  • The need for high-strength, multi-axis, and multi-functional machine tools has recently increased because of part complexity and workpiece strength. However, most of the machine tool manufacturers rely on experience for a detailed design because of the shortcomings in the existing design technology. This study uses a topology optimization method to more effectively design a large multi-functional machine tool considering static stiffness. The ram, saddle, and column parts are important structures in a machine tool. Hence, they are selected for the finite element method analysis. Based on this analysis, the optimized internal rib structure for those parts is designed for desirable rigidity and weight. This structure could possibly provide the required design technology for machine tool manufacturers.

  • The static and dynamic responses of guyed telecommunication towers can be determined by using two models, the space truss element model, and the equivalent beam-column element model. The equivalent beam-column analysis is based on the determination of the equivalent shear, torsion, and bending rigidities as well as the equivalent area of the guyed mast. In the literature, two methods are currently available to determine the equivalent properties of lattice structures, namely: the unit load method, and the energy approach. In this study, an equivalent beam-column analysis is introduced based on an equivalent thin plate approach for lattice structures. A finite-element modeling, using suitably modified ABAQUS software, is used to investigate the accuracy of utilizing the different proposed methods in determining the static and dynamic responses of a guyed tower of 364.5-meter high subjected to static and seismic loading conditions. The results from these analyses are compared to those obtained from a finite-element modeling of the actual structure using 3-D truss and beam elements. Good agreement is shown between the different proposed beam-column models, and the model of the actual structure. However, the proposed equivalent thin plate approach is simpler to apply than the other two approaches.

  • The fluid-structure interaction analysis such as a static aeroelastic analysis requires the result of each analysis as an input to the other analysis. Usually the grids for the fluid analysis and the structural analysis are different, so the results should be transformed properly for each other. The Infinite Plate Spline(IPS) and the Thin Plate Spline(TPS) are used in interpolating the displacement and the pressure. In this study, such interpolation methods are compared with kriging which provides a precise response surface. The static aeroelastic analysis is performed for the supersonic flow field with shock waves and the pressure field is interpolated by the TPS and kriging. The TPS shows tendency to weaken the shock strength, whereas kriging preserves the shock strength.

  • Quasi-static three-point bending tests on sandwich beams with expanded metal sheets as core were conducted. Relationships between the force and displacement at the mid-span of the sandwich beams were obtained from the experiments. Numerical simulations were carried out using ABAQUS/EXPLCIT and the results were thoroughly compared with the experimental results. A parametric analysis was performed using a Box-Behnken design (BBD) for the design of experiments (DOE) techniques and a finite element modeling. Then, the influence of the core layers number, size of the cell and, thickness of the substrates was investigated. The results showed that the increase in the size of the expanded metal cell in a reasonable range was required to improve the performance of the structure under bending collapse. It was found that core layers number and size of the cell was key factors governing the quasi-static response of the sandwich beams with lattice cores.

  • In this paper the Modified Finite Element-Transfer Matrix Method, which is the combination of Transfer Matrix Method and Finite Element Method, is applied to the static analysis of the structures. In the method, the structure is divided into substructures thus the number of unknowns that need to be worked out is reduced due to the transformation process. The static analysis of the structures can be performed easily and speedily by the proposed method. At the end of the study examples are presented for ensuring the agreement between the proposed method and classic Finite Element Method.

  • Moving flexible structures such as transfer systems in press machine, crane, working table of machine tools have vibration problems because of starting, feeding and stopping. An analysis method is suggested and experimentally studied in order to solve a vibration problem of a moving flexible structure. In this method, the concepts of substructure synthesis method and semi-static displacement including rigid body mode were used. Total deformation of a structure was assumed to be composed of quasi-static and dynamic components. Experimental results from an elementary model of a transfer feeder showed good agreements with computational results.

  • A wide literature review on Static Soil-Structure-Interaction (SSI) is done to highlight the key impacts of soil complexity on structural members of framed structures. Attention is paid to the developed approaches, i.e., conventional and Finite Element Method (FEM), to emphasize on deficiencies and merits of the proposed methods according to their applicability, accuracy and power to model and idealization of the superstructures as well as the soil continuum. Proposed hypothesis are much deeply discussed herein for better understanding which is normally neglected in literature review papers due to the large number of references and limit of space.
