Estimating the Glass Transition of Oligosaccharides Mixtures through the State Diagram

  • State diagram of highly concentrated branched oligosaccharides (HBOS) was constructed to better understand phase behavior of mixtures with different size of oligosaccharides. It showed dramatic plasticizing effect on glass transition, which was successfully described based on Couchman-Karasz equation model. $T_g$' estimated from state diagram corresponded well with previous empirical data measured by maximum ice formation through isothermal holding (annealing) process. Estimated $T_g$' and $C_g$' values were $-36.3^{\circ}C$ and 79.99%, respectively. $T_g$' value of HBOS was approximately $10^{\circ}C$ higher than that of sucrose, while $C_g$' value was similar to those of general carbohydrate materials, which could be useful for applications in frozen system.

  • This paper aims to present a polynomial approach to the steady-state optimal filtering for delayed systems. The design of the steady-state filter involves solving one polynomial equation and one spectral factorization. The key problem in this paper is the derivation of spectral factorization for systems with delayed measurement, which is more difficult than the standard systems without delays. To get the spectral factorization, we apply the reorganized innovation approach. The calculation of spectral factorization comes down to two Riccati equations with the same dimension as the original systems.

  • Along with the computation and analysis for nonlinear system being more and more involved in the fields such as automation control electronic technique and electrical power system the nonlin-ear theory has become quite a attractive field for academic research. In this paper we derives the solutions for state equation of nonlinear system by using the inverse operator expression of the so-lutions is obtained. An actual computation example is given giving a comparison between IOM and Runge-kutta method. It has been proved by our investigation that IOM has some distinct advantages over usual approximation methods in that it is computationally con-venient rapidly convergent provides accurate solutions not requiring perturbation linearization or the massive computation inherent in discrietization methods such as finite differences. So the IOM pro-vides an effective method for the solution of nonlinear system is of potential application valuable in nonlinear computation.

최적화 기법을 이용한 HDD용 헤드 슬라이더의 부상상태 해석 (A Flying State Analysis of HDD Head Slider by Using An Optimization Technique)

  • This paper suggests a method to predict the flying state of the head slider in a hard disk drive (HDD) by using an optimization technique. The modified Reynolds equation for the hydrodynamic lubrication theory under the slip flow condition is used to describe the air-bearing system and a Finite Volume Method (FVM) is applied to solve the equation. Especially, Augmented Lagrange Multiplier (ALM) method is employed to find the minimum flying height, the pitch angle and the roll angle of the slider, which is shown to be faster and more general than the conventional update schemes. By using the proposed method, the variations of the flying state are analyzed as a function of the slider position in the direction of the disk radius for various disk velocities and skew angles.

Phase Transitions and Phase Diagram of the Island Model with Migration

  • We investigate the evolutionary dynamics and the phase transitions of the island model which consists of subdivided populations of individuals confined to two islands. In the island model, the population is subdivided so that migration acts to determine the evolutionary dynamics along with selection and genetic drift. The individuals are assumed to be haploid and to be one of two species, X or Y. They reproduce according to their fitness values, die at random, and migrate between the islands. The evolutionary dynamics of an individual based model is formulated in terms of a master equation and is approximated by using the diffusion method as the multidimensional Fokker-Planck equation (FPE) and the coupled non-linear stochastic differential equations (SDEs) with multiplicative noise. We analyze the infinite population limit to find the phase transitions from the monomorphic state of one type to the polymorphic state to the monomorphic state of the other type as we vary the ratio of the fitness values in two islands and complete the phase diagram of our island model.

  • Inverse coefficient identification problems associated with the fourth-order Sturm-Liouville operator in the steady state Euler-Bernoulli beam equation are investigated. Unlike previous studies in which spectral data are used as additional information, in this paper only boundary information is used, hence non-destructive tests can be employed in practical applications.

  • Quadratic weighting matrices have an effect on the transition and steady state responses in a LQ tracking problem. They are usually decided on trial and error in order to get a good response. In this paper a method is presented which calculates a steady - state deviation without solving Riccati equation. By using this method, a new procedure for selecting the weighting matrices is proposed when a tolerance on the steady - state deviation is given.

  • In this paper, we prove the existence of mild solutions for a first order impulsive neutral differential inclusion with state dependent delay. We assume that the state-dependent delay part generates an analytic resolvent operator and transforms it into an integral equation. By using a fixed point theorem for condensing multi-valued maps, a main existence theorem is established.

  • The activation energy of dissociative adsorption of oxygen on polycrystalline nickel surface is calculated from adsorption isotherms obtained using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Negative value of this activation energy (-5.9 kJ/mol) indicates that the adsorption takes place through an undissociated precursor state. An adsorption energy for this precursor state is calculated assuming the precursor state as a moleculary physisorbed state ($E_{ad}$ = -7.9 kJ/mol). Finally, an adsorption isotherm equation is derived as a function of the gas exposure, which agrees with the experimental isotherms reasonably good.
