Optimization of hydraulic section of irrigation canals in cold regions based on a practical model for frost heave

  • An optimal hydraulic section is critical for irrigated water conservancy in seasonal frozen ground due to a large proportion of water leakage, as investigated by in-situ surveys. This is highly correlated with the frost heave of underlain soils in cold season. This paper firstly derived a practical model for frost heave of clayey soils, with temperature dependent thermal indexes incorporating phase change effect. A model test carried out on clay was used to verify the rationality of the model. A novel approach for optimizing the cross-section of irrigation canals in cold regions was suggested with live updated geometry characterized by three unique geometric constraints including slope of canal, ratio of practical flow section to the optimal and lining thickness. Allowable frost heave deformation and tensile stress in canal lining are utilized as standard in computation iterating with geometry updating while the construction cost per unit length is regarded as the eventual target in optimization. A typical section along the Jinghui irrigation canal was selected to be optimized with the above requirements satisfied. Results prove that the optimized hydraulic section exhibits smaller frost heave deformation, lower tensile stress and lower construction cost.

  • This study materializes body type measurement based on ISO(International Standard Organization)size system, targeting 1381 Chinese women, and suggests clothes size standards. It provides basic information on Chinese women size for Korean clothes companies advanced in China to strengthen the national competitiveness of Korean clothing industry. First, after the body type examination, based on the ISO's drop value, the results of types are in its decreasing order: A, M, H, and D. Second, women upper garment sizes by body types are set in the section of height 152cm, 160cm, and 168cm. Garment sizes are suggested based on the section that has more than 0.8% of appearance rate for the survey target: A, H, and M. Third, the clothes sizes of women pants are set in the section of height 152cm, 160cm, and 168cm just with the same as the upper garment.

  • The prestressed concrete girder bridges have been used widely at the domestic national road as well as highway because it is great in the functional and economical efficiency. Also it has the advantage of convenience of design and construction due to being given standard sections. However it could be easily verified that a standard section of P.S.C girder is excessive design, which has much more redundancy than is necessary against design loads. Thus, in this paper the formulation of the optimum design for PSC girder railway bridge is suggested and dominant design variables and constraints are inquired as performing the optimum design. The objective is adopted as total cost of PSC girder bridge ,and in order to effective optimum design, design variables are formulated as PSC girder section dimension and girder space as well. And constraints are formulated according to Korean railway design specification and considering construction-ability such as PS anchorage and girder space. Using the proposed optimum design system, optimum PSC girder bridge design has been performed. And from the results of analysis it is suggested to denote the optimum section which satisfies the structural safety ,and economical efficiency all together.

  • The European Union has instituted a new emission standard protocol that necessitates real-time measurements from vehicles on actual roads. The adequate development of routes for real driving emissions (RDE) mandates substantial resources, encompassing both vehicles and a portable emission measurement system (PEMS). In this study, a simulation tool was utilized to predict the vehicle speed traversing the routes developed for the RDE measurements. Initially, the vehicle powertrain system was modeled for both a gasoline hybrid vehicle and a gasoline engine-only vehicle. Subsequently, the speed profile for the specified vehicle was constructed based on the RDE route developed for the EURO-6 standard. Finally, the predicted vehicle speed profiles for highway and urban routes were assessed utilizing the actual driving data. The driving model predicted more consistency in the vehicle speed at each driving section. Meanwhile, the human driver tended to accelerate further, and then decelerate in each section, instead of cruising at a predicted section speed.

  • Eleven wrasse species inhabit the coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea. They are the target of leisure fishing and are considered good eating. We investigated the distribution of standard length (SL) by sex of wrasse in Jeju coastal waters for Halichores poecilopterus, H. tenuispinis, Pseudolabrus japonicus, and Pteragogus flagellifera. A cross-section of the ovary showed the ovarian cavity and ovarian lamellae containing oocytes. A cross-section of the testis showed many lobules containing spermatogonia and spermatocytes. A cross-section of a gonad undergoing sex reversal showed the regression or reduction of oocytes and some spermatocytes located in the ovarian lamellae. A cross-section of a sex-reversed testis showed the primary structure of the ovary, with spermatocytes distributed in the epithelium of the lamellae, and reformed seminiferous ducts in the basement lamellae.   • In this paper, isolated words are recognized using multisection VQ and HMM. As recognition vocabuaries, 20 area-name which is uttered 5 times by 3 speakers is selected. In generating codebook, we devide recognition vocabulary into equal length, section, and make standard VQ codebook to each section and calculate observation by section and than recognize isolated words by HMM training. Multisection VQ codebook has time information and as observation is calculated by eacy section, computation is lesser and recongnition rate is higher than by whole codword. As a result, it is proved that recognition rate is higher in case of HMM using multisection VQ codebook.

Geometry-dependent MITC method for a 2-node iso-beam element

  • In this paper, we present an idea of the geometry-dependent MITC method. The simple concept is exemplified to improve a 2-node iso-beam (isoparametric beam) finite element of varying section. We first study the behavior of a standard 2-node iso-beam finite element of prismatic section, which has been widely used with reduced integration (or the equivalent MITC method) in order to avoid shear locking. Based on analytical studies on cantilever beams of varying section, we propose the axial strain correction (ASC) scheme and the geometry-dependent tying (GDT) scheme for the 2-node iso-beam element. We numerically analyze varying section beam problems and present the improved performance by using both ASC and GDT schemes.

  • A damped Timoshenko beam element is introduced for the DOF-efficient forced vibration analysis of beam-like structures coated with viscoelastic damping layers. The rotary inertia as well as the shear deformation is considered, and the damping effect of viscoelastic layers is modeled as an imaginary loss factor in the complex shear modulus. A complex composite cross-section of structures is replaced with a homogeneous one by means of the transformed section approach in order to construct an equivalent single-layer finite element model capable of employing the standard $C^{0}$-continuity basis functions. The numerical reliability and the DOF-efficiency are explored through the comparative numerical experiments.

  • The Standard penetration test determines the type of soil according to soil bearing capacity, and this classifies the subsoil into many layers. Construction project managers are willing to know the depth of the present types of subsoil on site in order to make plans on earthwork stage during excavation. However the standard penetration test may not provide accurate information on subsoil type due to incorrect spacing. To solve this problem, this study propose a conceptual algorithm for determining the spacing of standard penetration test spots to essentially tests relevant locations on which to be applied the standard penetration test. This provides the acquirement of the accurate layered model volume of earthwork revised into geological columnar section. This algorithm will determine the appropriate standard penetration test spots spacing on a given size of site to optimize the accuracy of the earthwork volume, time and cost.

  • In this paper, we analyze the effects of interference canceller on the performance of multitone DS/CDMA system proposed by Vandendorpe[5]. There are various kinds of interference canceller suggested by different researchers including parallel and successive cancellers and we adopt a canceller used by Yoon et al.[9] which is a kind of parallel canceller. We consider three kinds of interferences, that is, multipath interference(MPI), interchannel interference(ICI) and multiple access interference(MAI). The ICI is the interference between multitones. The equations for variances. are derived for the inteferences and thermal noise used for signal to noise ratio calculation. We also consider RAKE reception over multipath channel which is modeled as lowpass equivalent linear filter and three stage interference canceller used for performance improvement. We show the performance results for number of canceller stage, diversity order and number of users and draw some conclusions that interference canceller is effective in multitone DS/CDMA system and the performance is further improved with the higher order of diversity and larger number of PN chips.
