  • In a shipyard, computer calculation is not frequently used for the grain stability calculation because of large difference between calculation values and real values. Therefore, the necessary calculation process for grain stability is done manually. GUI(Graphical User Interface) is adopted for the convenience of users and interactive data I/O. The hold shape (girder, hold, etc.)needed for calculation are visualized using GLBAX which is a 3 dimensional graphic library. The interface with the ship basic calculation package is also implemented. The aim of this paper is to develop a reliable interactive grain stability calculation program which reduces computational time, and is to computerize the grain stability calculation procedure.

  • Deep-sea fishing vessel No. 501 Oryong was fully flooded through the openings and was sunk down to the bottom of sea due to the very rough sea weather on the way of evasion after fishing operation in the Bearing Sea with many crews dead and/or missed. In this study, calculation of ship stability was carried out using KST-SHIP(ship calculation system of KST), considering the effect of flow fluid and fish catch arrangement according to the progress of its sinking accident, and damage stability was analyzed. For this study, intact stability calculation of its accident ship under the full load departure condition and its calculation result were verified by comparing with each other, and intact stability according to displacement from the departure of accident ship just before the accident was calculated and analyzed. Damage stability was calculated according to the progress during sinking accident and also analyzed.

  • In this calculation of statical stability of a ship, mechanical integrator was used most popularly and the direct calculation method such as a Barn's wedge method was also adopted in some cases. Both of the above method was developed for manual calculation which include mechanical integration or drafting procedure on body plan. Therefore, the computerization of stability calculation by the above method is very difficult. In this paper a simplified method for stability calculation is suggested, with based on hydrostatic data and immerged wedged characteristics.

  • Stability criterion and its calculation are the crucial issue in the application of sail-assisted ship. However, there is at present no specific criterion and computational methods for the stability of sail-assisted ship. Based on the stability requirements for seagoing ships, the stability criterion of the sail-assisted ships is suggested in this paper. Furthermore, how to calculate the parameters and determine some specific coefficients for the ship stability calculation, as well as how to redraw stability curve are also discussed in this paper. Finally, to give an illustration, the proposed method is applied on a sail assisted-ship model with comments and recommendations for improvement.

  • Damage stability is generally very important as a part of rescue technique of damaged ship and also in connection with the requirements of MARPOL73/78[2]. Damage stability calculation program has been developed and suggest, which can be used on an onboard computer for any operating drafts. The program is based on lost buoyancy method for calculation of final drafts, and also based on added mass method for calculation of residual righting arm. The numerical method suggested by Hamamoto-Kim[6] is adopted for calculation of intact righting arm(GZ). The model experiments on damage stability are also carried out in a small tank with tanker model 2.385 meters long. The experimental results are compared with the calculations by the suggested method.

  • Available transfer capability(ATC) quantifies the viable increase in real power transfer from one point to another in a power system. ATC calculation has predominantly focussed on steady-state viability. But ATC assessment with transient stability constraints has a dominant part in overall ATC calculation. ATC assessment requires a reputation of (n-1) security assessment with constraints of thermal limits, voltage stability and dynamic stability. An estimation of determinant contingency screening method is used for computing eigenvalue of Jacobian matrix. This paper proposed a methods to ATC calculation using energy function. Constraints is used thermal limits, voltage stability and transient stability.

  • As per the expanding needs of marine exploitation, many floating structures have been built. Among these, box-type vessel is considered as the most basic shape, to which plant barges and crane barges belong. Stability problem is very important for vessel. In order to increase transverse stability, this paper employs bulwarks along the upper deck sides of box-type vessels and the emphasis is laid upon the effect of bulwarks on transverse stability. In the present paper, the calculation method of heeling moment acting to the ship due to hydrostatic pressure is suggested, and actual procedures of the calculation for box-type vessels with bulwarks are shown. Furthermore corresponding model tests are carried out in small water tank. Through the comparison between calculated and measured values, it is confirmed that the preset calculation method is useful. And employing bulwarks on box-type vessels is very effective for increase of transverse stability at the heeling angles from about 15 degrees to about degrees.

  • Deep-sea fishing vessel No. 501 Oryong was fully flooded through its openings and sank to the bottom of the Bering Sea. The tragic accident was attributed to rough sea weather after a fishing operation in the Bering Sea, and led to the death or loss of many crewmen. In this study, the ship stability calculation was carried out using KST-SHIP (ship calculation system of KST), considering the free surface effect and fish catch arrangement according to the progress of its sinking accident, and stability after flooding was analyzed. The calculation results obtained using KST-SHIP were verified by comparing them to intact stability calculation sheet of the accident ship under the full load departure condition, and intact stability according to displacement from the departure of accident ship up to the moment of the accident was calculated and analyzed. The stability after flooding was also calculated and analyzed according to the progress during its sinking accident.

  • In recent years, electric power systems have been experiencing a rapid change due to the increasing electricity market. For the effective use of power system under the deregulated environment, it is important to make a fast and accurate calculation of the maximum available transfer capability (ATC) from a supply point to a demand point. In this paper, the purpose of this research is to calculate ATC fast and accurately for securing the stability of system and raising the efficiency as a result of anticipating transmission congestion according to transmission open access progressed in the future under the regulated environment of electricity market. In this paper, a study utilized a relation of the potential energy and energy function by which calculated CCT and then utilized a relation of PEBS for transient stability ATC calculation. In this paper, ATC was calculated as RPF and Energy Function method and calculation results of each method was compared. Contingence ranking method decided the weak bus by the Eigenvalues of Jacobian matrix and overloading branches by PI-index. As a result, a study proved the fast and accurate ATC calculation method considering transient stability suggested in this paper. Through the case study using New England 39 bus system, it is confirmed that the proposed method can be used for real time operation and the planning of electric market.

  • When a ship is travelling in following seas, the encounter frequency is reduced to be very low. n that case surf-riding, broaching-to and capsizing phenomena are most likely to occur. In the present paper, the emphasis is laid upon the transverse stability of ships in following seas, which is related to capsizing phenomenon. The authors intend to clarify the mechanism of the stability variation in following seas. In order to predict that variation, the theoretical calculation method and computer programming are developed. The theoretical calculation is based on Froude-Krylov Hypothesis and static equilibrium condition in waves. Through the application of present calculation method to cargo vessel and fishing boat, it is verified that the transverse stability in following seas with crest amidships can be reduced to a half extent in comparison with calm water stability. On the other hand, the present calculation results are compared with existing experimental data.
