Some studies on direct-contact condensation in cocurrent stratified flow of steam and subcooled water were reviewed. Several approaches have been performed to develop the condensation heat transfer coefficient relationshipo. The local Nusselt number is correlated in terms of the local water Reynolds and Prandtl numbers as well as the steam Froude number. In addition, a turbulence-centered model, developed principally for gas absorption in several geometries, is modified by using calculated interfacial paramters for the turbulent velocity and length scales. These approaches result in a fairly good agreement with the data, whereas, the turbulence-centered model is here rexcommened since it is based on the turbulent properties which may be closely related to the condensation phenemena.
This paper presents an experimental investigation to visualize cross-sectional two-phase flow structure and identify liquid-gas interface for condensation of steam at a low mass flux in a slightly inclined tube using the axial-viewing technique, which permits to look directly into flow during condensation of steam. In this technique, two-phase flow is viewed along the axis of a pipe by locating a high-speed video camera in front of a viewer that is fitted at the outlet of the pipe. A short section of the pipe is illuminated and is recorded through the viewer, which is kept free of liquid by mildly introducing air. Experiments were conducted in a pipe of 19.05 mm in inner diameter at atmospheric pressure. Cross-sectional two-phase flow structure is obtained at a steam mass flux of $2.62kg/m^2s$ as a function of steam quality in the range from 0.5 to 0.9. The results show that stratified-wavy flow is a unique flow pattern observed in the scope of the present study. Condensate film thickness, stratification angle and void fraction were measured from the obtained flow structure images. Finally, heat transfer coefficient was calculated using the measurement data and discussed in comparison with existing correlations.
An experimental study on thermal mixing of steam jet condensation through the I-Sparger of APR1400 design using B&C (Blowdown and Condensation) test facility. Due to the limit of the steam supply capability of the pressurizer, transient thermal mixing experiments were conducted. Temperature distributions in the quench tank were measured using thermocouples located at various positions. From the experimental data, local temperature variations for various locations and vertically cross-sectional temperature distributions for several times were depicted and presented. The result shows the characteristics of thermal mixing of the I-Sparger depending on the design features of the I-Sparger.
In this study, the experimental investigation of air-cooled condensation in slightly inclined circular tubes with and without fins has been conducted. In order to assess the effects of the essential parameters, variable air velocities and steam mass flow rates were given to the test section. The heat transfer performance of air-cooled condensation were dominantly affected by the air velocity, however, the increase of the steam mass flow rate gave relatively weaker effects to total heat transfer capability. And in the experimental cases with the finned tube, the total heat transfer rate of the finned tube was significantly larger than that of the flat tube. From those results, it can be confirmed that the most important parameter for air-cooled condensation heat transfer is the convective heat transfer characteristics of air. Therefore, for the well-designed long-term cooling passive safety system, the consideration of the optimal design of the fin geometry is needed, and the experimental and numerical validations of the heat transfer capability of the finned tube would be required.

When the steam is used as working fluid in fluid machinery, different from other gases as air, phase transition (steam condensation) can occur and it affects not only the flow fields, but also machine performance & efficiency. Therefore, considering phase transition phenomena in CFD calculation is required to achieve accurate prediction of steam flow and non-equilibrium wet-steam model is needed to simulate realistic steam condensing flow. In this research, non-equilibrium wet-steam model is implemented on in-house code(T-Flow), the flow fields including phase transition phenomena in convergent-divergent nozzle are studied and compared to results of advance researches.
Phenomenon of direct contact condensation (DCC) heat transfer between steam and water is characterized by the transport of heat and mass through a moving steam/water interface. Since the DCC heat transfer provides some advantageous features in the viewpoint of enhanced heat transfer, it is widely applied to the diversified industries. This study proposes a simple condensation model on the stable steam jets discharging into a quenching tank with subcooled water from a single horizontal pipe for the prediction of the steam jet shapes. The model was derived from the mass, momentum and energy equations as well as thermal balance equation with condensing characteristics at the steam/water interface for the axi-symmetric coordinates. The extremely large heat transfer rate at the steam/water interface was reflected in the effective thermal conductivity estimated from the previous experimental results. The results were compared with the experimental ones. The predicted steam jet shape(i. e. radius and length) by the model was increasing as the steam mass flux and the pool temperature were increasing, which was similar to the trend observed in the experiment.

When analyzing containment thermal-hydraulics, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a powerful tool because multi-dimensional and local analysis is required for some accident scenarios. According to the previous study, neglecting steam bulk condensation in the CFD analysis leads to a significant error in boundary layer profiles. Validating the condensation model requires the experimental data near the condensing surface, however, available boundary layer data is quite limited. It is also important to confirm whether the heat and mass transfer analogy (HMTA) is still valid in the presence of bulk condensation. In this study, the boundary layer measurements on the vertical condensing surface in the presence of air were performed with the rectangular channel facility WINCS, which was designed to measure the velocity, temperature, and concentration boundary layers. We set the laminar flow condition and varied the Richardson number (1.0-23) and the steam volume fraction (0.35-0.57). The experimental results were used to validate CFD analysis and HMTA models. For the former, we implemented a bulk condensation model assuming local thermal equilibrium into the CFD code and confirmed its validity. For the latter, we validated the HMTA-based correlations, confirming that the mixed convection correlation reasonably predicted the sum of wall and bulk condensation rates.

Last several stages of high capacity fossil power steam turbine and most stages of nuclear power steam turbine operate on wet steam. As a consequence, the flows in those cascades are accompanied by condensation, and the latent heat caused by condensation affects an oblique shock wave being generated at the vicinity of trailing of the blade. In the case of expanding of moist air through a suction type indraft wind tunnel, the effect of condensation affection the oblique shock wave generated by placing the small wedge into the supersonic part of the nozzle was investigated experimentally. In these connections, the relationship between condensation zone and reflection point of the incident oblique shock wave, angle between wedge bottom wall and oblique shock wave, and the variations of angles of incident and reflected shock waves due to the variation of initial stagnation relative humidity are discussed. Furthermore, the relationship between initial stagnation relative humidity and load working on the nozzle wall, obtained by measuring static pressure at the nozzle centerline, is discussed.
In the present study, we investigated the velocity distribution, temperature distribution and condensation characteristics of steam jet issuing from four different orifice nozzles with a Reynolds number of approximately 79,000 using the phase Doppler particle analyzer system and a K-type thermocouple. The steam jet discharged from the orifice nozzle has a wider jet width compared to pipe nozzle because of the vena-contracta which can enhance the mixing of steam jet with the ambient air. Therefore, the orifice jet showed less condensation due to its wideness, resulting in small velocity decay rate and large temperature decay rate due to momentum conservation and decreased latent heat release compared to pipe nozzle, respectively. Also, the wider jet width of the orifice jet resulted in larger velocity and temperature spread rate compared to the pipe jet. In addition, the increase in the aspect ratio of the orifice jet led to more condensation and larger velocity spread rate and temperature spread rate due to both the vena-contracta and axis-switching effect, resulting in the increase of jet entrainment.
