In order to evaluate variation of fatigue life of mechanical components including engineering plastics, it is important to estimate probabilistic strain-life curves to accurately define the variation of fatigue characteristics. This paper intends to provide new assessment of P-$\varepsilon$-N (probabilistic strain-life curves) for considering the variation of fatigue characteristics in polyacetal. The fatigue strain controlled tests were conducted under constant 50% humidity and room temperature condition by a universal testing machine at strain ratio, R=0. A practical procedure is introduced to evaluate probabilistic strain-life curves. Three probabilistic distributions were used for generating P-$\varepsilon$-N curves such as normal, 2-parameter and 3-parameter Weibull. In this study, 3-parameter Weibull distribution was found to be most appropriate among assumed distributions when the probability distributions of the fatigue characteristic were examined using chi-square and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The more appropriate P-$\varepsilon$-N curves for these materials are generated by the proposed method considering 3-parameter Weibull distribution.
Purpose of this study is to find out proper means of estimating the urinary mercury excretion in the normal individuals. Whole void volume was collected every 2 hours beginning from 6 o'clock in the morning until 6 o'clock next morning. Mercury excretion in each urine specimen was measured by NIOSH recommended dithizone colorimetric method (Method No.: P & CAM 145). Urinary concentration of mercury was adjusted by two means: specific gravity of 1.024 and a gram of creatinine excretion per liter of urine comparing the data with the unadjusted ones. Mercury excretion in 24-hour urine specimen was calculated by adding the amounts measured with the hourly collected specimens of each individual. Statistical analysis of the urinary mercury excretion revealed the following results: 1. Frequency distribution curve of mercury excreted in urine of hourly specimens was best fitted to power function expressed in the form of $y=ax^b$. Adjustment of the urinary mercury concentration by creatinine excretion was shown to be superior($y=1674x^{-1.52},\;r^2=0.95$) over nonadjustment($y=2702x^{-1.57},\;r^2=0.92$) and adjustment by specific gravity of 1.024($y=4535x^{-1.66},\;r^2=0.93$). 2. Both log-transformed mercury excretion in hourly voided specimens and mercury excretion itself in 24 hour specimens showed the normal distributions. 3. The frequency distribution of mercury adjusting the urinary concentration of mercury by creatinine excretion was best fitted to a theoretical normal distribution with the sample means and standard deviation than those unadjusted or adjusted with specific gravity of 1.024. 4. Average urinary mercury excretions in 24-hour urine specimen in an individual were as follows: a) Unadjusted mercury excretion mean and standard deviation : $$18.6{\pm}13.68{\mu}gHg/l$$. median : $$16.0\;{\mu}gHg/l$$. range : $$0.0-55.10\;{\mu}gHg/l$$. b) Adjusted with specific gravity mean : $$20.7{\pm}11.76\;{\mu}gHg/l{\times}\frac{0.024}{S.G-1.000}$$ median : $$20.7\;{\mu}gHg/l{\times}\frac{0.024}{S.G-1.000}$$ range : $$0.0-52.9\;{\mu}gHg/l{\times}\frac{0.024}{S.G-1.000}$$ c) Adjusted with creatinine excretion mean and standard deviation : $$10.5{\pm}6.98\;{\mu}gHg/g$$ creatinine/l median : $$9.4\;{\mu}gHg/g$$ creatinine/l range : $$0.0-26.7\;{\mu}gHg/g$$ creatinine/l 5. No statistically significant differences were found between means calculated from 24-hour urine specimens and those from hourly specimens transformed into logarithmic values. (P<0.05).
The loads and resistances are random in nature. It Is thus necessary to consider these variabilities for more reasonable and reliable structural analysis. The purpose of the present study is to develop a stochastic finite element program which can analyze plane structures. The model requires only the means, standard deviations and distribution types of the load and resistance varualbes. This model can determine from the analysis the means and standard deviations of nodal displacement for all nodal points. The implemention results show good agreement at 10% significant level with the simulation results, if material properties and load conditions fallow the normal distribution.
Consider a supercritical Bellman-Harris process evolving from one particle. We superimpose on this process the additional structure of movement. A particle whose parent was at x at its time of birth moves until it dies according to a given Markov process X starting at x. The motions of different particles are assumed independent. In this paper we show that when the movement process X is standard Brownian the proportion of particles with position $\leq${{{{ SQRT { t} }}}} b and age$\leq$a tends with probability 1 to A(a)$\Phi$(b) where A(.) and $\Phi$(.) are the stable age distribution and standard normal distribution, respectively. We also extend this result to the case when the movement process is a Levy process.
In this study, we establish bootstrap control limits for EWMA chart by applying the bootstrap method, called resampling, which could not demand assumptions about pre-distribution when the process is skewed and/or the normality assumption is doubt. The results obtained in this study are summarized as follows : bootstrap EWMA control chart is developed for applying bootstrap method to EWMA chart, which is more sensitive to small shifts of process. With the purpose of eliminating a skewness of the resampling distribution, the bootstrap control limits are established by using a modified residual, and its performance is analyzed by ARL. It is shown that the bootstrap EWMA control chart developed in this study includes the properties of standard EWMA control chart that is sensitive to a small shift, and detects process in out of control more quickly than standard EWMA chart.
We propose, a new process capability index $C_{psk}$(WV) applying the weighted variance control charting method for non-normally distributed. The main idea of the weighted variance method(WVM) is to divide a skewed or asymmetric distribution into two normal distributions from its mean to create two new distributions which have the same mean but different standard deviations. In this paper we propose an example, a distributions generated from the Johnson family of distributions, to demonstrate how the weighted variance-based process capability indices perform in comparison with another two non-normal methods, namely the Clements and the Wright methods. This example shows that the weighted valiance-based indices are more consistent than the other two methods in terms of sensitivity to departure to the process mean/median from the target value for non-normal processes. Second method show using the percentage nonconforming by the Pearson, Johnson and Burr systems. This example shows a little difference between the Pearson system and Burr system, but Johnson system underestimated than the two systems for process capability.
This paper has analyzed the structure, applicable regulations and the resistance characteristics of insulation ring type of CSST (Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing for Gas). With the flammability test conducted in accordance with KS C IEC 60811-1-1, the evaluation of insulation resistance, temperature characteristics, and reliability has been conducted. An insulation ring type CSST consists of protective coating, tube, nut, insulation ring, packing, socket, and ball valve. Connecting an insulation ring type CSST to gas tubings for gas appliance is not permitted, moreover, the product shall be installed inside a sleeve pipe in case of buried installation such as the ceiling. Damages on protective coating and tube were detected when fire was applied to the test sample with a portable torch for 60 seconds. The insulation resistance of a normal product was $49.59M{\Omega}$, while that of the product completed the flammability test reduced to $9.21M{\Omega}$. The mean insulation resistance within the confidence Interval of 95% using the mini tap program 17 was $49.59M{\Omega}$ and the mean insulation resistance within the confidence interval reduced to $9.21M{\Omega}$. In the normal distribution analysis of 95% confidence interval, the value-P of the normal product was stable at 0.075 and AD(Anderson-Darling) statistic value was turned out to be 0.063, which is very normal, and the standard deviation was analyzed as 0.2586. The value P of the product completed the flammability test resulted in 0.005, the AD was 1.355 and the standard deviation reduced to 0.07908.
In this study, the ${\AA}$ngstrom exponent for polydispersed aerosol during dynamic processes was investigated. Log-normal aerosol size distribution was assumed, and a sensitivity analysis of the ${\AA}$ngstrom exponent with regards the coagulation and condensation process was performed. The ${\AA}$ngstrom exponent is expected to decrease because of the particle growth due to coagulation and condensation. However, it is difficult to quantify the degree of change. In order to understand quantitatively the change in the ${\AA}$ngstrom exponent during coagulation and condensation, different real and imaginary parts of the refractive index were considered. The results show that the ${\AA}$ngstrom exponent is sensitive to changes in size distribution and refractive index. The total number concentration decreases and the geometric mean diameter of aerosols increase during coagulation. On the while, the geometric standard deviation approaches monodispersed size distribution during the condensation process, and this change in size distribution affects the ${\AA}$ngstrom exponent. The degree of change in the ${\AA}$ngstrom exponent depends on the refractive index and initial size distribution, and the size parameter changes with the ${\AA}$ngstrom exponent for a given refractive index or chemical composition; this indicates that the size distribution plays an important role in determining the ${\AA}$ngstrom exponent as well as the chemical composition. Subsequently, this study shows how the ${\AA}$ngstrom exponent changes quantitatively during the aerosol dynamics processes for a log-normal aerosol size distribution for different refractive indices; the results showed good agreement with the results for simple analytic size distribution solutions.
Objectives: According to the central limit theorem, the samples in population might be considered to follow normal distribution if a large number of samples are available. Once we assume that toxicity dataset follow normal distribution, we can treat and process data statistically to calculate genus or species mean value with standard deviation. However, little is known and only limited studies are conducted to investigate whether toxicity dataset follows normal distribution or not. Therefore, the purpose of study is to evaluate the generally accepted normality hypothesis of aquatic toxicity dataset Methods: We selected the 8 chemicals, which consist of 4 organic and 4 inorganic chemical compounds considering data availability for the development of species sensitivity distribution. Toxicity data were collected at the US EPA ECOTOX Knowledgebase by simple search with target chemicals. Toxicity data were re-arranged to a proper format based on the endpoint and test duration, where we conducted normality test according to the Shapiro-Wilk test. Also we investigated the degree of normality by simple log transformation of toxicity data Results: Despite of the central limit theorem, only one large dataset (n>25) follow normal distribution out of 25 large dataset. By log transforming, more 7 large dataset show normality. As a result of normality test on small dataset (n<25), log transformation of toxicity value generally increases normality. Both organic and inorganic chemicals show normality growth for 26 species and 30 species, respectively. Those 56 species shows normality growth by log transformation in the taxonomic groups such as amphibian (1), crustacean (21), fish (22), insect (5), rotifer (2), and worm (5). In contrast, mollusca shows normality decrease at 1 species out of 23 that originally show normality. Conclusions: The normality of large toxicity dataset was not always satisfactory to the central limit theorem. Normality of those data could be improved through log transformation. Therefore, care should be taken when using toxicity data to induce, for example, mean value for risk assessment.

Gene classification can involve complex order-restricted inference. Examining gene expression pattern across groups with order-restriction makes standard statistical inference ineffective and thus, requires different methods. For this problem, Roy's union-intersection principle has some merit. The M-estimator adjusting for outlier arrays in a microarray study produces a robust test statistic with distribution-insensitive clustering of genes. The M-estimator in conjunction with a union-intersection principle provides a nonstandard robust procedure. By exact permutation distribution theory, a conditionally distribution-free test based on the proposed test statistic generates corresponding p-values in a small sample size setup. We apply a false discovery rate (FDR) as a multiple testing procedure to p-values in simulated data and real microarray data. FDR procedure for proposed test statistics controls the FDR at all levels of ${\alpha}$ and ${\pi}_0$ (the proportion of true null); however, the FDR procedure for test statistics based upon normal theory (ANOVA) fails to control FDR.
