforming (SR) reaction. The axially increasing boundary temperature setup provided the maximally accumulated reforming efficiency of 74.8%, when the reactor was placed at the 3rd section of the furnace.
The $SnO_2$ with a particle size of about 300 nm instead of Ni is used in this study to overcome rapid catalytic deactivation by the formation of a $NiAl_2O_4$ spinal structure on the conventional Ni/${\gamma}$-$Al_2O_3$ catalyst and simultaneously impregnated the catalyst with potassium (K). The $SnO_2-K_2O$ impregnated Zeolite Y catalyst ($SnO_2-K_2O$/ZY) exhibited significantly higher ethanol reforming reactivity that that achieved with $SnO_2$ 100 and $SnO_2$ 30 wt %/ZY catalysts. The main products from ethanol steam reforming (ESR) over the $SnO_2$-$K_2O$/ZY catalyst were $H_2$, $CO_2$, and $CH_4$, with no evidence of any CO molecule formation. The $H_2$ production and ethanol conversion were maximized at 89% and 100%, respectively, over $SnO_2$ 30 wt %-$K_2O$ 3.0 wt %/ZY at 600 $^{\circ}C$ for 1 h at a $CH_3CH_2OH:H_2O$ ratio of 1:1 and a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 12,700 $h^{-1}$. No catalytic deactivation occurred for up to 73 h. This result is attributable to the easier and weaker of reduction of Sn components and acidities over $SnO_2-K_2O$/ZY catalyst, respectively, than those of Ni/${\gamma}$-$Al_2O_3$ catalysts.
The catalytic steam reforming of woody biomass tar and soot to convert a synthetic gas containing hydrogen was investigated by using a bench-scale biomass gasification system. One commercial nickel-based catalyst, Katalco 46-6Q, and two different kinds of natural minerals, dolomite and olivine, were tested as a reforming catalyst at various reforming temperatures. The reaction characteristics of woody biomass tar were also investigated by TGA at a variety of heating rates. With all three catalysts conversion efficiency of tar and soot increased at increasing temperature. The reforming of tar and soot in the synthetic gas induce the increase of combustible gases such as $H_2$, CO and $CH_4$ in the product gas. The nickel-based catalyst showed a higher tar and soot conversion efficiency than mineral catalysts under the same temperature conditions.

Most of the reformer experiments have been conducted only in high-temperature operation conditions above 700℃. However, to design high efficiency solid oxide fuel cell, it is necessary to test actual reaction performance in mid-temperature (550℃) operation areas. In order to study the operation characteristics and performance of commercial reforming catalysts, a reforming performance experiment was conducted on mid-temperature. The catalysts used in this study are Ni-based FCR-4 and Ru-based RuA, RuAL. Experiments were conducted with a Steam-to-carbon ratio of 2.0 to 3.0 under gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) 2,000 to 5,000 hr-1. As a result, RuA and RuAL catalysts showed similar gas composition to the equilibrium regardless of the reforming temperature. However, the FCR-4 catalyst showed a lower hydrogen yield compared to the equilibrium under high GHSV conditions.
The use of biogas as an energy source reduces the chance of possible emission of two greenhouse gases, $CH_4$ and $CO_2$, into the atmosphere at the same time. Its nature of being a reproducible energy source makes its use even more attractive. This research if for the hydrogen production through the steam reforming of the biogas. The biogas utilized 3D-IR matrix burner in which the surface combustion is applied. The nickel catalyst was used inside a reformer. Parametric screening studies were achieved as Steam/Carbon ratio, biogas component ratio, Space velocity and Reformer temperature. When the condition of Steam/Carbon ratio, $CH_4/CO_2$ ratio, Space velocity and Refomer temperature were 3.25, 60%:40%, 19.32L/$g{\cdot}hr$ and $700^{\circ}C$ respectively, the hydrogen concentration and methane conversion rate were showed maximum values. Under the condition mentioned above, $H_2$ concentration was 73.9% and methane conversion rate was 98.9%.
In this paper, heat and mass transfer characteristics through experimental and numerical study are extensively investigated in steam reforming reactor under given operating conditions. In order to get simulated data at outlet of the reformer, heterogeneous reactor model is incorporated. As the reaction also takes place in porous media, two medium approach is used to take into account thermally non-equilibrium phenomena between catalyst and bulk gas. From various parametric studies, significance of heat transfer is emphasized in steam reforming reaction.
