  • We present BV photometric observations and high-resolution spectra of AO Ser, which were obtained at the Mt. Lemmon Optical Astronomy Observatory (LOAO) and the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO), respectively, in 2017. The radial velocities (RVs) for both components were measured, and the effective temperature of the primary star was found to be $T_{eff,1}=8,820{\pm}62K$ by a comparison of the observed spectra and the Kurucz models. A unique set of fundamental parameters of AO Ser were derived for the first time by a simultaneous analysis of the light and RV curves. The results indicate that our program target is a semi-detached eclipsing system with values of $M_1=2.06{\pm}0.11M_{\odot}$ and $M_2=0.41{\pm}0.03M_{\odot}$, $R_1=1.54{\pm}0.03R_{\odot}$ and $R_2=1.30{\pm}0.02R_{\odot}$, and $L_1=12.9{\pm}0.2L_{\odot}$ and $L_2=0.9{\pm}0.3L_{\odot}$. We applied multiple frequency analyses to the eclipse-subtracted light residuals. As a result, two frequencies of $f_1=21.85151days^{-1}$ and $f_2=23.48405days^{-1}$ were detected and their pulsation constants were calculated to $Q_1=0.0344days$ and $Q_2=0.0320days$. The pulsational characteristics and the position in the HR diagram demonstrate that the primary star is a ${\delta}$ Sct pulsator.

  • Isolated galaxies in low-density regions are significant in the sense that they are least affected by the hierarchical pattern of galaxy growth and interactions with perturbers at least for the last few Gyr. To form a comprehensive picture of the star formation history of isolated galaxies, we construct a catalog of isolated galaxies and their comparison sample in relatively denser environments. The galaxies are drawn from SDSS DR7 in the redshift range of 0.025 < z < 0.044. We performed visual inspection and classified their morphology following the Hubble classification scheme. We have investigated the color-magnitude diagram and found elliptical and unbarred spiral galaxies in isolated systems are relatively fainter and bluer than those in denser regions. For the spectroscopic study, we make use of the OSSY catalog (Oh et al. 2011). Our analysis on the absorption-line properties based on the comparison with stellar population models suggests that isolated elliptical galaxies are likely to be younger and metal poorer, while isolated Sc-type galaxies seem to have older luminosity-weighted ages, than their high-density counterpart. In addition, according to the BPT diagnostics, early-type galaxies among isolated galaxies are rather evenly classified into star forming, composite, Seyfert and LINER, whereas their comparisons are mainly populated in the LINER region. On the other hand, late-type galaxies do not show any prominent difference. We discuss the evolutionary histories of isolated galaxies in the context of the standard ${\Lambda}CDM$ cosmology.

  • One of the major limitations of productivity and quality in metal cutting is the machining accuracy of machine tools. The machining accuracy is affected by geometric errors, thermally-induced errors, and the deterioration of the machine tools. Geometric and thermal errors of machine tools should be measured and compensated to manufacture high quality products. In metal cutting, the machining accuracy is more affected by thermal errors than by geometric errors. This paper models the thermal errors for error analysis and develops an on-the-machine measurement system by which the volumetric errors are measured and compensated. The thermal error is modeled by means of angularity errors of a column and thermal drift error of the spindle unit which are measured by the touch probe unit with a star type styluses and a designed spherical ball artifact (SBA). Experiments show that the developed system provides a high measuring accuracy, with repeatability of $\pm$2$\mu\textrm{m}$ in X, Y and Z directions. It is believed that the developed measurement system can be also applied to the machine tools with CNC controller. In addition, machining accuracy and product quality can be also improved by using the developed measurement system when the spherical ball artifact is mounted on a modular fixture.

  • The light curve and radial velocity curve of multiperiodic dwarf cepheid VI719 Cyg (HD200925) with peculiar light curve have been reanalyzed in order to identify the oscillation modes to confirm the helium settling within the envelope. To do these, through the period search for the photometric and radial velocity data from the literature, two different periods were determined and the oscillation modes corresponding to the first and second periods were identified as the fundamental and first radial overtones. Hence the helium settling within the envelope was confirmed from the period ratio. The color excess, metallicity, effective temperature, and surface gravity corresponding to two different modes were determined and it was found that these parameters almost do not depend upon different oscillation mode. By utilizing the surface brightness method, we investigated the variation of angular diameter and radial displacement and it was found that the angular variation is very peculiar. Also by referring to the stellar models, mass and age were determined as $2.7M_{\bigodot}$ and 0.42 Gyr respectively which make this variable star heavier and younger than other multimode dwarf cepheids. Preliminary spectroscopic CCD observations were carried out and it was found that Mg in VI719 Cygni is nearly solar abundent according to the analysis of $5172.68{\AA}MgI$ line which is inconsistent with the photometric result. It was suggested that VI719 Cyg may be classified as a $\rho$ Pup stars according to the photometric characteristics.

  • We investigate physical properties of the nearby (∼ 7.5 pc) astrometric binary μ Cas in the context of standard evolutionary theory. Based on the spectroscopically determined relative abundances ([α/Fe] ≳ +0.4 dex, [Fe/H] ∼ −0.7 dex), all physical inputs such as opacities and equation of state are consistently generated. By combining recent spectroscopic analyses with the astrometric observations from the HIPPARCOS parallaxes and the CHARA array, the evolutionary model grids have been constructed. Through the statistical evaluation of the χ2-minimization among alternative models, we find a reliable evolutionary solution (MA, MB, tage) = (0.74 M, 0.19 M, 11 Gyr) which excellently satisfies observational constraints. In particular, we find that the helium abundance of μ Cas is comparable with the primordial helium contents (Yp ∼ 0.245). On the basis of the well-defined stellar parameters of the primary star, the internal structure and the p-mode frequencies have been estimated. From our seismic computation, μ Cas is expected to have a first order spacing ∆ν ∼ 169 μHz. The ultimate goal of this study is to describe physical processes inside a low-mass star through a complete modelling from the spectroscopic observation to the evolutionary computation.

  • With a recent observational study of extended Lyman-alpha halos around individual high-z star-forming galaxies by Leclercq et al. (2017) using MUSE, we perform radiative transfer calculations to see if Lyman-alpha scattering can explain the spatial extents of the halos together with their spectra. We adopt a spherically-symmetric halo model in which Lyman-alpha sources and neutral hydrogen (HI) medium have exponential density distributions. The HI medium is set to have outflowing motion based on a momentum-driven wind scenario in a gravitational potential well. We run our Lyman-alpha radiative transfer code, LaRT, upon this halo model for various sets of parameters regarding the HI medium such as temperature, optical depth, density scale radius, outflow velocities, and dust content. We analyze simulation results to see the impact of each parameter on Lyman-alpha spectra and surface brightness profiles, and degeneracies between the parameters. We also find a parameter set that best reproduces simultaneously the observed spectra and surface brightness profiles of the MUSE Lyman-alpha halos.

  • Luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs; $L_{IR}$ > ${10^{11}}_{Lsun}$) are the most powerful objects in the local Universe. Previous work suggested that dust re-processing of starburst and/or active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity, triggered by galaxy interactions, is responsible for their enormous infrared emission. To understand the nature of LIRGs, it is essential to determine their spectral types. Optical spectral types of 115 ultraluminous infrared galaxies in the southern sky are presented using CTIO observations. The AGN fraction is on average 50% and increases with infrared luminosity. Near-infrared spectral types of 36 LIRGs are also presented based on AKARI observations. In the sample, 12 optically elusive buried AGNs are found. To investigate the evolutionary sequence of LIRGs, star formation histories of ~6000 LIRGs in the SDSS and IRAS/AKARI matched sample are derived by comparing observed optical spectra and stellar population models. AGN-dominated LIRGs are currently massive relative to starburst-dominated LIRGs, which originates from an enhancement of star formation at intermediate-ages. For ~1100 early-type LIRGs, optical and NIR fundamental planes (FPs) are constructed. The FP of LIRGs is significantly different from that of normal early-type galaxies, but the difference is minimized in low luminous and AGN-like LIRGs. These findings support that the importance of AGN is growing as infrared luminosity increases and that LIRGs follow at least in the high mass regime the standard evolutionary scenario: starburst LIRGs evolve into AGN LIRGs and finally into normal early-type galaxies.

  • The Henyey-Greenstein (H-G) phase function, which is characterized by a single parameter, has been generally used to approximate the realistic dust-scattering phase function in investigating scattering properties of the interstellar dust. Draine (2003) proposed a new analytic phase function with two parameters and showed that the realistic phase function is better represented by his phase function. If the H-G and Draine's phase functions are significantly different, using the H-G phase function in radiative transfer models may lead to wrong conclusions about the dust-scattering properties. Here, we investigate whether the H-G and Draine's phase functions would indeed produce significant differences in radiative transfer calculations for two simple configurations. For the uniformly distributed dust with an illuminating star at the center, no significant difference is found. However, up to ~ 20% of difference is found when the central star is surrounded by a spherical-shell dust medium and the radiation of $\lambda$ < $2000\;{\AA}$ is considered. It would mean that the investigation of dust-scattering properties using the H-G phase function may produce errors of up to ~ 20% depending on the geometry of dust medium and the radiation wavelength. This amount of uncertainty would be, however, unavoidable since the configurations of dust density and radiation sources are only approximately available.

  • We report X-ray timing and spectral properties of the pulsar PSR J0205+6449 measured using NuSTAR and Chandra observatories. We measure the pulsar's rotation frequency ν = 15.20102357(9) s-1 and its derivative $\dot{\nu}=-4.5(1){\times}10^{-11}\;s^{-2}$ during the observation period, and model the 2-30 keV on-pulse spectrum of the pulsar with a power law having a photon index Γpsr = 1.07 ± 0.16 and a 2-30 keV flux F2-30 keV = 7.3±0.6 × 10-13 erg cm-2 s-1. The Chandra 0.5-10 keV data are analyzed for an investigation of the pulsar's thermal emission properties. We use thermal and non-thermal emission models to fit the Chandra spectra and infer the surface temperature T∞ and luminosity Lth of the neutron star to be T∞ = 0.5 - 0.8 MK and Lth = 1 - 5 × 1032 erg s-1. This agrees with previous results which indicated that PSR J0205+6449 has a low surface temperature and luminosity for its age of 800-5600 yrs.
