  • Thick and dense deposit of higher than 97% of theoretical density was formed by induction plasma spraying. To investigate the effects of powder morphology on the density of deposit, two different kinds of Yttria-Stabilized-Zirconia powder, METCO202NS (atomized & agglomerated) and AMDRY146 (fused & crushed), were used and compared. After plasma treatment, porous METCO202NS powder was all the more densely deposited and its density was increased. In addition to the effect of powder morphology, the process parameters such as, sheath gas composition, probe position, particle size and spraying distance, and so on, were evaluated. The result of experiment with AMDRY146 powder, particle size and spraying distance affected highly on the density of the deposit. The optimum process condition for the deposition of -75 ${\mu}m$ of 20%-Yttria-Stabilized-Zirconia powder was 120/201/min of Ar/$H_2$ gas rate, 80 kW of plasma plate power, 8 cm of probe position and 150 Torr of spraying chamber pressure, at which its density showed 97.91% of theoretical density and its deposition rate was 20 mm/min. All the results were assessed by statistical approach what is called ANOVA.

  • In this study, the degree of particle melting in $Y_2O_3$ plasma spraying and its effects on coating characteristics have been investigated in terms of microstructural features, microhardness and scratch resistance. Plasma sprayed $Y_2O_3$ coatings were formed using two different powder feeding systems: a system in which the powder is fed inside the plasma gun and a system in which the powder is fed externally. The internal powder spraying method generated a well-defined lamellae structure that was characterized by a thin porous layer at the splat boundary and microcracks within individual splats. Such micro-defects were generated by the large thermal contraction of splats from fully-molten droplets. The external powder spraying method formed a relatively dense coating with a particulate deposition mode, and the deposition of a higher fraction of partially-melted droplets led to a much reduced number of inter-splat pores and intra-splat microcracks. The microhardness and scratch resistance of the $Y_2O_3$ coatings were improved by external powder spraying; this result was mainly attributed to the reduced number of micro-defects.

  • Yttria stabilized zirconia coating is an attractive material for several engineering applications. In order to produce coatings with consistent and reliable performance it is important to understand the influence of spraying parameters on the coating properties and optimize the spraying parameters. In this paper the low pressure plasma spray(LPPS) deposition of as-received zirconia powder has been investigated using simple one-factor-at-a-time approach. The deposition efficiency was chosen to evaluate the melting characteristics of the as-received zirconia powder. The results obtained indicated that the deposition efficiency of zirconia powder is very sensitive to the spraying parameters such as plasma gas flow rate and ranges from 24% to 57% The microstructure and the phase composition of zirconia coating deposited with the different plasma spraying parameters were also examined by SEM and XRD respectively. The relationship between deposition efficiency and the microstructure of zirconia coating was discussed.

  • Formation and characteristics of spraying powder for BSCCO High-Tc superconductor prepared by plasma spray coating were investigated. The addition of 3% of binder gives the best flowability of the powder. Ball milling for 30h and 35h gives the best flowability of powder in the case of 2001 and 0212, respectively. The withdraw ratio increases upon binder addition from 12 to 27% in the case of 2001 and from 18 to 31% in the case of 0212 for sieving powder of $30-90{\mu}m$ in size. The built-up efficiency for $100{\mu}m$ thickness of spray coating is increased more than 30% by binder addition. The microstructure of the spray coated layers was investigated by XRD and EDS analysis.

  • In this study, multi-ply SiC fiber reinforced Ti-6Al-4V composites have been manufactured by plasma spraying and subsequent vacuum hot pressing. Two different sizes of Ti-6Al-4V feedstock powders were used for plasma spraying to form matrix. A considerable amount of oxygen was incorporated into as-sprayed Ti matrix during plasma spraying, and consequently caused matrix embrittlement. The use of coarse-sized feedstock powder reduced oxygen contamination, but tended to increase fiber spacing irregularity and fiber strength degradation. Longitudinal tensile strength and ductility of the composites were mainly affected by the matrix oxygen content.

  • Tungsten coatings with different interlayers onto the oxygen-free copper substrates were fabricated by atmosphere plasma spraying. The effects of different interlayers of NiCrAl, NiAl and W/Cu on bonding strength were studied. SEM, EDS and XRD were used to investigate the photographs and compositions of these coatings. The tungsten coatings with different initial particle sizes resulted in different microstructures. Oxidation was not detected in the tungsten coating, but in the interlayer, it was found by both XRD and EDS. The tungsten coating deposited directly onto the copper substrate presented higher bonding strength than those with different interlayers.

  • Cold spraying is a fairly new coating technique, which within the last decade attracted serious attention of research groups and spray companies. As compared to thermal spraying, the low process temperatures in cold spraying result in unique coating properties, which promise new applications. Since particles impact with high kinetic energy in the solid state, new concepts to describe coating formation are requested to enable the full potential of this new technology. The present contribution gives a brief review of current models concerning bonding, supplying a description of the most influential spray parameters and consequences for new developments. With respect to spray forming by cold cold spraying, microstructures and thick, further machineable structures are presented.

  • Erythromycin was formulated as enteric-coated pellets in order to reduce degradation in stomach and gastromtestmal irritation, and to maximize the absorption in intestine followmg its oral administration. Core pellets were prepared using fluid-bed granulator with two different methods (powder layering and solvent spraying) and enteric-coated with two different coating polymers (HPMCP and Eudragit E30D). Physical characteristics md dissolution rates of core pellets and enteric-coated pellets were evaluated to optimize the formulation. Powder layering method resulted in shorter initial dissolution time than solvent spraying method, but physicochmical properties of the product were worse than solvent spraying method with respect to hardness, ftiability and density. The dissolution rate of the drug was increased with the addition of surfactants, showing concentration-dependence. The scanning electron microscopic observation of pellets revealed significant differences on the surface appearances prepared with solvent spraying method. The core pellet made with powder layering method had crystals on the surface, which resulted in poor physical properties of the pellets. The dissolution profiles of erythromycin pellets coated with HPMCP or Eudragit L30D were close to that of commercially available erythromycin enteric-coated product.

  • In general, the characteristics of plasma spray coating are strongly dependent on process conditions. In this paper, Mo and Co alloy coating layers were made by plasma spraying with different spray parameters and characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy(SEM), hardnass test, and wear test. It was found that the coating characteristics were mainly affected by phase composition of the powder, spray distance, arc current, and gas flow rate.

  • A study on induction plasma deposition with ceramic materials, yttria-stabilized-zirconia ZrO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$ (m.p 264O $^{\circ}C$), was conducted with a view developing a new method for nuclear fuel fabrication Before making dense pellets more than 96%TD., the spraying condition was optimized through the process parameters, such as chamber pressure, plasma plate power powder spraying distance, sheath gas composition, probe position, particle size and powders different morphology. The results with a 5mm thick deposit on rectangular planar graphite substrates showed a 97.11% theoretical density when the sheath gas flow rate was Ar/H$_2$120/20 l/min, probe position 8cm, particle size -75 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and spraying distance 22cm by AMDRY146 powder. The degree of influence of the main effects on density were powder morphology. particle size, sheath gas composition, plate power and spraying distance, in that order. Among the two parameter interactions, the sheath gas composition and chamber pressure affects density greatly. By using the multi-pellets mold wheel type, the pellet density did not exceed 94%T.D., owing to the spraying angle.
