  • Force control of robotic mechanisms continues to be a challenging area. Previous implementation have seldom produced satisfactory results, and researchers in the past have experienced significant instability problems associated with their force controllers. In this study, a new stability factor in force control will be pointed out. When a manipulator is constrained to an environment(force-controlled), geometric instability due to the relationship between the manipulator configuration and the force-controlled direction is shown to be a significant factor in overall system stability. This exploratory study points out a rather intuitive, geometrically based stability factor in terms of an effective system stiffness and analyzes the phenomenon both analytically and graphically. Also, a stiffness control algorithm using the kinematic redundancy of a kinematically redundant manipulator is proposed to improve the overall stability in force control.

  • Mobile fish-cage was developed assuming a cage net with an enclosed area, which and estimated the hydrodynamic characteristics of the cage through the model experiment. Flux-shielding plates, installed in the bow were compared with the resistance test carried out by making a hole, bilge keel and stud, and basic block flow rate consisting of the results to a flat surface plate. The experimental results confirmed the improved resistance performance effect of 3~6% in the bilge keel and the stud form. To assess the stability of the fish-cage, evaluation of the stability in accordance with the stability criteria for determining the floating docks had confirmed that it satisfied the static stability performance under operating conditions at sea.

  • In electric power system, the line stability indices adopted in most of the instances laid stress on variation of reactive power than real power variation of the transmission line. In this paper, a proposal is made with the formulation of a New Voltage Stability Index (NVSI) which originates from the equation of a two bus network, neglecting the resistance of transmission line, resulting in appreciable variations in both real and reactive loading. The efficacy of the index and fuzzy based load flow are validated with IEEE 30 bus and Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) 69 bus system, a practical system in India. The results could prove that the identification of weak bus and critical line in both systems is effectively done. The weak area of the practical system and the contingency ranking with overloading either line or generator outages are found by conducting contingency analysis using NVSI.

  • This article presents an overview of current research activities that center on colloidal crystals resulting from self-assembly of surface-charged nanoparticles. It is organized into three parts: the first part discusses characterization of colloidal structures, the second part describes colloidal stability from the rheological aspects of colloidal crystals suspended in medium, and the third part highlights polymerized colloidal crystals as a promising application. Finally, we briefly discuss the directions of future research in this area.

  • This study were performed to investigated the behavior of excessive pore water pressure with embankment of soft clay. The dissipation behavior of excessive pore water pressure in the improved and non-improved area was used to compare and alyze with lateral displacement , and to investigated the applicability of the methods for stability evaluatio of soft clay. The behavior of excess pore water pressure could be used to the fundamental data for stability evaluation, and the evaluation of the stability of embankment was recommended to use the indlination of curve rather than critical line.

  • In this study, the beeswax extraction methods using organic solvents were examined to develop a optimal dewaxing technology for beeswax-treated Hanji. Thermally-aged beeswax-treated Hanji was dewaxed using four types of extraction methods including dipping, Soxhlet extraction, ultrasonic washing and shaking methods. Then, the aging stability of the dewaxed Hanji was evaluated in terms of variations in paper strength and in the color of the printed area with muk. The experimental results suggested that the dewaxing methods allowing solvent to flow during extraction showed superior extraction efficiency. The dipping method in which the organic solvent does not flow showed the slowest extraction rate of beeswax compared to three other methods. In terms of variations in tensile strength and folding endurance, however, no obvious differences in the aging stability were observed amongst these four extraction methods. Regarding the aging stability in terms of the color of the printed area with muk, Soxhlet extraction method showed the best performance of dewaxing.

  • In this study, the effects of atmospheric stability and surface temperature on the microscale local airflow are investigated in a hydrological suburban area using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. The model domain includes the river and industrial complex for analyzing the effect of water system and topography on local airflow. The surface boundary condition is constructed using a geographic information system (GIS) data in order to more accurately build topography and buildings. In the control experiment, it is shown that the topography and buildings mainly determine the microscale airflow (wind speed and wind direction). The sensitivity experiments of atmospheric stability (neutral, stable, and unstable conditions) represent the slight changes in wind speed with the increase in vertical temperature gradient. The differential heating of ground and water surfaces influences on the local meteorological factors such as air temperature, heat flow, and airflow. These results consequentially suggest that the meteorological impact assessment is accompanied by the changes of background land and atmospheric conditions. It is also demonstrated that the numerical experiments with very high spatial resolution can be useful for understanding microscale local meteorology.

  • The vertical lathe is a very popular machine tool in modem manufacturing industries because of its small area of installation. The small installation area is highly desirable for the flexibility improvement of the manufacturing systems such as FMS, CIM, and IMS. The vertical lathe, however, has much taller height compared to the traditional horizontal lathe, and consequently more severe vibrations. In this study, the structure of a vertical lathe is analyzed to investigate the dynamic properties and further to establish some ideas of the design alteration for the improved dynamic stability even at the higher operating speed. The simulation model is implemented to apply those design alterations for the optimization. The result of this study is not only prosperous but also ready to be applied to the optimum design of various machine tool structures for the improved stability.

  • According to the recent global warming, it is necessary to use energy efficiently together with eco-friendly energy. The development of alternative technologies is requisite for managing the current energy and climate crises. In this regard, "smart windows," which can control solar radiation, can be used to mitigate energy demands. Electrochromic devices (ECDs) effectively control the amount of solar energy reaching commercial and other living areas and maintain climate conditions via color modulation in response to small external stimuli, such as temperature and light irradiation. However, the performance and the stability of ECDs depend on the state of the electrolyte and sealing of the device. To resolve the aforementioned issues, an ECD was manufactured by using a poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-based gel polymer electrolyte (GPE), and a laminating method was used to adequately seal the ECD. The concentrations of PMMA, acetonitrile (ACN), and ferrocene (Fc) were controlled to optimize the composition of the GPE to achieve an enhanced electrochromic performance. The fabricated GPE-based ECD afforded high optical contrast (~81.92%), with high electrochromic stability up to 10,000 cycles. Moreover, the lamination method employing the GPE could be used to fabricate large-area ECDs.

  • Target detection (TD) is a research hotspot in the field of hyperspectral imaging (HSI). Traditional TD methods often mine targets from HSIs under a single imaging condition, without considering the influence of imaging conditions. In fact, the spectra of ground objects in HSIs are uncertain and affected by the imaging conditions (weather, atmospheric, light, time, and other angle conditions including zenith angle). Hyperspectral data changes under different imaging conditions. Therefore, the detection result for a single imaging condition cannot accurately reflect the effectiveness of the detection method used. It is necessary to analyze the performance of various detection methods under different imaging conditions, to find a more applicable detection method. In this paper, we study the performance of TD methods under various land-based imaging conditions. We first summarize classical TD methods and evaluation methods. Then, the detection effects under various imaging conditions are analyzed. Finally, the concepts of the stability coefficient (SC) and effective area under the curve (EAUC) are proposed to comprehensively evaluate the applicability of detection methods under land-based imaging conditions, in terms of both detection accuracy and stability. This is conducive to our selection of detection methods with better applicability in land-based contexts, to improve detection accuracy and stability.
