Commerical purity aluminium , copper and STS 304 stainless steel sheets are welded by ultrasonic welding. The microstructures, x-ray diffraction profiles of planes , pole figures of the surface of original metal sheets are compared with those of the weld interface. The microstructures show disturbance and dark areas in the weld interface and grain refinement in the vicinity of the interface. The x-ray diffraction intensity of each plane in weld interface decreased in all metal sheets with exception of 9200) in steel sheet. The microstructure and x-ray diffraction intensity is affected by the mixture of deformation, heating and vibratin duringthe ultrasonic welding. Therefore, after the ultrasonic welding, the positions of the peak intensity in the pole figures are changed, the value of the maximum pole intensity is decreased in Al, is increased in copper and stainless steel. Very strong {100} <001> texture, strong {100} <001>,{123}<634> textures in original Al surface are transformed into weak, {100}<001>, {110}<112> and {112}<111> components in weld surface, weak (110) fiber is slightly changed to (110) fiber in copper, (100)and ${\gamma}$ fiber components are transformed into strong ${\gamma}$ fiber component in stainless steel.
Stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance. The drawback is that pitting occurs easily due to the concentration of chloride. In addition, corrosion of socket weld, which is structurally and chemically weaker than the other components of the pipe, occurs rapidly. Since these two phenomena overlap, pinhole leakage occurs frequently in the seawater pipe socket welds made of stainless steel at the power plants. To analyze this specific corrosion, a metallurgical analysis of the stainless steel socket welds, where the actual corrosion occurred during the power plant operation, was performed. The micro-structure and chemical composition of each socket weld were analyzed. In addition, selective corrosion of the specific micro-structure in a mixed dendrite structure comprising γ-austenite (gamma-phase iron) and δ-ferrite (iron at high temperature) was investigated based on the characteristic micro-morphology and chemical composition of the corroded area. Finally, the different corrosion stages and characteristics of socket weld corrosion are summarized.
Superduplex stainless steels are important materials to the oil and gas industry, especially for off-shore production. TIG welding of super duplex stainless steels to obtain the optimal phase balance between austenite and ferrite is mainly achieved by controlling the cooling rate and the weld chemistry. The latter depends on the filler wire chosen and the shielding gas used. If TIG welding of superduplex stainless steels is performed with argon shielding gas only, then nitrogen gets lost from the weld pool, which can result in a ferrite-rich weld metal, with an inferior corrosion resistance than parent metal. In the present study, nitrogen permeation model from the shield gas which gets into the weld metal in DCEN-TIG welding has suggested. This plasma stream model shows characteristics of permeation of nitrogen ions into the molten metal due to the strong physical effect of plasma stream which formed by the arc pressure rather than the permeation of nitrogen ions caused by electric effect.
A specimen of weld metal was prepared by GTA welding with weld wire of super duplex stainless steel. Aging treatment was conducted for the sample at the temperature range of 700 to $900^{\circ}C$ for 5 to 300 minutes. The effect of volume fraction of ${\sigma}$-phase to intergranular corrosion of weld metal has been investigated and the results were derived as follows. The volume fraction of ${\sigma}$ phase tends to increase with an increase of aging temperature and time and intergranular corrosion of weld metal was increased by an increase of ${\sigma}$ phase. Degree of sensitization representing intergranular corrosion was found to tend to increase with an increase of aging time at 700 to $800^{\circ}C$, while it decreased by an increase of aging time at $900^{\circ}C$.

The spot weldability of dissimilar metal joints between austenitic stainless steels (STS316)/IF steels and ferritic stainless steels (STS430)/IF steels was investigated. This study was aimed to determine the spot welding parameters for a dissimilar metal joint and to evaluate the dissimilar metal joint's weldability, including its welding nugget shape, tensile-shear strength, hardness, and microstructure. The comparison of these results was described in terms of fracture behavior. Compared with the weld lobe of similar metal joints, dissimilar metal joints (STS430/IF) had reduced weld current range. However, the weld lobe of STS316/IF steel joint showed increased weld current range. This is because the dilution of chemical composition in the molten weld pool suppressed the heat input being caused by Joule heat with current flow through the samples. The microstructure of the fusion zone was fully martensite and mixture of ferrite and martensite for austenitic stainless steel/IF steel and ferritic stainless steel/IF steel combination, respectively. The experimental results showed that the shape of nugget was asymmetric, in which the fusion zone of the austenitic and ferritic stainless steel sheet was larger due to the higher bulk-resistance. The predicted microstructure by using the Schaeffler diagram was well matched with experimental results. After peel test, the fracture was initiated from heat affected zone of ferritic stainless steel sheet side, however the final fracture was propagated into the IF steel sheet side due to its lower strength.
Effects of gravitational orientation on gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) for 304 stainless steel were studied to determine the critical factors for weld pool formation, such as weld surface deformation and weld pool shape. This study was accomplished through an analytical study of weld pool stability as a function of primary welding parameters (arc current and arc holding time), material properties (surface tension and density), and melting efficiency (cross-sectional area). The stability of weld pool shape and weld surface deformation was confirmed experimentally by changing the welding position. The arc current and translational velocity were the major factors in determining the weld pool stability as a function of the gravitational orientation. A 200A spot GTAW showed a significant variation of the weld pool formation as the arc held longer than 3 seconds, however the weld pool shape and surface morphology for a 165A spot GTAW were 'stable', i.e., constant regardless of the gravitational orientation. The cross-sectional area of the weld (CSA) was one of the critical factors in determining the weld pool stability. The measured CSA ($13.5mm^2$) for the 200A spot GTAW showed a good agreement with the calculated CSA ($14.9mm^2$).

This study examined the influence of post weld heat treatment (PWHT) conditions on corrosion behaviors of laser-welded super duplex stainless steel tube. Due to the high cooling rate of laser welding, the phase fraction of ferrite and austenite in the weld metal became unbalanced significantly. In addition, the Cr2N particles were precipitated adjacent to the fusion line, which can be susceptible to the localized corrosion. On the other hand, the phase fraction in the weld metal was restored at a ratio of 5:5 when exposed to temperatures above 1060 ℃ during the post weld heat treatment. Nevertheless, the high beltline speed during the PWHT, leading to the insufficient cooling rate, caused a precipitation of σ phase at the interface between ferrite/austenite in both weld metal and base metal. This resulted in the severe corrosion damages and significant decrease in critical pitting temperature (CPT), which was even lower than that measured in as-welded condition. Moreover, the fraction of σ phase in the center region of post weld heat treated steel tube was obtained to be higher than in the surface region. These results suggest that the PWHT conditions for the steel tube should be optimized to ensure the high corrosion resistance by excluding the precipitation of σ phase even in center region.
In this study, effects of solidification modes (primary $\delta$-ferrite, primary ${\gamma}$-austenite) on the pit initiation and propagation in the 304L and 316L austenitic stainless steel weld metals were investigated. The solidification mode of weld metal was controlled by the addition of nitrogen to Ar shielding gas. Through the electrochemical experiments (potentiodynamic anodic polarization and potentiostatic time-current transient test) and metallographic examination (microstructure and elemental distribution), the following results were obtained. The more the volume content of nitrogen in the shielding gas were, the lower critical current density for passivity was observed. In comparison with weldments solidified through the primary $\delta$-ferrite solidification mode and the primary ${\gamma}$-solidification mode, the former showed higher critical pitting potential and a longer incubation time for stable pit initiation than the latter. However, in the pit propagation stage the former exhibited a faster dissolution rate than the latter. These results were believed to ee related to the distribution of alloying elements such as Cr, Mo, Ni and S.
Many researches on the application of stainless steels as structural steels have been performed thanks to their material properties such as superior ductility and corrosion resistance. Ferritic stainless steels(STS430) with little or no nickel have been used increasingly in building structure because it is inexpensive compared to austenitic stainless steels(STS304) with nickel, but provide performances similar to the austenitic stainless steel. This paper deals with block shear fracture behavior of base metal in stainless steel welded connection. Although the block shear fracture behavior for welded connection due to stress triaxiality is different from that of bolted connection, the block shear strength of welded connection in current design specifications has been predicted based on that of bolted connection. The main parameters are weld length and welding process(Arc and TIG welds). The ultimate strengths of TIG welded specimens were higher than those of arc welded specimens and current design predictions by AISC, EC3 etc. were compared with test strengths.
In order to establish the optimum hot forming temperature and solution heat treatment temperature for 25% chromium super duplex stainless steel weld, a commercial 25%Cr-10%Ni-4%Mo weld metal for super duplex stainless steel(UNS S32750) with different solution heat treatment conditions at $1100^{\circ}C,\;1050^{\circ}C,\;1025^{\circ}C\;and\;1000^{\circ}C$ for 1.5 hours has been investigated by means of optical metallography, and estimated mechanical properties. It is found that exposure to elevated temperatures at $1050^{\circ}C,\;1025^{\circ}C\;and\;1000^{\circ}C$ except $1100^{\circ}C$ brings partial decomposition of ferrite to austenite and sigma phase, which deteriorates their properties and heat treatment at $1100^{\circ}C$ shows acceptable mechanical properties.
