  • A failed spent fuel rod with 53,000 MWd/tU from a nuclear power plant was characterized, and the fission products and oxygen layer in the pellet-clad mechanical interaction region were observed using an EPMA (Electron Probe Micro-Analyzer). A sound fuel rod burned under similar conditions was used to compare and analyze, the results of the failed fuel rod. In the failed fuel rod, the oxide layer represented $10{\mu}m$ of the boundary of the cladding, and $35{\mu}m$ of the region outside the cladding. By comparison, in the sound fuel rod, the oxide layer was $8{\mu}m$, observed in the cladding boundary region. The cladding inner surface corrosion and the resulting fuel-cladding bonding were investigated using an EPMA. Zirconium existed in the bonding layer of the (U, Zr)O compound beyond the pellet cladding interaction gap of $20{\mu}m$, and composition of UZr2O3 was observed in the failed fuel rod. This paper presents the results of the EPMA examination of a spent fuel specimen, and a technique to analyze fission products in the pellet-clad mechanical interaction region.

  • Image processing methods for an extraction of a nuclear fuel rod image and visualization methods of the RGB color data were studied with a sectional image of spent fuel assembly. The fuel rod images could be extracted by using a histogram analysis, an edge detection and RGB rotor data. In these results, a size of the spent fuel assembly could be measured by using a histogram analysis method and a shape of the spent fuel rod could be observed by using an edge detection method. Finally, a various analyses were established for status of the spent fuel assembly by realized various 3D images for the color data in an image of a spent fuel assembly.

  • Rod consolidation is a method of increasing spent nuclear fuel storage capacity by disassembling fuel assemblies thus storing the fuel rods in a tighter array. It involves some basic operations which closely resemble to the material handling of a manufacturing process. But all the operations must be controlled remotely in shielded environment from outside due to the highly radioactive nature of the workpiece. In this study the status of the rod consolidation technology in other countries has been surveyed and a feasibility study for the conceptual design of this process have been made.

  • In this paper, to increase the utilization of uranium resources contained in the spent fuel, the spent fuel is reused. for this, the spent fuel is dismantled or spent fuel rod is extracted from the spent fuel assembly. Therefore, to achieve the performance of compacting the spent fuel assembly, we proposed the controller consisting of adaptive and fuzzy with teaming algorithm. In order to show the performance of proposed algorithm compares, we compared the controller with conventional controller in plant.

  • During demonstrations of a process conditioning spent nuclear fuels, it is necessary to transport and handle Spent fuel road cuts from Post Irradiation Examination facility to Slitting device in The hot cell. the spent fuel pellets which are highly radioactive materials are separated with its clad and are fed into the next conditioning process. For this, a spent fuel rod, 3.5 m long, is cut by 25 cm long which is suitable length for the decladding process. These rod-cuts are packed into the capsule and are moved to the ACPF(Advanced spent nuclear fuel Conditioning Process Facility). In the ACPF, Once the capsule is unloaded in the ACPF, Capsule is taken out one-by-one and installed on the decladding device. In these processes, the crushed spent fuel pellet can be scattered inside the facilities and thus it contaminate the hot cell. In this paper, we developed the specially designed transportation and storage device for spent nuclear fuel capsules.

  • During demonstrations of a process conditioning spent nuclear fuels, it may be necessary to transport and handle Spent fuel road cuts from Post Irradiation Examination facility to Slitting device in The hot cell. It may be not easy to transport spent fuel rod cuts because rod cuts are high radioactive materials. For this purpose, we have developed a capsule for transporting and handling high radioactive materials. We have analyzed conditions of a hot cell and requirements of the device, designed and manufactured The prototype of the device, and done some performance tests. From the tests, it has been shown that transportation and handling without scattering nuclear material was smooth but the weight of capsule was heavy. These result will be reflected to a design of the improved transportation and handling device which will be used during demonstrations.

  • The Leaking Fuel Experiment test facility was designed to simulate the activity release from spent leaking fuel rods under steady state and transient conditions in the spent fuel pool. The experimental rig included an electrically heated fuel rod with different defects and a cooling system. The fission product transport was simulated by potassium-chloride. The conductivity changes of the water in the cooling system were measured to provide information about the amount of released solution. Defects of different sizes and positions were applied, together with a wide range of rod powers to simulate decay heat. The produced data can be used for predicting the activity release from leaking fuel under storage conditions and for the interpretation of fuel examination procedures.

  • The spent fuel stored in the pool is vulnerable to external impacts, since the severe reactor conditions degrade the structural integrity of the fuel. Therefore an accident during shipping and handling should be considered. In an extreme case, the fuel assembly drop can be happened accidentally during handling the nuclear fuel in the spent fuel pool. The rod failure during such drop accident can be evaluated by calculating the impact force acting on the fuel assembly at the bottom of the spent fuel pool. The impact force can be evaluated with the impact velocity at the bottom of the spent fuel pool. Since fuel rods occupies most of weight and volume of a nuclear fuel assembly, the information of the rods are important to estimate the hydraulic resistance force. In this study, the hydraulic force acting on the $3{\times}3$ short rod bundle model during the drop accident is calculated, and the result is verified by comparing the numerical simulations. The methodology suggested by this study is expected to be useful for evaluating the integrity of the spent fuel.

  • Slitting device is equipment to separate spent fuel of 250 mm rod cut pellets and hull in order to supply required $UO_2$ pellets through the dry pulverizing/mixing device. For development of its device, We have analyzed slitting programs so that the existing device is modified an appropriate scale in the advanced spent fuel conditioning process. The results of the analysis, we added the automatic separation function of pellets and hull, After slitting. Also, we have concentrated on reducing the operation time so that the support and the body of a slitting blade could have been established in the single structure to be easily maintained. It is based on a design and manufacture of a testing device and we have performed an efficiency evaluation. We have analyzed the results of efficiency tests of the slitting device and get the specification of the slitting device. we complete the basic design of the slitting device by using of these data. Therefore, We apply to a basic data when manufacturing a slitting device.

  • For several decades, many countries operating nuclear power plants have been studying the various disposal alternatives to dispose of the spent nuclear fuel or high-level radioactive waste safely. In this paper, as a direct disposal of spent nuclear fuels for deep geological disposal concept, the rod consolidation from spent fuel assembly for the disposal efficiency was considered and analyzed. To do this, a concept of spent fuel rod consolidation was described and the related concepts of disposal canister and disposal system were reviewed. With these concepts, several thermal analyses were carried out to determine whether the most important requirement of the temperature limit for a buffer material was satisfiedin designing an engineered barrier of a deep geological disposal system. Based on the results of thermal analyses, the deposition hole distance, disposal tunnel spacing and heat release area of a disposal canister were reviewed. And the unit disposal areas for each case were calculated and the disposal efficiencies were evaluated. This evaluation showed that the rod consolidation of spent nuclear fuel had no advantages in terms of disposal efficiency. In addition, the cooling time of spent nuclear fuels from nuclear power plant were reviewed. It showed that the disposal efficiency for the consolidated spent fuel rods could be improved in the case that cooling time was 70 years or more. But, the integrity of fuels and other conditions due to the longer term storage before disposal should be analyzed.
