In order to improve the reliability of stator windings for hydro generators, it is necessary to detect the defective point and life assessment of the high voltage windings. Especially the on-line partial discharge (PD) test provides the ability to monitor effects, such as slot discharge, internal discharge, and end-winding discharge without interrupting generators, this method has been proven the major testing technology in high voltage rotating machines nowadays. The purpose of this paper is to describe the method of the on-line PD measurement on stator windings for hydro-generator with 13 [kV] class ceramic coupler (CC), on-line PD measuring system, terminal box, and index parameters. Also, the developed PD measuring system and 13 [kV] class CC were installed Daechung-dam generator #2. It was found that this installed sensor and system had good electrical characteristics to detect PD activity during the operating condition with its detection frequency band is between several and several tens MHz.
In hydro-generator, a groundwall insulation of stator windings gradually deteriorates due to mechanical, thermal, electrical and environmental stresses. These stresses combine to result in loose windings, delamination of the stator insulation and/or electrical tracking of the end winding, all of which can lead to stator insulation failures. Conventionally, off-line tests such as partial discharge measurement, DC/AC current test and ${\Delta}tan{\delta}$ test has been used for estimation of winding condition. However, off-line test requires large power supply and generator outage. In addition, major cause of insulation problems such as loose wedges and slot discharges may not be found with off-line diagnoses. This paper describes the on-line partial discharge measurement techniques in the generator stator windings. The experimental results from the UIAM #1 hydro-generator confirms a optimistic application of on-line generator diagnosis method as a reliable tool for evaluation of winding condition.
Prior to destructive testing, diagnostic tests were performed in eight high voltage motors. Diagnostic tests included polarization index, ac current, dissipation factor($tan{\delta}$) and partial discharge magnitude. The rewind of motor stator insulation at rated voltage is assessed by the results of these tests. After completing the diagnostic tests, the stator windings of motors were subjected to gradually increasing ac voltage, until the insulation punctured. No. 1 motor failed near rated voltage of 12.96 kV. The breakdown voltage of No. 4 motor was 6.99 kV which is lower that expected for good quality coils in 6.6 kV class motors. The failure was located in a line-end coil at the exit from the core slot. These two motors began operation in 1994. While testing No. 7 motor, flashover occurred between the stator winding and the stator frame at 15 kV. The relationship between the diagnostic test and the drop in insulation breakdown voltage was analyzed.
Prior to destructive testing, diagnostic tests were performed in ten high voltage motors. The rewind of motet slater insulation at rated voltage is assessed by the results of these tests. After completing the diagnostic tests, the stator windings of motors were subjected to gradually increasing ac voltage, until the insulation punctured. No. 8 motor failed near rated voltage of 19.0 kV. The breakdown voltage of No. 4 motet was 7.0 kV which is lower that expected for good quality coils in 6.6 kV class motors. The work described in this paper is to investigate the additional iron losses and consequent temperatures in core ends of a turbo-generator wound with high voltage cables. Electromagnetic calculations are made with 3D FE models, which include the lamination material with anisotropic properties both in magnetic permeability and electric conductivity. The models also include the geometry of the stator teeth and eventually the axial steps designated to reduce the core end losses. The 3D model of the rotor consists of field windings with straight in-slot parts and end windings. The thermal models are simplified into two dimensions and include the heat sources dumped from the 3D electromagnetic solutions. The influences of power factor on additional iron losses are studied for this cable wound machine and conventional machines. The calculation results show that the additional iron losses can be reduced to about $15\%$ by introducing some small steps around the airgap corner of core ends.
During a routine inspection of a large pump motor at power plant, white powder was found on the surface of the stator end windings. Visual inspection and high voltage insulation diagnosis was performed to determine whether this motor is available. The purpose of this paper is to understand the insulation properties of white powder found on high voltage stator and to know prevention of insulation weakness.
In comparison with conventional motors, Superconducting Homopolar Synchronous Motors (SHSMs) have advantages that it generates high magnetic field by superconducting winding. Therefore, superconducting coil used in SHSM can reduce the motor size and enhance the motor efficiency for high torque applications under the space constraints for propulsion system. During the design process of SHSM, it is required to evaluate the performance of initial design model, that is accurately analyzed using 3D magnetic field modeling large air-gap and flux distribution of axial direction is properly taken into account. In this paper, we analyze magnetic field of a homopolar motor with a 4-pole homopolar rotor and a stator of 3 phase windings. The field analysis is done using 3D finite element analysis which can reflect the end effect and overhang winding. And we extract mutual inductances between a rotor wind and the 3 stator windings. The extracted inductances are used for evaluation of overall motor performances that are calculated with generalized circuit theory of electrical machines.
Many generating stations in korea are 25 years or more old, and are nearing the end of their planned life. Financial conditions and Site, Environment problems have made approval for construction of new stations increasingly difficult, and extending the life of an existing older plant may be a palatable alternative. Therefore, To determine whether generator rewinds are necessary to achieve an extended life, and Methods are required to estimate the proable remaining life of existing winding, here, We are going to estimate insolation condition through Nondestructive diagonostic test and Aging history tests of generator Stator winding and winding conditions through deterioration characteristics due to Heat cycle.
In this paper a new coupling method for efficient and simple analysis of single phase induction motor is presented. The circuit representation of both the stator winding and each conducting rotor loop (composed of rotor bar and end ring segment) is used in conjunction with the distribution of magnetic flux linkage instead of inductance matrix. The flux linkage is calculated using air-gap flux density distributions driven by unit currents in the stator windings and rotor bars. The field distribution of one turn of a coil is calculated by FEM and the result is used to calculate total flux linkage by employing a coordinate transformation. The numerical results give good agreement with prior literature. The method is particularly effective in analyzing the effect of the number of rotor bars.
