Baker's yeast(Saccharomyces cerevisiae) was used as a biocatalyst for eco-friendly indigo dyeing and the reducing power of yeast according to the alkaline solution type was compared. NaOH solution, lye, and buffer solution were used as alkaline solutions. The reducing power(K/S value, oxidation/reduction potential(ORP), pH) was monitored according to the elapsed time including the initiation of reduction, peak reduction, and the end of reduction. In all alkaline solutions, it was confirmed that yeast can be used reducing agent in indigo reduction dyeing. The pH stability and reducing power of buffer solution was better than that of NaOH alone. Although, pH and ORP stability of the reduction bath in lye were better than that of buffer solution, K/S value in buffer solution was higher compared to lye. The reducing power was different depending on the starting pH of the dye bath, and it was better when starting at pH 10.70 than at pH 11.30. Fastnesses to washing, rubbing, and light were relatively good with above rating 4. There was no significant difference in colorfastness depending on the type of alkaline solutions.
The objective of this study is to prepare a stable delivery systems containing polyethoxylated retinamide(PERA) - derivatives of retinoic acid, effective anti-wrinkle and anti-acne agent. Cubic liquid crystalline phase gel (CLCPG) and cubosomes containing various concentrations of PERA were prepared to investigate the physicochemical properties. Furthermore, stability and transdermal absorption efficacy of the CLCPG containing PERA were investigated in comparison with oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions which are predominantly used as a topical formulation. CLCPG increase the stability of PERA in comparison with O/W emulsion. For tropical application, CLCPG containing PERA shows higher moisturizing effect than that of O/W emulsion. In skin permeation test, CLCPG shows higher PERA deposit on epidermis. With its specific physicochemical property caused by the glyceryl oleate, CLCPG itself could be used for stabilizer of various actives and applied as an effective delivery system for topical application. Cubosome, nano-sized dispersed CLCPG, is also expected to be applied in a various field of industry like food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
The surface of poly(ethylene naphthalate) film applicable to high temerature insulator for convection microwave oven was modified with silicone coating solutions in the presence of silane crosslinking agent. The structure and properties of the PEN films were investigated by using Fourier transform IR spectroscopy, viscometry, microscopy, and tensile tests. The experimental results showed that the coating with silicone enhanced thermal stability up to $200^{\circ}C$, and slightly lowered the tensile strength and elongation of the PEN films. Judging from dimensional stability results the silicone coated PEN films can not be used for higher temperature insulator above $230^{\circ}C$. Serious dimensional contraction of films was obtained during heat treatment at $250^{\circ}C$ even for 1h. However, the surface of those films still have same chemical structure of silicones. Therefore, If we use PEN film prestretched at $230^{\circ}C$ as base one it will be possible to prepare a high temperature insulator up to $230^{\circ}C$. Conclusively, a silicone coated PEN film can be suitable for the application to convection microwave oven door insulator at high temperature up to $230^{\circ}C$.
Electrochemical performance of Li-ion cells with $LiMn_2O_4$ cathodes and graphite anodes with carbonates electrolytes containing quaternary ammonium-based room temperature ionic liquids (ILs) is investigated. Eight different ILs based on tetraalkylammonium, pyrrolidinium or piperidinium cations paired with bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide or tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate anions are examined in combination with dimethyl carbonate as a main solvent and fluoroethylene carbonate as a solid electrolyte interface forming agent. It is shown that cycling properties of the cells are strongly affected by the content of ILs in the electrolyte mixtures and its increase corresponds to lower discharge capacity retention. Since viscosity and conductivity of ILs are of a great importance for the electrolytes formulation, some kind of combined parameter should be used for the assessment of IL applicability and calculated values of Walden products for neat ILs represent one of the possible options. Besides, positive effect of ILs on reduction of flammability and enhancement of thermal stability of electrolytes in contact with charged electrodes have been demonstrated by means of self-extinguishing time test and differential scanning calorimetry respectively.
Chitosan was depolymerized by oxidizing agent, hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) and general properties of resulting low molecular weight chitosan(LMWC) were studied. Effect of amount of $H_2O_2$, ratio of $H_2O_2$/chitosan, and reaction temperature were investigated in preparing LMWC. In addition, the reduction of molecular weight of prepared LMWC were measured after a certain time passage. Pre-swelling treatment of starting chitosan affected uniform and mild reaction of depolymerization and increased the solubility of resulting LMWC. Prepared LMWC (Mw 100,000) showed a decrease in Mw by 25-35%. Prepared LMWC(Mw 60,000-70,000) showed a decrease in Mw by 10-15% after 7 months. Therefore, this depolymerizing process can be concluded desirable in terms of stability. In addition, yellowing of pre-swelling treated chitosan upon time passage was insignificant compared with that of untreated chitosan. Therefore, pre-swelling treatment of chitosan before depolymerization would be beneficial in terms of stability of physical state.
In this work, the blend system of epoxy and PMR-15 polyimide is investigated in terms of the cure behaviors and thermal stabilities. The cure behaviors are studied in DSC measurements and thermal stabilities are also carried out by TGA analysis. DDM (4, 4'-diamino diphenyl methane) is used as curing agent for EP and the content of PMR-15 is varied within 0, 5, 10, 35, and 20 phr to neat EP. As a result, the cure activation energy ($E_a$) is increased at 10 phr of PMR-15, compared with that of neat EP. From the TGA results of EP/PMR-15 blend system, the thermal stabilities based in the initial decomposed temperature (IDT) and integral procedural decomposition temperature (IPDT) are increased with increasing the PMR-15 content. The fracture toughness, measured in the context of critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$) and critical strain energy release rate ($G_{IC}$), shows a similar behavior with $E_a$. This result is probably due to the crosslinking developed by the interactions between intermolecules in the polymer chains.
Amiodarone hydrochloride is an antiarrhythmic agent which has low aqueous solubility and presents bioavailability problem. These properties are a challenge for the pharmaceutical industry. Inclusion of lipophilic compound in the hydrophobic core of micelles, i.e. self-assembled structures based on surfactants in aqueous solution, is one way of increasing the solubility. Intravenous formulation of amiodarone hydrochloride with polysorbate 80 as a detergent and benzyl alcohol as a co-solvent is used in medical practice. This paper aimed to study the effect of polysorbate 80 and benzyl alcohol on the water solubility of amiodarone hydrochloride. Formation of mixed micelles consisting of nonionic surfactant polysorbate 80 and cationic amiodarone with chloride counterion was investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy. Benzyl alcohol was found to decrease the stability of the mixed micelles and lead to crystallization of amiodarone hydrochloride. The greatest amounts of crystals formed at 4℃ for 30 days in the model drug solutions with polysorbate 80 concentrations of 100.1 mg/mL and 97.9 mg/mL. A change of the polysorbate 80 concentration and avoidance the use of benzyl alcohol are recommended to improve the stability of the parenteral dosage form. These results can open new perspectives in the optimization of amiodarone intravenous formulations.
The collapsibility of sodium silicate-bonded sands mixed with the L.D converter slag powder to form a hardener were investigated. Five to six percent sodium silicate on the basis of silica sand and 30-40% L.D converter slag powder on the basis of sodium silicate, were mixed and the compressive strength, surface stability index(SSI), bench time, retained strength of the standard sand specimens were measured. The properties were similar to those of general inorganic bonded self-setting molds. The compressive strength and surface stability index were increased and the retained strength and bench time were decreased with increased amount of the L.D converter slag powder. The retained strength of sodium silicate-bonded self-setting molds with the L.D converter slag powder were decreased than $CO_2$ sand molds. The collapsibility of sodium silicate-bonded self-setting molds with the L.D converter slag powder were superior in comparison with $CO_2$ sand molds. The L.D converter slag powder could be used as hardener and collapse agent for the sodium silicate-bonded self-setting molds.
Purpose: Rice starch is known not to be suitable to Mook. Its gel is not hard and elastic enough and too sticky. This study investigated the effects of agar, carrageenan, and gelatin addition on low amylose rice flour paste and gel properties for making Mook. Methods: Angemi, low amylose rice, and Goamibyeo, intermediate amylose rice, were dry milled. The properties of Mook were determined by texture profile analysis (TPA), cold storage stability, and sensory acceptance. Results: Addition of agar and carrageenan increased cold paste viscosity, whereas addition of gelatin decreased cold paste viscosity while improving breakdown and setback viscosity. When 30% of gelling agents such as agar, carrageenan, and gelatin were added to low amylose rice, Angemi, Mook-like gels were formed. The hardness, adhesiveness, and springiness of gelling reagent-added Angemi Mook increased, whereas cohesiveness decreased, and fracturability was not observed. The addition of gelling agent decreased lightness and increased yellowness. Angemi Mook added with gelatin showed the best freeze-thaw stability while addition of agar and carrageenan increased syneresis. The carrageenan-added Angemi Mook was equal to Goamibyeo 100% Mook in all sensory acceptance properties without significant difference. Conclusion: Above results suggest that addition of carrageenan and gelatin to low amylose rice can be used to produce Mook with improved physical properties.
Ammonium polyphosphate-polyurethane foam composite (APP-PUF) was prepared from poly(adipate)diol/ammonium polyphosphate composite (f = 2), polyether polyol (f = 4.6), and PMDI (f = 2.5). As a blowing agent, $H_2O$ was used at various concentrations. The thermal decomposition behavior, morphology, closed-cell content, and density of APP-PUF were characterized. At the $H_2O$ concentrations lower than 3.5 php, the cell size of pure polyurethane foams (PUF) and APP-PUFs were close each other. As the $H_2O$ concentration became greater than 5.0 php, the cell size of the PUFs greatly increased compared to that of APP-PUFs. Addition of 1.5~1.9 wt% ammonium polyphosphate to the PUFs greatly enhanced the thermal stability of the PUFs, so 50 wt% residual temperature of APP-PUFs increased to $380{\sim}488^{\circ}C$, which were $30{\sim}70^{\circ}C$ higher than those of the PUFs. Thermal stability of the PUFs and APP-PUFs increased with $H_2O$ content and then decreased once $H_2O$ content exceeded 5 php.
