This paper describes the effects of spray breakup model constants on spray and combustion characteristics in single cylinder compression engine. KIVA-3V code coupled with a CHEMKIN chemistry solver was used for numerical analysis. In this study, spray simulations and combustion simulations are studied simultaneously. Spray simulation was conducted in constant volume to reduce the effects of air-flow as swirl or tumble. The model validation was conducted and there are little difference between experiments and simulation, this differences were reasonable. In spray simulation, the effects of model constants on spray tip penetration, spray patter and SMD were studied. Furthermore, the analysis of effects of breakup variables on combustion and emissions characteristics was conducted. The results show the KH-RT breakup model constants affects spray and combustion characteristics strongly. Increasing KH model variable (B1) and RT model constants ($C_{\tau}$, $C_{RT}$) induced slower breakup time.
The aim of this work is to investigate the spray and combustion characteristics of dimethyl-ether (DME) at various injection conditions. The spray characteristics such as spray tip penetration and spray cone angle were experimentally studied from the spray images which obtained from the spray visualization system. Combustion and emissions characteristics were numerically investigated by using KIVA-3V code coupled with Chemkin chemistry solver. From these results, it revealed that DME spray had a shorter spray tip penetration and wider spray cone angle than that of diesel spray due to the low density, low surface tension, and fast evaporation characteristics. At the constant heating value condition, DME fuel showed higher peak combustion pressure and earlier ignition timing, because of high cetane number and superior evaporation characteristics. In addition, the combustion of DME exhausted more $NO_x$ emission and lower HC emission due to the active combustion reaction in the combustion chamber. The result shows that DME had a little soot emission due to its molecular structure characteristics with no direct connection between carbons.

In order to elucidate the modes of double-droplet combustion speed in premixed spray flame, the difference between flame propagation speed and droplet cluster disappearance speed are experimentally investigated using a premixed spray burner system, It was confirmed that flame speed concerned with premixed-mode combustion in the spray flame was approximately 2.0 m/s in average while mean disappearance speed of droplet clusters, which were dominated by diffusion-mode combustion in downstream of the flame, was evaluated as much as 0.45 m/s. It was clarified that both characteristics of premixed-mode and diffusion-mode combustion in spray flames are of much difference in nature, even though both speed, which are supposed to depend on local properties of the spray itself and flow conditions surrounding droplet clusters, are scattered in experiments.
The spray-wall impingement in diesel engines is important to mixture preparation, engine performance and pollutant emissions. The purpose of this paper is to study the effects of spray-wall impingement on fuel distribution, combustion and emission characteristics by using both experimental and numerical methods. To investigate the spray-wall impingement process, an impingement-chamber was designed and a visualization experiment system was also developed. The images of impinged spray and free spray were digitally recorded with an intensified CCD camera. To investigate the fuel distribution, combustion and emission characteristics of impinged spray in a real diesel engine, the fuel injection and combustion processes of an engine with impingement-chamber were simulated by CFD software. Equivalence ratio distribution results were obtained to understand the fuel distribution characteristics of the impinged spray. Some combustion and emission characteristics were also acquired and the results showed that ignition delay of impinged spray was shorter than that of free spray; NO emission of the impinged spray was significantly less than that of free spray, but soot emission of impinged spray was more than that of the free spray. This study found that the diesel engine with spray-wall impingement has significant potential to reduce NO emission.
A diesel engine is one of the major prime movers owing to its high thermal efficiency. But due to the recent attention for the environmental pollution, the emissions of diesel engine became a important problem. So it is needed to understand the characteristics of diesel spray injected into a combustion chamber. Because the diesel combustion is strongly controlled by a fuel spray injected into a combustion chamber. This study provides the informations for the diesel spray with the atmospere condition in combustion chamber by PMAS. As the result, the spray tip penetration and angle is increased with the increase of spray pressure and nozzle diameter. And the comparisions between the measured outline of the free-spray and the calculated model have been conducted and obtained the resonable results.
Simulation is performed to analyze the characteristics of turbulent spray combustion in a diesel engine condition. An extended Conditional Moment Closure (CMC) model is employed to resolve coupling between chemistry and turbulence. Relevant time and length scales and dimensionless numbers are estimated at the tip and the mid spray region during spray development and combustion. The liquid volume fractions are small enough to support validity of droplets assumed as point sources in two-phase flow. The mean scalar dissipation rates (SDR) are lower than the extinction limit to show flame stability throughout the combustion period. The Kolmogorov scales remain relatively constant, while the integral scales increase with decay of turbulence. The chemical time scale decreases abruptly to a small value as ignition occurs with subsequent heat release. The Da and Ka show opposite trends due to variation in the chemical time scale. More work is in progress to identify the spray combustion regimes.
Circumstances require improving diesel engine, and many studies have been done in constant volume chamber(CVC). Because the combustion mechanism of a diesel engine has many difficulties with non-homogeneous nature, there has been a limitation to analyzing the combustion mechanism with CVC. Studies are often given in a real engine, but also it has difficulties in modifying configuration of combustion chamber etc. To get more easy way for mote engine-like test, a rapid compression mechanism has been introduced. This study addresses to designing a rapid compression expansion machine(RCEM) driven by compressed air, and to applying it on IDI diesel combustion chamber which has a glow plug. RCEM is introduced first and its characteristics are tested, then spray/combustion characteristics of diesel spray impinging on a glow plug in RCEM combustion chamber are investigated. The results show active combustion in the system employing spray impinging on a glow plug so as to improve combustion efficiency.
The spray and combustion characteristics of n-dodecane fuel were investigated in a CVCC (constant volume combustion chamber). The selection of ambient conditions for the spray followed ECN (engine combustion network) guidelines, which simulates the ambient condition of diesel engines at start of fuel injection. ECN is a collaboration network whose main objective is to establish an internet library of well-documented experiments that are appropriate for model validation and the advancement of scientific understanding of combustion at conditions specific to engines. Therefore repeatability of the experiments with high accuracy was important. The ambient temperature was varied from 750 to 930 K while the density was fixed at around $23kg/m^3$. The injection pressure of the fuel was varied from 500 to 1500 bar. The spray was injected in both non-reacting ($O_2$ concentration of 0%) and reacting conditions ($O_2$ concentration of 15%) to examine the spray and the combustion characteristics. Direct imaging with Mie Scattering was used to obtain the liquid penetration length. Shadowgraph was implemented to observe vapor length and lift-off length at non-reacting and reacting conditions, respectively. Pressure data was analyzed to determine the ignition delay with respect to the spray and ambient conditions.
The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of the ethanol blending in diesel-ethanol blended fuels on the spray and combustion characteristics in a common-rail four-cylinder diesel engine. For the analysis of the spray characteristics, the spray images were obtained using a high speed camera with metal-halide lamps. From these spray images, the macroscopic spray characteristics such as the spray tip penetration and spray cone angle were investigated. Also, the combustion characteristics including the combustion pressure and the rate of heat release were studied with the analysis of the exhaust emissions in diesel-ethanol blended fuel driven diesel engine. It can be confirmed from the experiment on spray characteristics of diesel-ethanol blended fuels that the increased ethanol blending ratio induced the decrease of the spray tip penetration after the end of the injection. The spray cone angle slightly increased by the blending of ethanol fuel. In the experiment on atomization characteristics, the ethanol blending caused the improvement of the diesel atomization performance. On the other hand, at the same engine load condition, the increase of the ethanol blending ratio lead to lengthen the ignition delays, and to decrease the peak combustion pressure and the rate of heat release. Totally, the combustion and emission characteristics of ULSD and DE10 showed similar characteristics. However, in the case of DE20, CO and HC rapidly increased, and $NO_x$ decreased. It can be believed that 20% ethanol disturbed the combustion of diesel-ethanol blended fuel due to the low cetane number and evaporation.
