The iron-based Metglas 2605S3A amorphous alloy ribbons are annealed at $435^{\circ}C$ for various periods from 5 to 210 min, and the effect of annealing is investigated on the dc magnetic properties of the ribbon. Typical square-type hysteresis loops are observed for the ribbons annealed fo 5 min, indicative of the nearly complete removal of residual stresses which are produced during melt-quenching. As the annealing time increases, the coercivity increases and the shape of hysteresis loops transforms to round type and finally to sheared one at the longest annealing time of 210 min. These results may be explained by the formation of clusters with chemical shortorder and very fine crystallites (at the annealing time of 210 min), and the diffusion-induced stresses during the formation of the clusters. For the samples annealed for 5 min, very good dc properties of the squareness ratio, coercivity and maximum permeability are observed, but, rather unexpectedly, the initial permeability is found to be very low. These results are considered to be due to a simple domain structure consisting of very small number of $^{\circ}$ domains.
We investigated the soft magnetic properties of nanocrystalline Fe-Al-O film as etching the oxide film with ion beam etching method. It is thought that the grain size of Fe-Al-O film increases as the thickness decreases. The coercivity and squareness increase with decreasing thickness. The surface curvature of Am images increases when the etching experiment proceeds. This phenomena could be due to the grain growth which occurs during sputtering. This grain growth could be assisted by the the plasma energy during sputtering. Therefore proper thickness should be searched to acquire the good soft magnetic properties for the nanocrystalline film material. Good soft magnetic properties of Fe-Al-O film was acquired at the thickness of more than 900 nm.
Artificial superlattices of Co/Pd were prepared by RF magnetron sputtering Multilayered structure and compositional modulation were analyzed with a side angle x-ray diffractometer. It has been found that expansion of Co lattice occured in this artificial superlattice due to the lattice mismatch between Co and Pd. Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy could be observed when the Co layer thickness became less than 8${\AA}$ and maximum coercivity of 2350 Oe could be obtained in [Co(2.5 ${\AA}$)/Pd(9.3 ${\AA})]_{50}$/Pd$(200\;{\AA})$ with a perfect squareness of magnetic hysteresis loop. Characteristic of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in Co/Pd superlattices could be related to the expansion of Co lattice caused by Pd layer and it turned out that as the thickness of Pd layer increased, perpendicular magnetic anisotropy increased. The interface anisotropy energy and volume anisotropy energy were calculated to be 0.29 ergs/$cm^2$ and -$6.9{\times}10^6$ ergs/$cm^3$ respectively, which are consistent with the values reported elsewhere.
Various compositions of CoFeNi alloys have been electrodeposited in chloride bath and in sulfate bath, and evaluated for electrodeposition characteristics and magnetic properties. For electrodeposited CoFeNi thin film alloys, the increase of Fe content in the deposits from sulfate bath was considerably faster than those from chloride bath. The current efficiencies in sulfate bath showed observable decrease from $75\%\;to\;50\%$ while those in chloride bath showed no significant decrease. From the low coercivity of 3 Oe in the minimum and the higher squarenesses of the alloys from sulfate bath than those from chloride bath, the alloy at Co, Fe, and Ni contents of $80wt.\%,\;10wt.\%,\;and\;10wt.\%$ can be considered to be the best CoFeNi alloy in this research for the soft magnetic material.
The effects of differential partial pressures of oxygen during sputtering on the magnetic and recording characteristics of magneto-optical disks were investigated. Different flows of oxygen were deliberately introduced into the sputtering chamber to have a variety of partial pressures of oxygen during sputtering. A residual gas analyzer was employed to monitor the oxygen peak before, during, and after sputtering and to estimate the reacted oxygen amount. Most of the oxygen introduced into the chamaber was reacted during sputtering. As the partial pressure of oxygen increased, the oxygen content of the TbFeCoCr film increased also. The oxygen appeared to be bound as Tb-O, effectively decreasing the magnetically active Tb content of the film The coercivity decreased but the squareness of the Kerr hysteresis loops was still excellent. The perpendicular anisotropy was not significantly affected by oxygen amount. The carrier-to-noise ratio, includi!1g the write power sensitivity and bias field sensitivity did not change too much with oxygen content in the film The disks sputtered with oxygen showed better bias field sensitivity with lower write power threshold than the disk sputtered without oxygen, due to high demagnetization during domain formation. No significant degradation of coercivity for the disk sputtered oxygen was observed during an accelerated aging test.

We studied the phase formation and the effect of electrical properties of PZT thin films with changing the oxygen partial pressure in cooling after deposition of PZT thin film by reactive sputtering method. The roughness of thin film increased with decreasing the oxygen partial pressure in cooling due to the evaporation on the surface ofthin films and the grain size was not changed very much. The hysteresis property of PZT thin film was improved toward having a good squareness with increasing the cooling oxygen partial pressure. We observed the decrease of remanent polarization, retained polarization and coercive field with decreasing the oxygen partial pressure. Dielectric constant decreased gradually and internal bias field increased in the measurement of dielectric constant-voltage property with decreasing cooling oxygen partial pressure. We observed the increase of nonswitched polarization in the measurement of field accelerated retention and the decrease of nonswitched polarization with increasing the bias time.

Co-Pt alloy thin films were galvanostatically electrodeposited on Ru (30 nm)/Ta (5 nm)/Si (100) substrates from a amino-citrate based electrolyte. We used Ru(0002)-oriented buffer layers to control the crystallinity and orientation of the Co-Pt alloy thin films. The effect of solution temperature on the microstructure and magnetic properties of the Co-Pt alloy thin film was investigated. The samples were characterized by EDS, FESEM, XRD diffractometer using Cu $K{\alpha}$ radiation. The magnetic properties of these films were analyzed by a VSM and torque magnetometer. The Co-Pt alloy thin films were exhibited very high out-of-plane coercivity and squareness of the multilayer were 6527 Oe and 0.93, respectively, without heat treatment.
Amorphous FeBSiNb alloy ribbons having bulk glass forming ability and high saturation magnetic flux density were produced by single-roller melt spinning apparatus in the thickness range of 22∼102㎛. With the increase of thickness, the coercive force and squareness ratio decreased, while maximum permeability and AC permeability increased. However electrical resistivity was almost constant. Furthermore refined and complex magnetic domain structure was observed in thicker ribbons owing to the change in internal magnetic anisotropy. For the alloy with the thickness of 81㎛, small coercive force of 24 mOe and high effective permeability of 12,000 at 1㎑ were obtained, those are considered to be better comparing to the conventional soft magnetic amorphous alloys (∼20 ㎛). The good soft magnetic properties of the thick FeBSiNb amorphous alloys were attributed to the decrease in surface pinning effect during wall motion, appearance of perpendicular anisotropy and resulted domain refinement.
Barium ferrite thin films were reactively deposited with Fe and BaO composite targets by a facing tergects sputtering unit. When thermally oxidized silicon wafers were used as substrates, minimum substrate heating of $750^{\circ}C$ was necessary for the perfect c-axis alignment in barium ferrite films. To lower the critical substrate temperature for the good c-axis alignment, such seed layers as ZnO, ${\alpha}-Fe_{2}O_{3}$ and ${\gamma}-Fe_{2}O_{3}$ were tested. The excellent c-axis algnment of BaM was obtained at a substrate temperature of $600^{\circ}C$ on ZnO seed layer whose (002) plane was parallel to the substrate surface. The magnetic properties of the BaM film showed saturation magnetization of 295 emu/cc, perpendicular coercivity of 1.7 kOe and squareness of 0.75. Optimum deposition rate of $230\;{\AA}/min$ was obtained with the composite target and this was 5 to 20 times higher than those of other investigators with oxide targets.
$Cr_{100-x}Ti_x$ amorphous texture-inducing layers (TIL) were investigated to realize highly (002) oriented $L1_0$ FePt-C granular films through hetero-epitaxial growth on the (002) textured bcc-$Cr_{80}Mn_{20}$ seed layer (bcc-SL). As-deposited TILs showed the amorphous phase in Ti content of $30{\leq}x(at%){\leq}75$. Particularly, films with $40{\leq}x{\leq}60$ kept the amorphous phase against the heat treatment over $600^{\circ}C$. It was found that preference of the crystallographic texture for bcc-SLs is directly affected by the structural phase of TILs. (002) crystallographic texture was realized in bcc-SLs deposited on the amorphous TILs ($40{\leq}x{\leq}70$), whereas (110) texture was formed in bcc-SLs overlying on crystalline TILs (x < 30 and x > 70). Correlation between the angular distribution of (002) crystal orientation of bcc-SL evaluated by full width at half maximum of (002) diffraction (FWHM) and a grain diameter of bcc-SL indicated that while the development of the lateral growth for bcc-SL grain reduces FWHM, crystallization of amorphous TILs hinders FWHM. $L1_0$ FePt-C granular films were fabricated under the substrate heating process over $600^{\circ}C$ with having different FWHM of bcc-SL. Hysteresis loops showed that squareness ($M_r/M_s$) of the films increased from 0.87 to 0.95 when FWHM of bcc-SL decreased from $13.7^{\circ}$ to $3.8^{\circ}$. It is suggested that the reduction of (002) FWHM affects to the overlying MgO film as well as FePt-C granular film by means of the hetero-epitaxial growth.
