In this study, it achieved life cycle assessment to estimate environmental performance for naphtha steam reforming that account for the production over 50% of total hydrogen output. Although hydrogen dosen't emit air emissions, especially, $CO_2$, a large of $CO_2$ is emitted in hydrogen production process. In the result of this study, it ascertained the truth that $CO_2$ is emitted at the rate of $6.3kg/kgH_2$ and that result from steam reforming reaction and use of fossil fuel in hydrogen manufacturing process. Above all, 57% of total $CO_2$ emissions is emitted in process of steam reforming of naphtha and so it knew that the principle of steam reforming is key issue in aspect to environment. Also, it compared hydrogen by fuel of fuel cell vehicle with gasoline fuel of general gasoline vehicle to analyze relative environment of hydrogen for fossil fuel during the life cycle. As the result, it might be difficult in improvement of environment because $CO_2$ emissions during the hydrogen manufacturing process is nearly the same with that during the use of gasoline.
Biogas, composed mainly of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), is a renewable gas that can serve as an alternative energy source. In this study, we developed a new microwave reformer and analyzed its reforming characteristics. We observed that higher temperatures of the microwave receptor led to increased reforming efficiency. By supplying appropriate amounts of methane and steam, we could prevent carbon generated from the thermal decomposition reaction of carbon dioxide from depositing on the catalytic active layer, thus avoiding the inhibition of catalytic activity. Hydrogen generation was enhanced when maintaining the biogas ratio and steam supply at adequate levels. Increasing the SiC ratio in the receptor improved the uniformity of temperature distribution and growth rate, resulting in higher conversion rates of the reforming process.
This paper focuses on a systematic configuration of steam reforming fuel processor, particularly designed for small and medium sized hydrogen production application. In a typical integration of the fuel processor, there exist significant temperature gradients over the entire system which has negative effect on both catalyst life-time and system performance. Also, the volumetric inefficiency should be avoided to obtain the possible compactness for the commercial purpose. In the present work, the computational analysis will be performed to gain the fundamental insight on the transport phenomena and chemical reactions in the reformer consisting of preheating, steam reforming (SR), and water gas shift (WGS) reaction beds in the flow direction. Also, the fuel processing system includes a top-fired burner providing necessary thermal energy for endothermic catalytic reactor. A fully two-dimensional numerical modeling for a integrated fuel processing system is introduced for in-depth analysis of the heat and mass transport phenomena based on surface kinetics and catalytic process. In the model, water gas shift reaction and decomposition reaction were assumed to be at equilibrium. A kinetic model was developed and then computational results were compared with the experimental data available in the literature. Finally, the case study was done by considering the key parameters, i.e. steam to carbon (S/C) ratio and temperature. The computer-aided models developed in this study can be greatly utilized for the design of advanced fast-paced compact fuel processors research.
LFG (Land-Fill Gas) includes components of $CH_4$, $CO_2$, $O_2$, $N_2$, and water. The preparation of synthesis gas from LFG as a DME (Dimethyl Ether) feedstock was studied by methane reforming of $CO_2$, $O_2$ and steam over $NiO-MgO-CeO_2/Al_2O_3$ catalyst. Our experiments were performed to investigate the effects of methane conversion and syngas yield on the amount of LFG components over $NiO-MgO-CeO_2/Al_2O_3$ catalyst. Results were obtained through the methan reforming experiments at the temperature of $900^{\circ}C$ and GHSV of 8,800. The results were as following; it has generally shown that syngas yield increase with the increase of oxygen and steam amounts and then decrease. Highly methane conversion of above 98% and syngas yield of approximately 60% were obtained in the feed of gas composition flow-rate of 243ml/min of $CH_4$, 241ml/min of $CO_2$, 195ml/min of $O_2$, 48ml/min of $N_2$, and 450ml/min of steam, respectively, under reactor pressure of 1 bar for 200 hrs of reaction time. Also, it was shown that catalyst deactivation by coke formation was reduced by excessively adding oxygen and steam as an oxidizer of the methane reforming.
The Plate reformer consisting of combustion chamber and reforming chamber for 25 kW MCFC stack has been operated and computational fluid dynamics was applied to estimate reactions and thermal fluid behavior in the reformer. The methane air 2-stage reaction was assumed in the combustion chamber, and three step steam reforming reactions were included in the calculation. Flow uniformity, reaction rate and species distribution, and temperature distribution were analyzed. In particular, temperature distribution was compared with the measurements to show good agreement in the combustion chamber, however, inappropriate agreement in the reformer chamber
Nickel fiber mat was investigated as a potential structured catalyst for steam reforming of biogas in the temperature range of $600-700^{\circ}C$. The activity of as-received catalyst was very low owing to the smooth surface of fibers. Pretreatment of the catalyst by oxidation followed by reduction under methane partial oxidation condition significantly improved the catalytic activity, although degradation of the activity was found during the reaction due to oxidation and sintering. This deactivation was retarded by supplying additional hydrogen in the inlet gases or by coating $CeO_2$ over the catalyst surfaces.
To remove tar and produce environment-friendly $H_2$, one of the promising routes is the sorption-enhanced steam reforming (SESR) process, in which the $CO_2$ sorbent is a key element. We prepared the $CO_2$ sorbents with $Ca_{12}Al_{14}O_{33}$ as carrier with various methods. Their characterizations were examined, and the sample prepared by solgel (SG) method showed the strongest CaO and $Ca_{12}Al_{14}O_{33}$ phases and the most excellent pore structure among all the samples. Then, a thermogravimetric experiment was conducted, and the results showed that the sample prepared by sol-gel (SG) method had the best $CO_2$ adsorption capacity and excellent long-term cyclic stability. Finally, the sorbent was used into the steam reforming experiments of tar. Under the action of the sorbent, the reforming reaction was enhanced in-situ, with the $H_2$ yield and concentration improved obviously, and especially, $H_2$ concentration can reach over 98.85%.
This work is for the design study of natural gas reformer (40 $m^3/hr$ over). We used experimental kinetic data from literature. After that, we set up theoretical model based on experimental reaction kinetic data. The shape of reactor is 1.7 m long and 200 mm dia. with cylinder geometry. Volume of reactor is 53.4 liter. Average flow velocity of gases in the reactor has been determined 0.272 m/sec and residence time is 9.26 sec. Reaction temperature is $850^{\circ}C$, with pressure 9.3 Bar. Used natural gas volume is about 9.21 $m^3/hr$. Produced hydrogen is 43.7 $m^3/hr$ with no change of pressure. Unreacted natural gas is 0.09 $m^3/hr$ and the amount of steam is 26.9 $m^3/hr$. Steam to $CH_4$ (s/c ratio) is 2.91. Reforming reaction take place from the reactor entrance to 120 cm region of cylinder type reactor. After the entrance of reacting gases to 120 cm region, the reaction reaches equilibrium which is close to products. This study can be applicable to design various reactors. Output data is in good agreements with the data in literatures1).

The catalytic steam reforming of toluene, a major component of biomass tar, was studied using several catalysts at various temperatures $400-800^{\circ}C$, kind of metal, and metal loading content. Ru and K promoted Ni-base catalyst were prepared, and used for steam reforming of toluene with steam/toluene molar ratio of 25. Concentration of toluene in reactant flow is $30g/Nm^3$ that is usual content of tar from biomass gasifier. The result from experiments showed that $H_2$ content in product gas and toluene conversion increased with temperature. Where in high temperature range, CO and $CO_2$ content in product gas were affected mainly by Boudouard reaction. Ni/Ru-K(3wt%)/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst showed best performance on steam reforming of toluene than used catalysts in this study at whole temperature. Catalysts have been characterized by XRD, TG. XRD analysis displayed that Ni particle size on Ni/Ru-K (3wt%)/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst was 29.4nm. Activation energy of Ni/Ru-K (3wt%)/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst was calculated 36.8kJ/mol by Arrhenius plot.
