  • The paper presents the dynamic stability of a vertical cantilevered pipe conveying fluid and haying translational linear spring supports. Real pipe systems may have some elastic hanger supports or other mechanical attached parts. which can be regarded as attached spring supports. Governing equations are derived by energy expressions, and numerical technique using Galerkin's method is applied to the equations of small motion of the pipe. Effects of spring supports on the dynamic stability of a vortical cantilevered pipe conveying fluid are fully investigated for various locations and spring constants of elastic supports.

  • The mechanical spring is one of widely used machine elements. Among various kinds, flat-type spring loaded by a rotating pin was studied. A flat spring was simplified to a cantilever beam, and numerical analysis was attempted. Since the loading pin rotates about a separate axis from the fixed spring or vice versa, the location, direction, and magnitude of the contact force including normal contact and friction loads vary accordingly. Meanwhile, the spring is deformed substantially as the relative motion progresses. Therefore, this problem needs to be formulated taking the follower loading characteristics and geometrical non-linearity into account. Derived nonlinear differential equation was solved to yield the spring deflection, contact force and the torque to rotate the pin, and the result was compared with a finite element solution. Also, the influences of principal design parameters were studied. The proposed methodology is expected to be useful for the design of pin-loaded flat spring and the prevention of mechanical failures in the form of yielding or fatigue failure of spring or severe wear of the components.

  • In this study, a numerical analysis of offshore installation using a floating crane with heave compensator is carried out in time domain. The motion analysis of crane vessels is based on floating body dynamics using convolution integral and the crane wire is treated as simple spring. The lifted structure is assumed as a rigid body with 3 degree-of-freedom translational motion. The heave compensator is numerically modelled by the generalized spring-damper system. Firstly, forced motion simulations of crane wire system are carried out to figure out the basic principle of heave compensator. The transfer function of crane wire system is obtained and effective wave period of heave compensator are found. Then, coupled analysis of crane vessel, crane wire, and lifted structure are performed in regular and irregular sea conditions. Two different crane vessels and two lifted structures (suction pile and manifold) are considered in this study. Through a series of numerical calculations, the effective zone of heave compensator is investigated with respect to wave period and crane wire length.

  • The results of a simulation study of variable liquid column oscillations in U-tanks with a novel control scheme are presented. The configuration under investigation is analogous to that of the tuned liquid-column damper used to suppress oscillatory motion in large structures like tall buildings and cargo ships. However, by virtue of an adequate controller, the response of amplitude of the U-tanks becomes larger in a desired frequency range. The motion of wave energy conversion system equipped with a variable liquid column oscillator is described by a series of nonlinear differential equations. The equations describe the motion of body under ocean wave excitation, and the motion of liquid with an air-spring effect caused by the compression and expansion of air in vertical liquid columns and air chambers. It is shown that the effect of the air-spring has a vital role to maintain the natural frequency of oscillation in the system to synchronize with the frequency of the ocean wave, thus the system provides the most effective mode for energy extraction from the ocean.

  • In this study, the free motion of a riser due to vortex shedding was numerically simulated with Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) turbulence models. A numerical simulation program was developed by applying the Rhie-Chow interpolation method to the pressure correction of the OpenFOAM standard solver pimpleDyMFoam. To verify the developed program, the vortex shedding around the fixed riser at Re = 3900 was calculated, and the results were compared with the existing experimental and numerical data. Moreover, the vortex-induced vibration of a riser supported by a linear spring was numerically simulated while varying the spring constant. The results are compared with published direct numerical simulation (DNS) results. The present calculation results show that the numerical method is appropriate for simulating the vortex-induced motion of a riser, including lock-in phenomena.

  • This paper proposed an optimal plate spring design for the optical pickup suspension. This method requires an analytic solution of plate spring suspension and it can be obtained by Castigliano's theorem and moment equilibrium. However, it is very complex due to the many design variables coupled and some constraints such as pitching angle in focusing motion caused by the characteristics of plate spring. Because of the complex formulation of the analytical solution that is used as the design objective, the genetic algorithm is used to find the optimal design value satisfying design constraints.

  • Due to the complexity of mathematical expressions, the literature concerning the free vibration analysis of plates carrying multiple three-degree-of-freedom (dof) spring-mass systems is rare. In this paper, the three degrees of freedom (dof's) for a spring-mass system refer to the translational motion of its lumped mass in the vertical ($\bar{z}$) direction and the two pitching motions of its lumped mass about the two horizontal ($\bar{x}$ and $\bar{y}$) axes. The basic concept of this paper is to replace each three-dof spring-mass system by a set of equivalent springs, so that the free vibration characteristics of a rectangular plate carrying any number of three-dof spring-mass systems can be obtained from those of the same plate supported by the same number of sets of equivalent springs. Since the three dof's of the lumped mass for each three-dof spring-mass system are eliminated to yield a set of equivalent springs, the total dof of the entire vibrating system is not affected by the total number of the spring-mass systems attached to the rectangular plate. However, this is not true in the conventional finite element method (FEM), where the total dof of the entire vibrating system increases three if one more three-dof spring-mass system is attached to the rectangular plate. Hence, the computer storage memory required by using the presented equivalent spring method (ESM) is less than that required by the conventional FEM, and the more the total number of the three-dof spring-mass systems attached to the plate, the more the advantage of the ESM. In addition, since manufacturing a spring with the specified stiffness is much easier than making a three-dof spring-mass system with the specified spring constants and mass magnitude, the presented theory of replacing a three-dof spring-mass system by a set of equivalent springs will be also significant from this viewpoint.

  • A vibration model of powder transfer equipment is developed by the lumped parameter method. A Powder transfer equipment does surging motion, bouncing motion and pitching motion. Motion equation becomes decoupling and removed vibration exciting source about pitching motion, and therefore designers presented the optimum design plan to be able to do adjustment with motion trajectory of powder transfer equipment. That is, way for design to be able to do motion trajectory of powder transfer equipment through change of design element as installation position and direction of motor, driving speed, mass unbalance, stiffness coefficient and installation position of support coil spring is presented. The design results, powder transfer equipment were able to know that fatigue destruction does not occur, and the reason is because maximum stress working on a basket structure is more very than fatigue strength small.

  • The analysis of human arm motion during steering maneuver is carried out for investigation of man-machine interface of driver and steering system Each arm is modeled as interconnection of upper arm, lower arm, and hand by rotational joints that can properly represents permissible joint motion, and both arms are connected to a steering wheel through spring and damper at the contact points. The joint motion law during steering motion is determined through the measurement of each arm movement, and subsequent inverse kinematic analysis. Combining the joint motion law and inverse dynamic analysis, joint stiffness of arm is estimated. Arm dynamic analysis model for steering maneuver is setup, and is validated through the comparison with experimentally measured data, which shows relatively good agreement. To demonstrate the usefulness of the arm model, it is applied to study the effect of steering column angle on the steering motion.
