The sol-gel method is the simplest method for synthesizing monodispersed silica particles. The purpose of this study is to synthesize uniform, monodisperse spherical silica nanoparticles using tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as the silica precursor, ethanol, and deionized water in the presence of ammonia as a catalyst. The reaction time and temperature and the concentration of the reactants are controlled to investigate the effect of the reaction parameters on the size of the synthesized particles. The size and morphology of the obtained silica particles are investigated using transmission electron microscopy and particle size analysis. The results show that monodispersed silica particles over a size range of 54-504 nm are successfully synthesized by the sol-gel method without using any additional process. The nanosized silica particles can be synthesized at higher TEOS/$H_2O$ ratios, lower ammonia concentrations, and especially, higher reaction temperatures.
Green-emitting $Zn_2SiO_4$:Mn phosphor particles having a spherical shape and high luminescence intensities under VUV were prepared by spray pyrolysis process under severe preparation conditions. The type of precursor solutions affected the morphology and luminescence characteristics of the prepared particles. The particles prepared from the clear solution by laboratory-scale process had spherical shape and dense morphology, while the particles prepared from the severe preparation conditions had rough surface and collapsed structure. However, the particles prepared from the colloidal solution utilizing fumed silica were spherical in shape and filled morphology at the severe preparation conditions of high flow rate of carrier gas, high concentration of solution, and large reactor size. The prepared $Zn_2SiO_4$:Mn phosphor particles with complete spherical shape had higher photoluminescence intensity than that of the commercial product prepared by solid state reaction.
The hollow $SiO_2$ spheres with uniform size were synthesized by a modified Stober method under the control of polyelectrolytes (PSS and PAA) as templates. This synthetic route includes the formation of spherical colloid micelle in ethanol solution, hydrolysis of TEOS under control of ammonia, and the removal of polyelectrolyte by washing or calcination. Hollow silica spheres with controllable core diameters between 100 and 270 nm and wall thickness between 15 and 50 nm have been synthesized. The influence of template solution concentration and solvent and dispersant on the formation of silica hollow spheres is studied and reported in detail.
Magnetic fluorescent silica nanotubes were fabricated using reverse micro-emulsions coupled with conventional sol-gel methods. Anodic aluminum oxide templates were used to separate spatially the magnetic and the fluorescent moieties on individual nanotubes and so prevent quenching of the fluorescence. C18 and fluorescent layers were deposited sequentially on silica. Magnetism was then obtained by the introduction of pre-made magnetic nanoparticles inside the nanotubes. The photo- and chemical stabilities of nanotubes were demonstrated through dye release and photobleaching tests. The produced nanotubes did not show fluorescence quenching upon the addition of the nanoparticles, an advantage over conventional spherical fluorescent magnetic nanoparticles. High photostability of nanotubes, magnetism and biocompatiblily make them potentially useful in bioanalysis.
Anti-reflection film was coated by using spherical silica nano colloids. Silica colloid sol was reserved between two inclined slide glasses by capillary force, and particles were convectively stacked to form a film onto the substrate as the water evaporates. As the sliding speed increased, the thickness of the film decreased and the wavelength at the maximum transmittance decreased. The microstructure observed by SEM showed that silica particles were nearly close packed, which enabled the calculation of the effective refractive index of the film. The film thickness was measured by proffer and calculated from the wavelength of maximum transmittance and the effective refractive index. The effective refractive index of the film could be controlled by a subtle controlling of the coating speed and by mixing two different sized silica particles. When the 100 nm and 50 m particles were mixed at 4:1-5:1 volume ratio, the maximum transmittance of $95.2\%$ for one-sided coating was obtained. This is the one that has increased by $3.8\%$ compared to bare glass substrate, and shows that $99.0\%$ of transmittance or $1.0\%$ of reflectance can be achieved by the simple process if both sides of the substrate are coated.
Silica powders were synthesized using emulsion solution containing water, nonionic surfactant of Triton N-57, and cyclohexane. Silica powders were prepared at low cost using inexpensive starting material of sodium silicate and ammonium sulfate. Morphology, size and size distribution were observed and determined using SEM. The powder was identified as silica by FT-IR and XRD analysis. Particle size and size distributions were affected by concentration of reactants, reaction time, and concentration of surfactant. Particle size were increased with increasing concentration of reactants and particles became dense with increasing reaction time. As R value increased, tile particle size was increased, reached a certain value and then decreased again. The silica powders synthesized under optimum condition were spherical in shape, $0.8{\mu}m$ in average particle size, narrow in particles size distribution, and well dispersed.
Silica powders with spherical shape and narrow size distribution were prepared by large-scale ultrasonic spray pyrolysis applying the droplet classification apparatus. On the other hand, silica powders prepared by large-scale ultrasonic spray pyrolysis without droplet classification apparatus had broad size distribution. Droplet classification apparatus used in this paper applied the principles of cyclone and dispersion plate with small holes. The droplets formed from the ultrasonic spray generator applying the droplet classification apparatus had narrow size distribution. The droplets with fine and large sizes were eliminated by droplet classification apparatus. The optimum flow rate of the carrier gas and diameter of the hole of the dispersion plate were studied to reduce the size distribution of the silica powders prepared by large-scale ultrasonic spray pyrolysis. The size distribution of the silica powders prepared by large-scale ultrasonic spray pyrolysis at the optimum preparation conditions was 0.76.
The effects of radial heat and $H_2O$ diffusion on the evolution of silica particles in coflow diffusion flames have been studied experimentally. The evolution of silica aggregate particles in coflow diffusion flames has been measured experimentally using light scattering and thermophoretic sampling techniques. The measurements of scattering cross section from $90^{\circ}$ light scattering have been utilized to calculate the aggregate number density and volume fraction using with combination of measuring the particle size and morphology through the localized sampling and a TEM image analysis. Aggregate or particle number densities and volume fractions were calculated using Rayleigh-Debye-Gans and Mie theory for fractal aggregates and spherical particles, respectively. Flame temperatures and volumetric differential scattering cross sections have been measured for different flame conditions such as inert gas species, $H_2$ flow rates, and burner injection configurations to examine the relation between the formation of particles and radial $H_2O$ diffusion. The comparisons of oxidation and flame hydrolysis have also been made for various $H_2$ flow rates using $N_2$ or $O_2$ as a carrier gas. Results indicate that the role of oxidation becomes dominant as both carrier gas($O_2$) and $H_2$ flow rates increases since the radial heat diffusion precedes $H_2O$ diffusion in coflow flames used in this study. The effect of carrier gas flow rates on the evolution of silica particles have also been studied. When using $N_2$ as a carrier gas, the particle volume fraction has a maximum at a certain carrier gas flow rate and as the flow rate is further increased, the hydrolysis reaction Is delayed and the spherical particles finally evolves into fractal aggregates due to decreased flame temperature and residence time.
Hollow silica spheres were prepared by spray drying of precursor solution of colloidal silica. The precursor solution is composed of 10-20 nm colloidal silica dispersed in a water or ethanol-water mixture solvent with additives of tris hydroxymethyl aminomethane. The effect of pH and concentrations of the precursor and additives on the formation of hollow sphere particles was studied. The spray drying process parameters of the precursor feeding rate, inlet temperature, and gas flow rate are controlled to produce the hollow spherical silica. The mixed solvent of ethanol and water was preferred because it improved the hollowness of the spheres better than plain water did. It was possible to obtain hollow silica from high concentration of 14.3 wt% silica precursor with pH 3. The thermal conductivity and total solar reflectivity of the hollow silica sample was measured and compared with those values of other commercial insulating fillers of glass beads and $TiO_2$ for applications of insulating paint, in which the glass beads are representative of the low thermal conductive fillers and the $TiO_2$ is representative of infrared reflective fillers. The thermal conductivity of hollow silica was comparable to that of the glass beads and the total solar reflectivity was higher than that of $TiO_2$.
