  • Ship infrared signature is the cause of detection and tracking by infrared sensor and anti-ship missile seeker. Recent warships have been applied the infrared stealth technology to reduce own ship infrared signature and tested to validate own ship infrared signature level. This study describes the two issues. Firstly, we describe the infrared measurement concept and infrared signature level establishment method that have been performed. Secondly, we compare and analyze the error components between the infrared measurement and simulation result.

  • Recently fuel cell is considered to be a new technology that can substitute the ICE(Internal Combustion Engine) as well as overcome environmental issues. In military applications, fuel cell has an unique advantages, which are quietness, namely, stealth. The environmental requirement such as shock and vibration in military application, however, is very severe comparing to civilian demand. Especially, the safety concerning hydrogen storage is the most important problem. Among the candidate methods to store hydrogen, the metal hydride storage is promising method owing to the storage mechanism of chemical absorption of hydrogen to metal hydrides. In this study, the new composition of Ti-Zr type metal hydride(A composition) was suggested and investigated to increase the hydrogen storage capacity. For comparison, the hydrogen charge-discharge properties were investigated with the commercialized Ti-Zr type metal hydride(B composition) using PCT(Pressure-Composition-Temperature) measurement. Also two hydrogen storage cylinders were loaded with each metal hydride and their hydrogen charging and discharging characteristics were investigated. As a result, it was found that the new Ti-Zr type metal hydride has a slightly higher hydrogen storage capacity compared to commercial Ti-Zr type metal hydride.

  • It is essential to understand the infrared signature of a naval ship to survive against various missile attacks under variable environmental conditions. As guided missiles are developing to equip more accurate IR seekers, research works for countermeasure and IR stealth technology are strongly required. But challenging works are continuously suggested for predicting and analyzing IR signal status of naval ships to achieve low observable performance under various weather conditions, variable missions and developing threats. In this study, overall guidelines of setting design criteria for low observable ships are proposed by considering varying environmental conditions including daily and seasonal variations. Test and evaluation criteria for newly constructed ships for target and background temperature difference is proposed as a design criteria which can be predicted by change of condition and ship's speed. Through the proposed techniques and procedures, it is expected to establish the measurement and evaluation criteria by using temperature, IR Signal differences between the ship and the background.

  • Since 1990, Agency for Defense Development is operating the non-magnetic laboratory for the development of key technology for the underwater magnetic stealth part, the research of the magnetic application weapons and the technical support for Korean Navy. Recently, we installed the new three-axis earth magnetic field simulator and the measurement system in the non-magnetic laboratory which is replacing the existing outdated facility. In this paper, we deal with the detailed design result of the earth magnetic field simulator and the measurement system. Also, we describe the effective method to separate the permanent and the induced magnetic field from the measured data for a scaled model ship using the earth magnetic field simulator and the measurement system.

  • The RCS value of maritime ship is indicator of ship's stealth performance and it should be particularly measured for navy ship to ensure survivability on the battlefield. In the design phase of the navy ship, a RCS prediction should be performed to reduce RCS value and achieve ROC(Required Operational Capability) of the ship through configuration control. In operational phase, the RCS value of the ship should be measured for verifying the designed value and obtaining tactical data to take action against enemy missile. During the measurement of RCS for the ship, ship motion can be affected by roll and pitch in accordance with sea state, which should be analyzed into threat elevation from view point of enemy missile. In this paper, we propose a method to measure and analyze RCS of ship in 3-dimensions using a ship motion measuring instrument and a fixed RCS measurement system. In order to verify the proposed method, we conducted a marine experiment using a test ship in sea environment and compared the measurement data with RCS prediction value which is carried by prediction SW($CornerStone^{TM}$) using CAD model of the ship.

  • This paper introduces a bistatic ISAR imaging technique. In bistatic geometry, the transmitter and receiver are placed in different locations. The monostatic ISAR is inadequate not only for obtaining images on targets approaching along the radar's line of sight, but also for stealth targets. In this paper, geometry, signal modeling as well as bistatic Doppler for bistatic ISAR are introduced to address these problems. Simulations results show bistatic ISAR images as well as monostatic ISAR images against target's moving scenarios, and analyze their differences for each scenario.

  • The solid propellants have been most widely used for the military rockets or missiles all over the world and the efforts have been focused on the enhancement of propellant performance up to 1980s. lately in company with the distinguished development in the intelligence and communication technology, the more accurate guidance as well as maneuverability has been required in the military weapon system. To meet the requirements such as a high maneuverability, insensitiveness, or stealth of missile, the researches have been doing to develop the solid propellants which have a quality of ultra-fast burning rate, insensitiveness, low signature or the like.

  • Helicopter noise has been considered as one of major design factors like a performance and safety since the public acceptance, comfortability and stealth aspects were important for customers. According to the airworthiness regulation, the noise levels in throe different flight conditions shall comply with the specific limits. Main and tail rotors noise is most dominant in far field due to the low and mid range frequency characteristics. It is an air-born noise so That the accurate aerodynamic data is necessary for the accurate noise prediction. In KARI, low noise main and tail rotors as well as analysis codes have been developed since 2000. The approach for low noise main rotor is a kind of tip modifications, so called twin vortices tip to reduce the BVI noise. Analysis results show the 9.3dB reduction in terms of pseudo EPNL. The uneven spacing concept is applied for low noise tail rotor. Three or four decibel noise reduction is achieved by new optimized uneven spacing. Rotor noise and aerodynamic prediction codes have been improved also.

  • Multiple reflections on exterior equipment with complex shape on naval ships cause unexpectedly high Radar Cross Section (RCS) distributions, and the directions of reradiated electromagnetic waves are hard to predict. Therefore, the optimum arrangement of exterior equipments should be considered according to the Radar Absorbing Structure (RAS) method. In this paper, the optimum arrangement for exterior equipments was determined to reduce multiple reflections and RCS even with complex shapes. The sequential descending arrangement method was used to establish an optimum arrangement algorithm. An LCS-2 type model was selected for optimum exterior equipment arrangements. In order to reduce computational cost, RCS distributions and multiple reflection path analysis of exterior equipments was carried out to select exterior equipments for optimum arrangement, and an optimum arrangement was determined to find positions with minimum RCS values. Also, the RCS reduction effect was analyzed using detectable radar range.

  • This paper proposes an acceleration of the multi-level fast multipole algorithm(MLFMA) by using a double interpolation method. The MLFMA has been primarily used to conduct scattering analysis of electrically large targets, e.g. stealth aircraft. In the MLFMA, radiation functions of each basis functions are first precomputed, and then aggregated. After transfer calculations for the aggregations, each interaction is disaggregated, and then received in the testing function. The key idea of the proposed method is to decrease the sampling rates of the radiation and receiving functions. The computational complexity of the unit sphere integration in terms of the testing functions is thus highly alleviated. The remaining insufficient sampling rate is then complemented by using additional interpolation. We demonstrate the performance of the proposed method through radar cross-section(RCS) calculations for realistic aircraft.
