The effects of change in injection pressure on spray structure have been investigated in high temperature and pressure field. To analyze the structure of evaporative diesel spray is important in speculation of mixture formation process. Also emissions of diesel engines can be controlled by the analyzed results. Therefore, this study examines the evaporating spray structure by using a constant volume vessel. The injection pressure is selected as the experimental parameter, is changed from 72 MPa to 112 MPa with a high pressure injection system(ECD-U2). The PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique was used to capture flow variation of the evaporative diesel spray. A study on the mixture formation process of diesel spray was executed by the results of flow analysis in this study. Consequentially the large-scale vortex flow could be found in downstream spray and the formed vortex governs the mixture formation process in diesel spray.
This study was carried out to analyze the spray characteristics as a function of the operating parameters of urea injector used in Urea-SCR system of passenger diesel vehicle. Spray visualization and PDPA experiment were performed to analyze the macroscopic spray development and atomization performance of urea-water-solution. For the urea injector, the deformation of the spray head does not appear to be significant because it operates at a low pressure conditions, and the liquid core and primary droplet are observed throughout the operating conditions. No increase in atomization is seen when the operating pressure is increased, and the spray develops linearly due to poor atomization characteristics. The macroscopic spray behavior of the low-pressure urea injector is predictable through the modification of the Hiroyasu equation.

In order to investigate the spray characteristics according to diesel and bioethanol blending with biodiesel fuel, macroscopic spray characteristics were analyzed from the comparison of the effect of the injection pressure, ambient pressure and density on the spray tip penetration and spray cone angle. In addition, spray atomization characteristics were studied with local and overall Sauter mean diameter (SMD) and the contour map of SMD distribution at various injection conditions. It was revealed that the spray tip penetration of biodiesel fuels blended with diesel and ethanol was shorter than that of an undiluted biodiesel fuel at low injection pressure. However, the difference of spray tip penetration among three test fuels reduces at a high injection pressure. Increase of the ambient gas density leads to the decrease of the spray tip penetration of three test fuels. When diesel and ethanol fuels add to an undiluted biodiesel fuel, spray cone angle increases due to the decrease of the fuel density at the same ambient pressure condition. On the other hand, the droplet mean diameter decreases due to the reduction of the kinematic viscosity and surface tension.

In this study, spray-drying yield and morphological characterization of spray-dried cellulose nanofibril (CNF) and TEMPO-oxidized nanocellulose (TONC) depending on spray-drying condition and surfactant addition was investigated. As spray-drying temperature increased, the yield of spray-dried CNF was increased. The highest spray-drying yields in both nanocelluloses were found at didecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (DDAC) addition of 2.5 phr at all investigated temperatures. The spray-dried CNF was the sphere-like particle, but the spray-dried TONC showed both rod and sphere-like morphology. The average diameter of spray-dried CNF was decreased with increasing DDAC addition amount, resulting in the increase of specific surface area.

The effects of flow interaction between adjacent sprays in twin-spray system on the spatial distribution of injected liquid (water) and drop size distribution in condensable (steam) environment were carefully observed through experiments. The spatial distribution of injected liquid in twin-spray system appears to be more uniform than the simple superposition of the spatial distributions of liquid obtained from each individual spray. Drop size distribution was obtained by using the immersion sampling technique. It was found that, in the twin-spray, the larger numbers of small drops are collected throughout the spraying region due to the increase of entrainment velocity of ambient steam compared with the case of simple superposition of each individual spray. Moreover, in the overlapped portion of the twin-spray, the drop size distribution was changed also due to the collision between large drops. As a result, the behavior of twin-spray system (and eventually multiple-spray system) can not be predicted precisely by simple superposition of the behaviors of each constituting spray. Hence, for the design of multiple spray system, the effect of flow interaction between sprays should be taken into account seriously.
The effect of fuel injection spray on engine performance has been known as one of the major concerns for improving fuel economy and reducing emissions. In general, reducing the spray droplet size could prevent HC emission in gasoline engine. As far as PFI (Port Fuel Injection) gasoline engine is concerned, the mixture of air and fuel may not be uniform under a certain condition, because breakup and production of spray droplets are made in a short distance between the fuel injector and intake valve. This study, by constituting PFI gasoline spray system, was performed to study the transient spray characteristics and dynamic behavior of droplets from 2hole 2spray type injector used in DOHC gasoline engine. Mean droplet size and optical concentration in accordance with various conditions were measured by LDPA and CCD camera. Through this study, the variation of drop size and optical concentration could be used for understanding the behavior of unsteady spray was declared and the existing the small droplets between each pulse spray could be estimated caused to the development of wall film was conformed.
The swirl spray for direct-injection spark-ignition (DISI) engines was investigated using a nozzle whose exit surface shape was cut with a certain tapered angle. The reason for the change in spray's characteristics at various tapered angles was explained by the data correlating the taper and flow angles. The spray tended to shift its characteristics from the symmetric to asymmetric when the tapered angle was increased; furthermore, the spray penetration and spray cone angle were also increased. When the tapered angle was greater than the $90^{\circ}$ minus flow angle, an opened hollow cone spray was formed because of the fuel impingement against the tapered surface area of the nozzle exit. This behavior indicates that the reduction in the air pressure difference between the inner and outer spray of the spray can be achieved. This behavior also promises the potential use of the tapered nozzle for the case where the independence of the spray performance from atmospheric pressure and fuel temperature is desired.

Optical tomography was used to measure the pattern of spray cross-section. The maximum-likelihood estimation (MLE) algorithm was used to reconstruct the spray cross-section from the measured transmission rate of the spray. A swirl-type injector was used to form an optically dense spray, and the test was carried out in a high-pressure chamber, to control the pressure condition of the test site. Before the experiment, the reliability of the MLE-based reconstruction algorithm was verified, by comparing it with a conventional filtered back projection reconstruction (FBP) method. The MLE algorithm showed superior reconstruction of the image. In the spray patternation experiment, the results of the optical tomography and optical line patternator, which uses Mie scattering signal information, were compared. While measuring the cross-section of optically dense spray, the intensity of the scattering signal had attenuated to an uncorrectable level, which led to incorrect spray pattern measurement by the optical line patternator. However, reliable results were obtained by optical tomography, under the same condition. Finally, the pattern of the optically dense spray was measured at various chamber pressures, of up to 3 MPa. As the chamber pressure increased, the hollow cone-shaped swirl spray shrank, and the attenuation coefficient value of the inner region increased.
The direct injection into the cylinders has been regarded as a way of the reduction in fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. The spray produced from the injector of DIS(Direct Injection Spark Ignition) engine is of paramount importance in DISI engines. Fan-spray injector as well as swirl-spray injector was developed and utilized to the DISI engines. The interaction between air flow and fuel spray was investigated in a steady flow system embodied in a wind tunnel to simulate the variety of flow inside the cylinder of the DISI engineer. The direct Mie scattered images presented the macroscopic view of the liquid spray fields interacted with crossflow. Particle sizes of fuel droplets were measured with phase Doppler anemometer(PDA) system. A faster cross-flow field made SMD larger and $D_{10}$ smaller. The experiments show the interaction of air flow field and the fuel spray field of fan-spray. The results can be utilized to construct the data-base for the spray and fuel-air mixing mechanism as a function of the flow characteristics.
The objective of this work is to analyze the macroscopic behavior of spray and injection characteristics on the DME blended biodiesel at different mixing ratios by using spray visualization and injection rate measurement system. The spray images were analyzed to a spray tip penetration, a spray cone angle and a spray area distribution at various mixing ratio of DME by weight. The influence of different injection pressure and ambient pressure on the fuel spray characteristics are investigated for the various injection parameters. In order to analyze the injection characteristics of test fuels, the fuel injection rate is measured at various blending ratio. The variation of viscosity of the blended fuel by the mixing of DME fuel shows the improved effect of spray developments. Also, it was found that the injection quantities of high blended ratio were larger than that of lower blended fuel. Also, higher blending fuel showed a faster evaporation than that of mixing ratio of test fuel because kinetic viscosity was changed by blending ratio.
