  • Based on the reproductive cycle of Rhodeus uyekii, the reproductive control mechanism was examined under the several combinations of photoperiod and temperature regimes at different phases of their reproductive cycle. In early spring, the gonads developed rapidly under the warm temperature condition(above $8^{\circ}C$), regardless of the photoperiod. In late spring or early summer, gonads intensely regressed under the high temperature condition(above $24^{\circ}C$), regardless of the photoperiod. Thus, it is concluded that the spawning period of R. uyekii is initiated by the rising of water temperature in spring and is terminated by the high temperature in early summer. In autumn, the gonadal recrudescence occurs under the conditions of artificial long daylength with warm temperature(15L/9D, $12^{\circ}C{\sim}20^{\circ}C$), whereas the gonads remain in the existing condition under the short daylength. Therefore, in autumn the gonadal recrudescence is prevented by the short daylength although the temperature is still in favorable condition. In bitterling, the responsiveness of the gonads to photoperiod varies clearly with seasons, which was declined during the winter but increased during the autumn. The critical photoperiod for maturation ranges 12~13 hours of light per day. The results indicate that the proper ranges of temperature and photoperiod for gonadal maturation of this species are from $8^{\circ}C$ to $8^{\circ}C$ and from 13L to 15L, respectively.

  • When sowing green peas in the autumn, proper seedling stands and growth quantity should be secured before winter begins. Also, for proper acclimatization, injuries caused by low temperatures, frost or high temperatures in the P.E. film during mulching, should be avoided during the regeneration period; that being early spring. The days required for growth in each stage in Yeosu are shorter than those in Naju because Yeosu has high temperatures during the growth period. Furthermore, in Yoesu, it was observed that there were more effective branches as well as effective and attached node positions on the branches. The first pods on the main stems and effective branches were observed to be higher than those in Naju. The number of pods per plant and the number of seeds per pod in Yoesu was greater than for those in Naju and the pod length was longer as well. Considering the missing plant rate, growth, and green pod yield, the optimum sowing date for the green pea was mid-November in both location. The stable acclimatizing date for the green pea was early March when the highest yield can be acquired due to a lot of effective branches and pods per plant and with the lowest missing plant rate and rate of injury in acclimatization.

  • As a part of studies on potassium(K) behavior in grassland with respect to magnesium(Mg) balance of ruminants, seasonal variation of K and Mg contents of forages including native gasses grown in grazing pasture and meadow were investigated. During an experimental period from April to October of 1984, two times of grazings were carried out in the orchardgrass (Dacfylis glomerata L.) and the tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.)dominant grazing pastures, and forage plants (forages and native grasses) were sampled monthly and also K and Mg contents were determined without separating into individual plant species (Experiment 1). All the plant species grown in the two meadows which situated in the grazing pastures were harvested five times during the same period, separated into individual plant species, and botanical composition (SDR, ) and K and Mg contents of the plant species were determined (Experiment 2). The results obtained were as follows: 1. During the experimental period in the orchardgrass grazing pasture K contents of the forage plants were the highest in spring, and the seasonal variation of the contents in the orchardgrass pasture (1.5-5.8 % in a dry matter basis) was more significant than that of forage plants in the tall fescue grazing pasture (3.0- 3.8 %). 2. The Mg contents of forage plants in the orchardgrass grazing pasture ranged under 2.0 mg/g DW from Arpil until July, and the contents in the orchardgrass pasture (1.5-3.1 mg/g DW) was in the lower range than that of forage plants in the tall fescue pasture (2.0-3.8 mg/g DW). (Experiment I). 3. Orchardgrass was the dominant species in the orchardgrass meadow until July, but several species of native grasses were observed from summer (July) and native grasses such as Digitaria adscendens and Echinochlw crus-galli became dominant in autumn (October). 4. Seasonal variation of K contents of orchardgrass was in the range of 3.9-5.9 %, and the contents was higher in spring (May) and in autumn (October). The variation of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) was in the range of 3.6-5.0 %, that of tall fescue 3.8-4.8 %, and that of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) 2.7-3.5 %, respectively. 5 . Seasonal variation of Mg content of white clover was in the range of 2.9-3.7 mg, that of tall fescue 2.0- 3.3 mg, and that of orchardgrass 1.6-2.8 mg/g DW, respectively. The variation of the contents of Italian ryegrass was in the range of 1.3-1.9 mg/g DW. And Mg contents of the forage plants were higher in summer(July) 6. In autumn (October and November ) native grasses such as D. adscendens and E. crus-galli contained lower K contents (1.7-3.9 %), but higher Mg contents (3.2-10.1 mg/g DW) than the forages contained. (Experiment 2) From the results above, it is known that K contents ranged higher in younger forages in viewpoint of growth stage and higher in spring and autumn, and that Mg contents ranged lower in spring. Therefore, the mineral imbalance or hypomagnesaemic (grass) tetany can be triggered in spring or autumn, and more frequently by such plant species as orchardgrass and Italian ryegrass with lower Mg and/or higher K contents than by tall fescue. And it is suggested that the dominant native grasses in autumn such as D. adscendens and E. emsgalli can contribute to the prevention of the tetany with higher Mg and lower K contents.

  • To clarify the bloom pattern and species succession in phytoplankton community, the population dynamics with the determination of physico-chemical factors have been studies in Masan Bay, the south sea of Korea, for the periods November 2003-October 2004. Concentration of $NH_4-N$ was always higher than that of $NO_3-N$, which was similar level as compared to other costal areas. $PO_4-P$ concentration was lower than those in other coastal areas but similar to oligotrophic environments. Thus, phosphate seems the limiting nutrient rather than nitrogen. $SiO_2-Si$ concentration was also low as compared to other costal areas. Si:P ratio was low from autumn to winter, suggesting silicate and/or phosphate limitation during this period. The cell density of phytoplankton was high in winter 2003 and early autumn 2004. The carbon biomass was high in winter 2003 and summer 2004. And chlorophyll-a concentration was high in late autumn 2003 and summer 2004. Among 78 species of phytoplankton found in the bay during the investigated period, dominant species were two diatoms of Cylindrotheca closterium, Skeletonema costatum, and three dinoflagellates of Heterocapsa triquetra, Prorocentrum minimum, P. triestinum, and one raphidophyte of Heterosigma akashiwo. P. minimum dominated from late autumn to winter, but it was replaced by H. triquetra in late winter. P. triestinum dominated from late spring to early summer. Simultaneously, H. akashiwo cell density steadily increased, and it became dominant with C. closterium in late summer. With decreasing of H. akashiwo and C. closterium, S. costatum became the most dominant species in autumn. The canonical analyses showed that total phytoplankton cell density related to diatom cell density and it was affected by temperature, and concentrations of $NO_3-N\;and\;PO_4-P$. The carbon bio-mass and $chlorophyll-{\alpha}$ concentration related to diatom- and dinoflagellate cell densities and these were affected by flagellate cell density, salinity, and concentrations of $SiO_2-Si\;and\;PO_4-P$. Last six years monitoring data in Masan city obtained from Korean Meteorological Agency indicates gradual increase in air temperature. And the precipitation decreased especially in spring season. The winter bloom found in 2003 may be caused by the increase in the temperature and this bloom subsequently induced the nutrients depletion, which continued until next spring probably due to no precipitation. Therefore, the spring bloom, which had been usually observed in the bay, might disappear in 2004.

  • The seasonal variations of picoplankton including Prochlorococcus, Synechococcus and Picoeukayotes around Ulneung Island were investigated by flow cytometry in spring, summer and autumn in 2006. All groups of picoplankton showed clear seasonal patterns in population abundance. Among the group, Synechococcus showed the most prominent seasonal variation during the study period. The maximal abundance of Synechococcus occurred in summer and the lowest in autumn. The seasonal distribution of Prochlorococcus displayed the reverse tendency with that of Synechococcus. The abundance of Prochlorococcus ranged from $2.9{\times}10^3$ cells/ml in summer to $311{\times}10^3$ cells/ml in autumn. However, the seasonal distribution of Picoeukaryotes was shown to be relatively constant, and the maximal abundance was $81.5{\times}10^3$ cells/ml in summer. The highest abundance of Picoeukaryotes occurred in summer and the lowest in autumn and the seasonal distribution in abundance of Picoeukaryotes showed a similar trend with that of Synechococcus. The estimated total carbon biomass of picoplankton were ranged from $74.7\;mg\;C/m^2$ to $1,055.9\;mg\;C/m^2$. The highest total carbon biomass occurred in summer, but lowest occurred in autumn. The pattern of the contribution of three picoplankton to total autotrophic picoplankton carbon is different. The contribution of Synechococcus to total autotrophic picoplankton carbon is increased to 75%, but the contribution of Prochlorococcus dropped to 12% in summer. The contribution of Picoeukaryotes is ranged from 24% in summer to 72.5% in spring.

  • This research is conducted to study the effect to rebbuding, death atop, yielding and occurrence of twig blight disease with the interemediate cutting periods of mulberry branch and at the picking levels of leaf remains in autumn. The results obtained are as follows: 1. Re-budding branches are decreased with delaying of interval cutting period, and that more leaves remained lesser both re-budding branches and buds are observed. Therefore, it is better that leaves remained are placed on the upper part of branch, practically with 3-5 leaf remains. It has decreased re-budding branches, in case cutting is conducted in Sept. 20 with picking leaving 3-5 leaf on. 2. With regard that all picking increases the percentage of death atop of the branch and upper half part picking increases slightly over the other treats. Although it seems unlikely to be different in the other treats with cutting period, exception of all picking, it is elucidated better that the all picking after cutting in Sept. 15 represents unusually high, seemingly effected by the temperature contition preferable to the life of twig blight disease along with the lack of branch nutrition caused by the all picking. 3. In view of yielding, it has no difference in autumn yielding with cutting period, but more picking levels of leaf remains, more yielding. In spring yield, both no picking and all picking is the lowest, in spite of cutting period. Each treat produces high yielding except the no picking if rutting is done in Sept. 15 and Sept. 20, respectively; otherwise it is done earlier or later, each treat produces low yielding. It is suggested that yielding ability in following spring affected by the autumn picking because all picking treats represent lower yielding ability than no picking ones except of cutting in Sept. 15 and Sept. 20. With respect to total yield in spring and autumn, it is represented that other treats, among which cutting in Sept. 15 and Sept. 20 is especially high, produce higher yielding than both no picking and all picking. But no difference seemed in leaf remained treats. In these respects, it may be concluded that 3-5 leaf remains after the interval cutting in Sept. 15 to Sept. 20 increases the yielding throughout two seasons and it is suggested that 3-5 leaf remains after cutting in Sept. 5 to Sept. 10 has no difference with no picking and cutting after that day. 4. Diseases in the branch remained are twig blight, massaria-bye, and Die-back, of which twig blight attacks tremendously and slight ouurence in messaria-byo and Die-back. In ouurence of twig blight, it is appeared much in all picking and seasonal occurence high in Sept. 15 with 92.9, and in Sept. 30 with 100 as index, respectively. Also it occurs ,considerably in upper part picking but little occurrence in no picing. 5. It is considered that negative correlation among re-budding percentage. No. of re-budding leaf, and spring yielding is found, seemingly without heavy correlation at -0.42, and -0.27, respectively. However, death atop of branch and occurence of twig blight has little correlation with spring yield. On the other hand, positive correlation highly appeared with the correlation coefficient at 0.8 between occurence of twig blight and death atop of branch.

  • The magnitudes of sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies at 13 coastal stations along the Korean peninsula in the summer and winter for the past 29years (1969-1997) are more larger than those in the spring and autumn. The periods of positive SST anomalies (negative SST anomalies) longer than 1$^{\circ}C$ were 75(74.5) months in the eastern coast of Korea, 47.8(51.6) months in the southern coast of Korea and 69.5(69.8) months in the western coast of Korea during the past 348 months (1969-1997). The predominant periods of the low-pass filtered monthly SST anomalies are 3 years or 13 months, even another predominant period is 24 months. The spatial variation of SST anomalies were confined by regional seas of the Korean peninsula, such as the East Sea, the South Sea and the West Sea itself.

  • A seasonal characteristic of marine environment and fish assemblages in the coastal waters of Jeju Island were determined using samples collected by a trammel net in from 2012 to 2013. Annual mean temperature and salinity were $18.8^{\circ}C$, 33.7psu (2012) and $18.8^{\circ}C$, 33.8psu (2013) which shows stable water mass. nutrient concentrations represent that dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) ranged from 0.030 to 0.217mg/L, dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) from 0.002 to 0.010mg/L, and silicate ($SiO_2$) from 0.096 to 0.292mg/L. Chlorophyll a concentrations of phytoplankton ranged from 0.905 to $1.125{\mu}g/L$ were appeared the highest in summer and the lowest in winter. Suspended Solid(SS) concentrations ranged from 1.200 to 2.100mg/L (mean, 1.634mg/L) were appeared the highest in autumn and the lowest in spring. During the survey period, a total of 83 species (48 families and 12 orders) of fishes were identified, Perciformes and Scorpaeniformes accounted for 63.9% of the total number. The number of species was higher in summer than in winter, showing a peak in summer at 57 species and a low in winter at 47 species. The number of individuals and the biomass peaked in summer at 694 individuals and 151.9kg, and were the lowest in autumn at 466 individuals and 106.5kg. The diversity index, evenness index and richness index were appeared 2.92~3.14, 0.75~0.83 and 7.06~8.56 at each stations. the dominance index were appeared highest in spring and summer, were appeared the lowest in winter and autumn. The Filefish (Stephanolepis cirrhifer), Bluestriped angelfish (Chaetodontoplus septentrionalis), Marbled rockfish (Sebastiscus marmoratus), Rabbit fish (Siganus fuscescens), Blackfin sweeper (Pempheris japonica) were dominant species, which occurred abundantly during the entire survey period. The subtropical fishes were identified total of 41 species (49.4%) and the number of species was higher in summer at 29 (50.9%) species and a low in winter at 20 (42.6%) species. The dominant species of subtropical fishes were appeared Bluestriped angelfish, Blackfin sweeper, Rabbit fish, Scarbreast tuskfish (Choerodon azurio), Ballonfish (Diodon holocanthus), Flagfish (Goniistius zonatus), Blue-spotted boxfish (Ostracion immaculatus) in study sites. The subtropical fishes of species, individual and biomass showed significant correlation with environmental factors (Chlorophyll a, DIN, DIP, $SiO_2$) in almost all sampling sites.
