Boiler high-temperature pipelines such as main steam pipe, header and steam drum in fossil power plants are degraded by creep damage due to severe operationg conditions like high temperature and high pressure for an extended period time. Such material degradation lead to various component faliures causing serious accidents at the plant. Conventional measurement techniques such as replica method, electric resistance method, and hardness test method have such disadvantages as complex preparation and measurement procedures, too many control parameters, and therefore, low practicality and they were applied only to component surfaces with good accessibility. In this study, both artificial creep degradation test using life prediction formula and frequency analysis by ultrasonic tests for their preparing creep degraded specimens have been carried out for the purpose of nondestructive evaluation for creep damage which can occur in high-temperature pipelline of fossil power plant. As a result of ultrasonic tests for crept specimens, we confirmed that the high frequency side spectra decrease and central frequency components shift to low frequency bans, and bandwiths decrease as increasing creep damage in backwall echoes.

In this paper, artificial creep degradation test and ultrasonic measurement for their creep degraded specimens have been carried out for the purpose of evaluation for creep damage which can occur in high-temperature pipeline of fossil power plant. Absolute measuring method of quantitative ultrasonic measurement for material degradation was established, and long term creep degradationtests using life prediction formula were carried out. As a result of ultrasonic tests for crept specimens, we confirmed that the sound velocity decreased and the attenuation coefficient linearly increased in proportion to the increase of creep fractiin(${\phi}$c).
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to resolve the Naval ship's Local Operation Panel(LOP) malfunction problems which caused by overheating in summer season and dispatching to equatorial regions. Methods: Instead of using dual type heat insulation materials(consist with ceramic wool and glass wool), aerogel heat insulation materials were used for decreasing heat emissions from gas-turbine heat waste steam pipes passing water-jet- room. Experiment and Computational analysis of heat flow were conducted to analyze the internal room temperature changes. Results: The results of this study are as follows; The aerogel heat insulation materials suppress heat emission more efficiently than dual type insulation materials. The cold surface temperature of insulation was far more decreased and internal room, LOP surface temperature also showed significant results too. Conclusion: The substituted heat insulation materials appeared remarkable performance in decreasing room temperature that it could be used for suppressing the LOP overheatings and malfunctions.
Power conversion cycles (Subcritical Steam, Supercritical Steam, Open Air Brayton, Recuperated Air Brayton, Combined Cycle, Closed Brayton Supercritical CO2 (sCO2), and Stirling) are evaluated for land-based nuclear microreactors based on technical maturity, system efficiency, size, cost and maintainability, safety implications, and siting considerations. Based upon these criteria, Air Brayton systems were selected for further evaluation. A brief history of the development and applications of Brayton power systems is given, followed by a description of how these thermal-to-electrical energy conversion systems might be integrated with a nuclear microreactor. Modeling is performed for optimized cycles operating at 3 MW(e) with turbine inlet temperatures of 500 ℃, 650 ℃ and 850 ℃, corresponding to: a) sodium fast, b) molten salt or heat pipe, and c) helium or sodium thermal reactors, coupled with three types of Brayton power conversion units (PCUs): 1) simple open-cycle gas turbine, 2) recuperated open-cycle gas turbine, and 3) recuperated and intercooled open-cycle gas turbine. Aeroderivative turboshaft engines employing the simple Brayton cycle and two industrial gas turbine engines employing recuperated air Brayton cycles are also analyzed. These engines offer mature technology that can facilitate near-term deployment with a modest improvement in efficiency.
Resonance phenomena occurs at large vertical pump which is operating to cool down the hot steam using sea water in the power plant. To avoid the resonance, the natural frequency needs to be isolated about 20% from motor operating speed. Yet, excessive vibration occurs especially at low tide. At first, natural frequency of the whole pump system and each part is calculated using ANSYS. As it is revealed in the previous journal papers that only circular pipe part is related to resonance, the FSI technique is applied for free vibration analysis. The natural frequency is reduced to 60% (compared to that) of the frequency measured in air as it is similar to other published results. And the frequency obtained by finite element analysis is almost same to that obtained from modal test. Based on the accurate finite element model and analysis, design change is tried to avoid the resonance by changing the thickness of pipe and base supporting plate. In stead of doing optimization process, design sensitivity is computed and used to find such designs to avoid resonance.
The pipelines are apt to erosion or corrosion because of the high-speed flow of water and steam with high temperatures or high pressures. This study was carried out a finite element analysis (FEA) and an experimental for the fracture behavior of T-joint pipes with local wall thinning under internal pressure. Local wall thinning was machined on the pipes in order to simulate erosion and corrosion of the metal. The configurations of the eroded area included an eroded ratio of d/t=0.80~0.963 and an eroded length of l=25 mm, 50 mm, and 102 mm. Three-dimensional elastic-plastic analyses were also carried out using FEA, which accurately simulates failure behaviors. In regards to the relationship between pressure and eroded, the criterion that indicates what can be used safely under operating pressure and design pressure were obtained from FEA. The FEA results were in relatively good agreement with that of the experiment.
This study was considered to occur the local wall thinning at elbow which is flowing the steam and high-pressure water of high-temperature. The angle of elbow is ${\Theta}=45^{\circ}$ and $67.545^{\circ}$. The damage behaviors of inner or outer wall thinning elbow under internal pressure were calculated by FEA(finite element analysis). We compared the simulated results by FEA with experimental data. The FEA results are as follows: In the FEA results of three types of wall thinning ratio, the circumferential and longitudinal stresses show the similar values regardless of the angle of elbow, respectively. The circumferential strain was greater at elbow of small angle, but the longitudinal strain was nearly same. The FEM stress of outer wall thinning elbow was slightly higher than that of the inner wall thinning elbow, and strain was also slightly higher. In the experiments, the circumferential strain was increased with the increase in the internal pressure, and increased rapidly on about 0.2% of strain. The longitudinal strain was small. The strain at break was much smaller than 0.2%. In the relation between pressure and eroded ratio, the criteria that can be used safely under operating pressure and design pressure were obtained. The results of FEA were in relatively good agreement with those of the experiment.
Most of steam power plants in Korea are using the method of heating the feed water whenever the ambient temperature around the power plant area below $5^{\circ}C$ to prevent freezing water flowing in the pipe in winter time. But this kind of heat supplying system is not useful to save energy. If we take the method that the temperature of the each pipe is controled by direct measure of temperature by attaching sensor on the outside surface of the feed water tubes, then we can expect that a plenty of energy can be saved. In this study, the computer simulation is used to compare the energy consumption loads of both systems. Energy saving rate is calculated for the location of Incheon area in winter season. Four convection heat transfer coefficients for the ambient air and three initial flowing water temperature inside the tube were used. The result shows that the temperature control system using sensor represents more than 95% of energy saving rate in Incheon area. Even in the severe January weather condition, the energy saving rate is almost 75% in two days basis and even 83% in one day basis.
When pile foundation is constructed by dynamic method, it is desirable to perform monitoring of drivability with pile penetration. Dynamic pile monitoring yields information regarding driving hammer, cushion, pile and soil behaviour that can be used to confirm the assumptions of wave equation analysis. In this study, dynamic monitoring of the steel pipe pile was performed with Pile Driving Analyser (PDA). The PDA utilizes the wave propagation theory to compute numerous variables which describe the conditions of the hammer-pile-soil system in real-time and following each hammer impact. This approach allows immediate field verification of hammer performance, driving efficiency, and estimation of pile bearing capacity. A series of PDA test were performed at the Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS) located in southeast of Marado, a southernmost small island south of Jeju Island. The drilling core sediments of Ieodo subsoil are composed of mud and sand, showing lamination and wavy or lenticular bedding, which were often bioturbated. This paper summarizes the results of PDA tests which were applied in measurement and estimation of large diameter open ended steel pipe pile driven by steam hammer, Vulcan-560 and MRBS-4600, at the marine sediments.
The thermal stratification phenomena, frequently occurring in the component of nuclear power plant system such as pressurizer surge line, steam generator inlet nozzle, safety injection system (SIS), and chemical and volume control system (CVCS), can cause through-wall cracks, thermal fatigue, unexpected piping displacement and dislocation, and pipe support damage. The phenomenon is one of the unaccounted load in the design stage. However, the load have been found to be serious as nuclear power plant operation experience accumulates. In particular, the thermal stratification by the turbulent penetration or valve leak in the SIS and SCS pipe line can lead these safety systems to failure by the thermal fatigue. Therefore in this study an 1/10 scaledowned experimental rig had been designed and installed. And a series of experimental works had been executed to measure the temperature distribution (thermal stratification) in these systems by the turbulent penetration, valve leak, and heat transfer through valve. The results provide very valuable informations such as turbulent penetration depth, the possibility of thermal stratification by the heat transfer through valve, etc. Also the results are expected to be useful to understand the thermal stratification in these systems, establish the thermal stratification criteria and validate the calculation results by CFD Codes such as Fluent, Phenix, CFX.
