  • A thin metal plate such as detent spring has the shape deformation due to the phenomenon of spring back after press machining and heat treatment process. This requires the correction of spring shape and force in final inspection process. To do correction of the shape deformation the impact force is manually applied to the bended part of detent spring after measuring the shape deformation and spring force. To develop the automatic spring force correction system, applied force of occurring plastic deformation must be derived from the experimental method. But frequent change of spring shape and material makes it difficult to accomplish the experimental method to be applied. This paper describes the analytical method for detent spring force correction system is to be substituted for the experimental method. FEM(Finite Element Method) is used to find the boundary value between elastic and plastic deformation in the analytical method. To confirm the validity of the analytical method, the result of two methods is compared each other at various applied force conditions. It shows that the simulation result of the analytical method is consistent with the result of the experimental method within the error bound ${\pm}$5%. The result of this paper is useful for development of the automatic spring correction system and reduction of the complicated and tedious processes involved in experimental method.

  • The influence of hold-down spring (HDS) on the vibration characteristics of core barrel is studied in this paper. First, the vibration characteristics experiment of core barrel was carried out with four type of different hold-down spring. These hold-down springs represent the same hold-down force under different spring stiffness and different hold-down force under the same spring stiffness. And then a new finite element method for researching the influence of hold-down spring on the vibration characteristics of core barrel was presented. This new method could consider the influence of the hold-down force and the spring stiffness at the same time. The results suggest that, the hold-down force and friction have greater influence on the vibration characteristics of core barrel than the spring stiffness, and the influence is nonlinear. The influence of the boundary condition on beam mode is greater than that on shell mode for core barrel.

  • This paper describes a natural frequency analysis conducted to find out a suitable working area for a spring-manipulator system generating a large vibrating force with mechanical resonance. Large force generation is one of the functions that we hope for a robot. For example, a weeding robot is required to generate a large force, because some weeds have roots spreading deeply and tightly. The spring-manipulator system has a spring element as an end-effector, so it can be in a state of resonance with the elasticity of the spring element and the inertial characteristics of the manipulator. A force generation method utilizing the mechanical resonance has potential to produce a large force that cannot be realized by a static method. A method for calculating a natural frequency of a spring-manipulator system with the generalized inertia tensor is proposed. Then the suitable working area for the spring-manipulator system is identified based on a natural frequency analysis. If a spring-manipulator system operates in the suitable working area, it can sustain mechanical resonance and generate a large vibrating force. Moreover, it is shown that adding a mass at the tip of the manipulator expands the suitable working area.

  • In this study, a variable elasticity spring was applied to improve the pressure control precision of conventional relief valves. The equilibrium equation of the forces acting on the valve poppet was derived; it is demonstrated that matching the elastic rate of the pressure-adjusting coil spring to the equivalent elastic rate of the flow force improved the pressure override. The procedures that were used to design the variable elasticity spring are presented, and some applications of the variable elasticity spring are also introduced. Computer simulations were used to analyze three cases: a poppet-closed flow force structure, a poppet-open flow force structure with a constant elasticity spring, and a structure containing a variable elasticity spring. It is confirmed that the pressure control precision of the relief valve can be significantly improved upon by applying a variable elasticity spring to the poppet-open flow force structure.

  • In case contact between point of contacts is not achieved well, contact resistance is grown, and by current concentration at current conducting contacts can weld. In order to decrease contact resistance between contacts in case of busbar, installing spring between fixed contact and moving contact. and then force on faying surface of contacts increase and contact resistance decrease. But, in case increase force of spring to widen contact area, operating force moving contact can grow, on the contrary force of spring is small, contact resistance becomes low. Therefore, need to optimize force and number of spring. position, and also need to examine force change on contact surface at point of contact moving. In this paper, dynamic kinetics analysis for force on faying surface of contacts is performed at unsteady state. It is showed to not uniform force on surface between contacts, and we can got more uniform force by means of change spring position.

  • A simply supported beam subjected to a uniformly distributed tangential follower force and the two successively moving spring-mass systems upon it constitute this vibration system. The influences of the velocities of the moving spring-mass system, the distance between two successively moving spring-mass systems and the uniformly distributed tangential follower force have been studied on the dynamic behavior of a simply supported beam by numerical method. The uniformly distributed tangential follower force is considered within its critical value of a simply supported beam without two successively moving spring-mass systems, and three kinds of constant velocities and constant initial displacement of two successively moving spring-mass systems are also chosen. Their coupling effects on the transverse vibration of the simply supported beam are inspected too. In this study the simply supported beam is deflected with small vibration proportional to natural frequency of the moving spring-mass systems. According to the increasing of initial displacement of the moving spring-mass systems the amplitude of the small vibration of the simply supported beam is increased due to the spring force. The velocity of the moving spring-mass system more affect on the transverse deflection of simply supported beam than other factors of the system and the effect is dominant at high velocity of the moving spring-mass systems.

  • In this study, we investigated the effect of the spring constant on frictional behavior at a nanoscale through molecular dynamics simulation. A small cube-shaped tip was modeled and placed on a flat substrate. We did not apply the normal force to the tip but applied adhesive force between the tip and the substrate. The tip was horizontally pulled by a virtual spring to generate relative motion against the substrate. The controlled spring constant of the virtual spring ranged from 0.3 to 70 N/m to reveal its effect on frictional behavior. During the sliding simulation, we monitored the frictional force and the position of the tip. As the spring constant decreased from 70 to 0.3 N/m, the frictional force increased from 0.1 to 0.25 nN. A logarithmic relationship between the frictional force and spring constant was established. The stick-slip instability and potential energy slope increased with a decreasing spring constant. Based on the results, an increase in the spring constant reduces the probability of trapping in the local minima on the potential energy surface. Thus, the energy loss of escaping the potential well is minimized as the spring constant increases.

  • The influences of spring position and spring stiffness on the critical force of a cantilevered beam subjected to a follower force are investigated. The spring attatched to the beam is assumed to be a translational one and can be located at arbitrary positions of the beam as it has not been assumed so far. The effects of transeverse shear deformation and rotary intertia of the beam are also included in this analysis. The charateristic equation for the system is derived and a finite element model of the beam using local coordinates is formulated through extended Hamilton's principle. It is found that when the spring is located at position less than that of 0.5L, the flutter type instability only exists. It is shown that the spring position approaches to the free end of the beam from its midpoint, instability type is changed from flutter to divergence through the jump phenomina according to the increase of spring stiffness.

  • This study describes a method which can attenuate reaction force effectively for an air spring system composed of an air spring and auxiliary chamber. For the analysis, the nonlinear governing equation of the air spring system is derived. For a performance improvement of the system, change of the heat transfer effect and the mass flow rates is included in the analysis of the air spring system. The simulation study is presented to show the reaction force is changed by variations in heat transfer characteristics and the air spring system of isothermal process has the best performance. As a result, to improve attenuation characteristics of reaction force, a process in the air spring system should be maintained near isothermal process.

  • In the automotive suspension system, especially, Mcpherson strut type, if the resultant of the force through tire and the link reaction force is not coincident with the spring force, the side load against shock-absorber occur. The magnitude of side load is proportional to the difference between resultant force and spring force. To reduce side load, several method can be used, and one is to use the side load coil spring. This study summarize the development results of side load coil spring, i.e., how to design, analysis, manufacture, and test.
