  • An experimental study was performed to establish the validity of an on-line state estimator for a semibatch MMA-MA copolymerization reactor by using on-line densitometer and viscometer under two different operating conditions; one without additional solvent feed and the other with solvent fed additionally. A conventional extended Kalman filter (EKF) was used as the state estimator and the experiment was conducted for the purpose of application to the control of copolymer properties. Further analysis was made by using off-line measurement data for the mole fraction of MMA in the remaining monomers and the solid content. It was found that the EKF could provide a good estimate for the states of the copolymerzation system ...

  • Thermal deformation of machine tools can be evaluated from the analysis of the whole temperature field. However, it is extremely inefficient and impossible to acquire the whole temperature field by measuring temperatures of every point. So, a temperature estimator, which can estimate the whole temperature field from the temperatures of just a few points, is required. In this paper, 1-dimensional heat transfer problem is modeled with modal analysis and state space equations. and then state observer is designed to estimate the intensity of heat source and the whole temperature field in real-time. The reliability of this estimator is verified by making a comparison between solutions by the proposed method and the exact solutions of examples. The proposed method is applied to the estimation of temperature distribution in a ball screw system.

  • Existence of leverage points was claimed to be the reason for the WLAV estimator failing to reject bad data in the measurements. This paper presents an impact of leverage points on the result of power system state estimation. State estimator is run with measurement sets with gross error and leverage point. Three test cases are performed and the results are presented using IEEE 30 bus system.

  • In this study, the recently developed unscented Kalman filter (UKF) technique is studied for identification of nonlinear structural dynamic systems as an alternative to the extended Kalman filter (EKF). The EKF, which was originally developed as a state estimator for nonlinear systems, has been frequently employed for parameter identification by introducing the state vector augmented with the unknown parameters to be identified. However, the EKF has several drawbacks such as biased estimations and erroneous estimations especially for highly nonlinear dynamic systems due to its crude linearization scheme. To overcome the weak points of the EKF, the UKF was recently developed as a state estimator. Numerical simulation studies have been carried out on nonlinear SDOF system and nonlinear MDOF system. The results from a series of numerical simulations indicate that the UKF is superior to the EKF in the system identification of nonlinear dynamic systems especially highly nonlinear systems.

  • This paper focuses on the $H_{\infty}$ filter design problem for offshore steel jacket platforms. Its objective is to design a full-order state observer for offshore platforms in presence of unknown disturbances. To make the method more practical, it is assumed that the measured variables are available at discrete-time instants with time-varying sampling time intervals. By modelling the sampling intervals as a bounded time-varying delay, the estimation error system is expressed as a time-delay system. As a result, the addressed problem can be transformed to the problem of stability of dynamic error between the system and the state estimator. Then, based on the Lyapunov-Krasovskii Functional (LKF), a stability criterion is obtained in the form of Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). According to the stability criterion, a sufficient condition on designing the state estimator gain is obtained. In the end, the proposed method is applied to an offshore platform to show its effectiveness.

  • A new approach to $H_{\infty}$ multi-step prediction is developed by applying the innovation analysis theory. Although the predictor is derived by resorting to state augmentation, nevertheless, it is completely different from the previous works with state augmentation. The augmented state here is considered just as a theoretical mathematic tool for deriving the estimator. A distributed algorithm for the Riccati equation of the augmented system is presented. By using the reorganized innovation analysis, calculation of the estimator does not require any augmentation. A numerical example demonstrates the effect in reducing computing burden.

  • Auto-Pilot System uses heading angle information via the position sensor and the rudder device to control the ship's direction. Most of the control logics are composed of the state estimation and control algorithms assuming that the measurement device and the actuator have no fault except the measurement noise. But such asumptions could bring the danger in real situation. For example, if the heading angle measuring device is out of order the control action based on those false position information could bring serious safety problem. In this study, the control system including improved method for processing the position information is applied to the Auto-Pilot System. To show the difference between general state estimator and F.D.F., BJDFs for the sensor and the actuator failure detection are designed and the performance are tested. And it is shown that bias error in sensor could be detected by state-augmented estimator. So the residual confined in the 2-dimension in the presence of the sensor failure could be unidirectional in output space and bias sensor error is much easier to be detected.

  • The standard estimation and filtering theory are well known and has recently been incorporated with the H$_{\infty}$ optimization techniques where the parametrizations of all estimators and filters are utilized. The issue of reducing its order is always of interest. This paper presents a method for synthesizing low-order stable state estimators. The method presented in this paper is based on the utilization of a free parameter function contained in the parametrization of all state estimators. The results obtained in the paper are compared with standard results on low-order estimators. Both results are shown to be the same in a sense of its orders, but the approaches taken are largely different. It is also shown in the paper that the method can easily and directly be extended to the Kalman filters and the H$_{\infty}$ (sub)optimal filters. Consequently, the orders of all state estimators, Kalman filters, and H$_{\infty}$ filters are shown to be reduced down to the number of states minus the number of outputs, respectively.ly.
