  • The utilizations of ceramics in the modern industries are increasing due to the desirable combinations of electrical, mechanical and physical properties found in ceramics. Ceramic materials are brittle, hard, strong in compression, weak in shearing and tension which is prone to affect the defects such as scratch, crack and breakage during the machining. Generally, the defects of the ceramic machining are generated from the structural vibrations of the machine. In this study, the dynamic characteristics of a machining center for ceramic machining were investigated to analyze the structural vibrations for the improved stability. Frequency response test and computer simulation have been conducted for the analysis and the design improvement. The improved design is suggested to suppress vibrations for the higher stability of the machine and further to reduce vibrations. And the result shows that simple design alterations without any change of major parts of the machine can reduce the vibration of the machine effectively.

  • The design of a reliable and failsafe control system requires that sensor failures be detected and identified within acceptable time limit so that system malfunction can be prevented. This paper presents a model-based approach to sensor fault detection with applications to vehicle stability control systems. The effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated through test data-based evaluation. Vehicle test data-based evaluation results show that the proposed fault management scheme can be used for the design of a failsafe VSCs.

  • This paper presents design criteria of an overlapping decentralized controller by investigating the controllability and closed loop stability of the expanded system. To determine the criteria we classify the overlapping decentralized controller into an overlapping expanded controller and a contractible controller. It is shown that conditions of system expansion to design these controllers are differently used. The overlapping expanded controller needs the aggregation conditions due to the importance of a structure of the expanded system. The contractible controller which intends to use in the original space needs the restriction because of stability of the original system.

  • In this paper, by means of Lyapunov second method, the stability of IPD control servo systems is analyzed in the time domain for the first time. Based on the results of the stability analysis, the design rule to select the gain of IPD control is suggested such that the maximum error of output to the nominal system is guaranteed for all uncertainty and load variations. An example of a position control of a brushless dc motor is given to prove the unusefulness of the gain design rule.

  • In this paper, a method for optimal design of PID controller using the immune algorithm(IA) has been proposed to improve the stability of A.C.-D.C. power system. The process of this study is composed of formulation of basic controls on HVDC transmission system, mathematical model preparation for stability analysis, and supplementary signal control by an optimal PID controller using the IA. The dynamic property was verified through computer simulations regarding transient stability.

  • Soil nailing method is widely used in reinforcing slopes and excavating earth. The analysis of nail-reinforced slopes, generally require complicated computer programs. The purpose of this paper is suggest, Soil stability Chart for nailed slopes which are very useful for pre-design, rapidly design, and final check. Three slope types, three nail lengths and three nail angles are selected for the stability analysis by using limit equilibrium method form Bishop and French. From the above results, this study propose the reinforced design charts for examine the necessity of reinforcement can be examined. The suggested stability chart and Taylor's Slope Stability Chart, showed similar safety factors. This Soil Nailing design charts can provide the solutions for necessity of reinforcement, economical of nail's length ratio and installation angle as well.

  • This study was carried out to amlyze and compare the stability of a 50ton container crane according to various wind load design codes. The wind load was evaluated according to 'The Specification of Port Facilities and Equipments / Specification for the design of crane structures (KS A 1627)' and 'Load Criteria of Building Structures' effected by the ministry of construction & transportation And the uplift forces qf a container crane under this wind load were estimated by amlyzing reaction forces at each supporting point and compared each other. From this study, we noticed that the design wind velocity criteria need to be defined specifically when the wind load is evaluated to design a container crane. And we verified the necessity of the estimation of the uplift forces at each supporting point to analyze a structural stability of a container crane and the maximum compressive force in order to consider the stability of the ground foundation of the berth.

  • This paper presents the mechanism to increase lateral stability of a mobile robot using an energy stability margin theory. Previous measure of stability used in a wheeled mobile robot has been based on a static stability margin. However, the static stability margin is independent of the height of the robot and does not provide sufficient measure for the amount of stability when the terrain is not a horizontal plane. In this work, the energy stability margin theory, which is dependent on robot's height is used to develop a 2 dof mechanism to increase lateral stability. This proposed mechanism shifts the center of gravity of the robot to the point where the energy stability margin is maximized and overall stability of the robot equipped with this mechanism will be increased.
