  • Reduced-scale experimental study was carried out on the heat flow behavior which flows under the sloped ceiling in underground fire. Temperature and flow velocity were measured to characterize the ceiling jet along the sloped stairway ceiling. The methanol fuel was used as a model fire source giving 2.2 and 3.4 kW, with changing the slope angle of stairway adopting of 15, 25, 35, and 45 deg. Based on the experimental data, excess temperature and velocity along the sloped stairway ceiling were examined which are usefully applicable to estimate the activating conditions of heat detector and sprinkler head mounted on the sloped ceiling. Excess temperature in upper exit of the sloped stairway was also examined to analyze the soffit which delays the smoke diffusion. The result shows that the activating conditions of heat detector and sprinkler in the sloped stairway ceiling have to be considered differently in a point of about 30 deg.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of heel off stairway walking exercise on the increase of muscle activity and balance activity of the ankle joint muscles in university students with functional ankle instability. The conservative treatment for the control group consisted of stairway walking (n=10) and the experimental group consisted of heel off stairway walking (n=11). The therapeutic intervention of the control and experimental groups was performed a total of 12 exercise sessions, 3 times per week for 4 weeks. To compare the two groups, the level of ankle disability was assessed by using the EMG, BT4 and Pedoscan in pre-treatment and post-treatment. Muscle activity increased in both the experimental groups and control groups in each group, however there was no significant difference between the groups. Balance ability did not show any significant difference. This study demonstrates that heel-off stairway walking is effective in significantly increasing muscle activity, however did not significantly improve balance ability.

  • In this study, the construction trend of skyscraper was summarized chirologically to examine the characteristics and current, and the issue in evacuation was examined through the case of fire breakout in skyscraper. Based on this, the type of evacuation using the emergency stairway during the fire breakout in skyscraper was decided on six types and empirical experiment was conducted for each type. The issues on the participants that participated in the emergency stairway evacuation experiment from the fire breakout in skyscraper and the difficulties in the evacuation were qualitatively evaluated to summarize each element of hindrance to summarize basic information on emergency stairway evacuation.

  • A passenger ship has some differences compared with a general commercial ship from the viewpoint of the structural arrangement. It is difficult to reinforce wide panels and local structures of a passenger ship because of its interior design when they have vibration problems. Moreover, the allowable vibratory limit for a passenger ship is much lower than that of a commercial ship. In this study, it is introduced that the procedure of the vibration analysis and the structural improvement for prevention of vibration with consideration of interior design for the Atrium stairway, one of the local structure installed in public space.

  • In this study, we confirmed the fact that air egress velocity of pressure differential system which is installed in vestibule of smokeproof stairway in domestic high-rise building becomes back-flow into the vestibule not into the livingroom when the doors open to escape in case of fire by actual measurement. It concerned that fire smoke inflow into the vestibule of smokeproof stairway. so, reflux symptoms were developing the condition does not occur by creating an area of $2m^2$ and a model. if it‘s area is less, airflow in upper area was severely reflux. in the case upward 45 gradient of supply damper’s angle of blade, The results that reflux symptoms include upper door but bottom has some reflux. also vestibule of smokeproof stairway‘s area of $4m^2$ in the living room door in the direction of the flow distributon was normal. if a vestibule of smokeproof stairway is smaller, it designed to be performance-based design should be.

  • Maximum pressure difference in central core type 80th super_tall buildings was estimated as 75 Pa during no outside wind due to the winter stack effect. Maximum pressure difference of 225 Pa can be obtained depending on the location of air injection fan during the stairway pressurization at fire. Bottom_only air injection system provided the best results in the sense of required air flow rates and pressure distributions. Top_only air supply system was estimated as the worst for this country. It revealed that the decrease of the temperature in the stairway due to the cold outside air injection reduced the required flow rates of the fan and significantly changed the distribution of pressure differences.

  • Since subway fire disaster at Daegu, Korea smoke control system and passengers evacuation distance has been focused to reform. Existing smoke control facilities need to expand volume of ventilation capacity however, the complicate subway station structure can hardly react dispersion of smokes from massive subway cabin fire. Smoke flow at platform level move upward thought vertical stairway and passengers evacuation goes with same direction. The victims of evacuees from subway station fire mainly due to exposure of heat radiation and smoke. The study demonstration the effect of downward evacuates stairway system by separating evacuation route to smoke movement pass way including saving times of evacuation.

  • 1D-numerical analysis of the network algorithm with the orifice equation for the relationship between pressure difference and flowrate has been mostly used to analyse leakage flow at the gap. In this study, a 3D-numerical method applying momentum loss model to the gap region in the computational domain is represented to reflect effectively the effect of leakage flow by determining the proportion of pressure difference to air passage velocity. While the 3D-numerical method is verified through the computation of the two compartments model, the numerical analysis of the stack effect in a building stairway is performed. As the temperature of air outside drops, the pressure in the upper stairway and leakage flowrate through the gap in the door rise. The change of gap area does not have an effect on pressure in the stairway for the analysis conditions.

  • The use of Precast Concrete (PC) stairways is increasing to replace existing Reinforced Concrete (RC) stairways for the faster construction and the better quality control. Among several already developed PC stairway construction methods, RC Core Sequential Construction Method by Using PC Stairways (COSEC) has advantages of 1) allowing core of a building to be built prior to PC stairways so that two different procedures will not interfere with each other, and 2) having a newly developed joint connection with the core so that the RC core and PC stairways can be easily put together. In this paper, cases of several construction sites with the PC stairways method are analyzed. The elements of the developed method are described for further application and improvement.
