  • The wheel bearing in vehicles has been improved to unit module by joining a bearing to a hub in order to achieve weight reduction and easy assembly. Currently, the contact force between a raceway and balls of a bearing is applied as the external force in order to analyse the structure of the unit type bearings. In this paper, simplified boundary conditions are discussed for structure analysis of wheel bearing unit. From the procedure, the contact conditions of balls and race in wheel bearing unit are considered as equivalent non-linear spring elements. The end node of a spring element is constrained in displacement. And the external force of boundary conditions is applied at the contact point between tire and road. For the evaluation of this analysis, its results for the force of spring elements are compared with contact forces of calculated results. and also maximum equivalent stresses of analysis are compared with results of test at the flange of inner ring. The analysis results with proposed boundary conditions are more accurate than results from analysis which is generally used.

  • In this study, a carbon nanotube probe (CNT probe) is proposed as a mechanical force transducer for the measurement of pico-Newton (pN) order force in biological applications. In order to measure nantube's displacement in the air or liquid environment, the fabrication of a CNT probe with tip-specific loading of fluorescent dyes is performed using tip- specific functionalization of the nanotube and chemical bonding between dyes and nanotube. Also, we experimentally investigated the mechanical properties of the CNT probe using electrostatic actuation and fluorescence microscope measurement. Using fluorescence measurement of the tip deflection according to the applied voltage, we optimized the bending stiffness of the CNT probe, therefore determined the spring constant of the CNT probe. The results show that the spring constant of CNT probes is as small as 1 pN/nm and CNT probes can be used to measure pN order force.

  • The research direction of the automobile industry worldwide is speeding up research to improve fuel efficiency through weight reduction as the weight of automobiles increases due to environmental problems, convenience demands, and safety problems. As a way to solve weight reduction, there is a method of improving mechanical properties by improving the development and manufacturing method of lightweight materials with replaceable mechanical properties. Therefore, research on the molding and processing technology of aluminum, which is a lightweight material, is being actively conducted. In this study, aluminum material was applied. By using Autoform S/W, a press forming analysis program, the blank holding force, mold die R, and bead restraint force were selected in three levels, respectively, and the results and optimization of formability and shape freezing were carried out. In this study, aluminum material was applied. By using Autoform S/W, a press molding analysis program, the blank holding force, mold die R, and bead restraint force were selected in three levels, respectively, and the results and optimization of formability and shape freezing were carried out. The optimized results were confirmed by comparative analysis of formability and Spring Back. As a result of the experiment, it was possible to confirm the result value of the Spring Back of the final product according to the tensile change of the material.

  • The hold-down spring forces of Kori nuclear fuels were measured for seven fuel assemblies having 1 to 4 cycles of irradiation histories in the Kori Unit-1 and -2 reactor. The fuel assemblies examined had burnup from 17 to 38 GWD/MTU and the examination was conducted in KAERI PIEF spent fuel storage pool with the newly developed underwater hold-down suing force measuring device. The measurement was made within the elastic deformation ranges and the trends of hold-down spring force relaxation behavour were examined.

  • A Hotchkiss spring has been widely utilized for commercial vehicle. Usually, the Hotchkiss spring has non-linear characteristics, i.e. it has a piecewise spring stiffness as well as hysterisis phenomenon. Therefore, the modeling of the Hotchkiss spring requires many considerations to fulfill satisfactory vehicle kinematic and dynamic relationships. Also, the spring has difficulties in modeling for presenting contact mechanism. In this paper, the modeling technique for the Hotchkiss spring has been descried. The modeling covers non-linear characteristics as well as contact problems for multi-body dynamic simulation. The force-displacement results are compared with experimental and FEM ones. Also, the comparison between three link type leaf spring model and proposed one has been considered in this paper.

  • This paper presents a force model of the clean tube system, which was developed as a means of transferring air-floated wafers inside a closed tube filled with super clean air. The recovering force from the holes for floating wafers is modeled as a linear spring and thus the wafers motion is modeled as a mass-spring-damper system. The propelling forces are modeled as linear along with the wafer location. The paper also proposes a control method to emit and stop a wafer at the center of a control unit. It reveals the minimum value of the propelling force to leave from the control unit. In order to stop the wafer, it utilizes the exact time when the wafer arrives at the position to activate the propelling force. Experiments with the clean tube system built for the 12 inch wafer shows the validity of the proposed model and the algorithm.

  • On this study, we operated the dynamic response for impact load of impact absorbing system for spreader by the finite element analysis and showed respectively the spring constant and the damping coefficient which the reaction force by impact was the lowest value for three types impact absorbing system according to the change of system, also we presented the change of impact reaction force according to the spring constant and the damping coefficient. Additionally, among the three types impact absorbing system according to the change of system, the reaction force of model II was the lowest value and the next model which has higher value than model II was model Iand model III has the highest value in the three types.

  • The present paper proposes a novel cableless magnetic actuator with a new propulsion module that exhibits a very high thrusting force. This actuator contains an electrical inverter that directly transforms DC from button batteries into AC. The electrical DC-AC inverter incorporates a mass-spring system, a reed switch, and a curved permanent magnet that switches under an electromagnetic force. The actuator is moved by the inertial force of the mass-spring system due to mechanical resonance energy. The experimental results show that the actuator is able to move upward at a speed of 33 mm/s when using 10 button batteries when pulling a 10 g load mass. This cableless magnetic actuator has several possible applications, including narrow-pipe inspection and maintenance.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate free vibrations and critical loads of the uniform Beck's columns with a tip spring, carrying a tip mass. The ordinary differential equation governing free vibrations of such Beck's column subjected to a follower force is derived based on the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory. Both the divergence and flutter critical loads are calculated from the load-frequency curves that are obtained by solving the differential equation numerically. The critical loads are presented in the figures as functions of various non-dimensional system parameters such as the mass moment of inertia and spring parameter.

  • In this paper, the design of automatic impact force control mechanism of hydraulic breaker was studied. The control mechanism uses the change of piston upper chamber pressure, when the hydraulic breaker impacts various strength rock. The piston stroke is controlled by rock strength sensing valve, piston stroke switching valve, and piston control valve. It is imperative to denote the area of each valve section, the spring constant of the spring. It provides convenience to users by automatically adjusting the appropriate striking force, according to the strength of the rock. Additionally, by increasing work productivity, it can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions due to fuel efficiency reduction.
