  • Purpose: This study was to investigate nursing students' attitude to death, death-related education experience and educational needs. Methods: The participants of this study were 1,134 nursing students' studying in three universities in Gyeonsangnam-do. Data collection was carried out from October 1st to November 31st, 2010. The collected data was analyzed for descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and Sheffe test using PASW Statistics 18.0. Results: The level of attitude to death of the subjects averaged 2.60. The item receiving the lowest score was 'I am not afraid of a long, slow death'. Approximately 62.0% of the nursing students' had no death-related education experience and 89.8% of those answered that death-related education was necessary. For attitude to death followed by general characteristics, death-related education experience and educational needs, there were significant differences in attitude to death according to gender, religion, perceived health status, worrying about problems, motivation of nursing, and an experience with death. Conclusion: As nursing students' have a high educational need university curriculum development and educational programs addressing death should be developed and applied to nursing students.

  • Minard's figurative map is an infographic on Napoleon's Russian Campaign of 1812. Tufte (The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, Graphics Press, 1983) declared that Napoleon's March "may well be the best statistical graphic ever produced." We can use this data map as storytelling material for data visualization education. In this paper, with Minard's figurative map, we study four themes (infographics, information design, Minard, and the Russian Campaign) in data visualization education.

  • It has already been fifty years since the Korean peninsula was divided into two nations, South and North Korea. Owing to forming different political and social structures with each other, we can conjecture that there are much heterogeneity in education. On the assumption that education plays important role in coming to an accommodation and in restoring homogeneity of the Korean race after unification, we consider the investigation of the contents of mathematics text-book of secondary schools as a meaningful research to make provision against unification. In this paper, we shall investigate the learning contents, and the teaming substances and sequences in mathematics of secondary schools between South and North Korea by falling into four regions; algebra and statistics, analysis and geometry. By grasping the special features of terms, teaming subject matters and learning substances, and clarifying their distinctions, we shall present some reforms measure of distinctions.

  • The purpose of this paper is to show how much the subjects based on the mathematics and statistics contribute to the curriculum and the education of the students majoring in engineer of the Computer-Software department, and to recognize the roles of mathematics and statistics in the Computer-Software department. In order to advance the world-class Computer-Software department, it is necessary for Math/Stat to ensure the role as a basis for the Computer-Software majors as well as to extend its role to relate the core studies of the Computer-Software majors. Consequently, the recognition of Math/Stat in the Computer-Software major will enable to establish the short or/and long-tern plan for student education.

  • Statistics by structural equation modeling techniques were used to assess a model of chemistry learning strategy based on performance goal orientation. In the optimal Model III of this research, Performance-approach goal was positively related to the use of learning strategy(p<.05) and achievement need(p<.05). Performance-avoidance goal was negatively related to learning strategy(p<.05) and was positively related to self-handicapping tendency(p<.15). Performance-approach goal affected learning strategy indirectly through achievement need(p<.05). Use of achievement need was positively related to learning strategy(p<.05) and self-handicapping tendency(p<.35). Self-handicapping tendency affected learning strategy negatively(p<.05). Implications of these findings for learning strategy in chemistry education are discussed.

  • In this study, we gave 132 high school students fifteen probabilities and nine statistics problems of the Korean College Scholastic Aptitude Test and then analyzed their answer using the classical test theory and the item response theory. Using the classical test theory (the Testian 1.0) we get the item reliability ($0.730 \sim 0.765$), and using the item response theory (the Bayesian 1.0) we get the item difficulty ( $-2.32\sim0.83$ ) and discrimination ( $0.55\sim 2.71$). From results, we find out what and why students could not understand well.

  • In this study, a program for statistics education is developed. This program deals with statistical hypothesis testing which is indispensible to demonstrate the research hypothesis. Statistical inference which is the process of using data obtained from a sample to make inference about the characteristics of a population is an essential concept to peoples to learn or use statistics. But in practice, there are many cases of wrong application and peoples think that statistics is hard to understand. Therefore, it is very important subject to teach easily and rightly statistics, specially elementary statistics. This program is developed especially for non-specialist. This program under multimedia environment which includes sound, video, animation etc. can interest students greatly. It doesn't show only the result but make it possible for students to execute the program by stages. By executing it, the students can understand the method and meaning of statistical hypothesis testing naturally.

  • Previous research has recently shown that non-cognitive factors such as attitudes toward statistics contribute positively to statistics learning, Hence, helping students develop positive attitudes toward statistics has become one of the essential goals of statistics teaching. A wide variety of instruments assessing attitudes toward statistics were developed and validated in foreign countries, but not many in Korea. The SATS-36(Survey of Attitudes Toward Statistics-36; Schau et al., 1995) has been regarded as one of the most valid measures of attitudes toward statistics. Therefore, this study was designed to validate a Korean version of Survey of Attitudes Toward Statistics(K-SATS). Instead of six factors of the original scale, a five-factor structure including interests, value, cognitive competence, difficulty, and effort was empirically supported by the Korean student sample. The results evidenced high reliability and construct validity of K-SATS. In addition, students' attitudes towards statistics differed across gender, level of statistics courses, degree programs, and major. These findings were discussed in terms of their implications for future research and statistics teaching.

  • The purpose of this study is to find the correlation between the level of 6th graders' achievement level in Probability and Statistics education, which were proposed in the curriculum, which targeted the 6th graders in the elementary school, and statistical literacy. For this, first, questions asking the achievement level in the probability and statistics(Part A), and questions asking the statistical literacy(Part B), were used to study the achievement level of the students. Second, the achievement level in the probability and statistics, and the statistical literacy were measured. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, questionnaire that consists of 10 questions was invented. The questionnaire was divided into Part 1 and Part 2 under the consideration upon the characteristics of the questions. The results of the questionnaires given to the students were classified into "high, medium, and low" and were separated into 7 categories. Results of comparing category 3 and category 6, which have shown opposing tendencies, we could find that students who are good at school mathematics and students with high statistical literacy have respective and different characteristics. For actually effective statistical education, consideration upon and reflection of core aspects such as intuition and critical thinking in the curriculum are needed.

  • The objective of this study is to develop university-level program(UP) 'Statistics Curriculum'. The UP program is a Korean curriculum sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Technology, which offers standardized courses to high school students that are generally recognized to be equivalent to undergraduate courses in college. In this paper we analyze that various programs are being conducted currently in Korea and overseas related with University-level Program in mathematics. And we describe course of the study, mathematical objectives of developed statistics curriculum on the study.
