  • Due to the rapid economic development, traffic congestion has become a dire concern in Beijing, China. Levying a congestion toll is seen as the most effective solution to the problem. Building a congestion pricing model is a crucial step in implementing a workable toll scheme. Unlike previous attempts, this study not only covers the theoretical discussion but also considers three practical issues: the speed-density relationship, the value of travel time savings, and the determination of optimal traffic volume. We estimate the speed-density relationship by regression models and the value of travel time saved through survey results. We further suggest a way through which the government could identify the optimal traffic flow by a series of trial-and-errors, without the knowledge of exact road demand structure. Finally, a practical tolling scheme is proposed for Beijing's second ring road along with some policy recommendations.

  • Shock wave model describes the propagation speed of kinematic waves in traffic flow. It was first presented by Lighthill and Whitham and has been deployed to solve many traffic problems. A recent paper pointed out that there are some traffic situations in which shock waves are not observable in the field, whereas the model predicts the existence of waves. The paper attempted to identify how such a counterintuitive conclusion results from the L-W model, and resolved the problem by deriving a new asymptotical shock wave model. Although the asymptotical model successfully eliminated the paradox of the L-W model, the validation of the new model is confined within the realm of the deceleration flow situation since the model was derived under such constraint. The purpose of this paper is to derive the remaining counter asymptotical shock wave model for acceleration traffic flow. For this, the vehicle trajectories in a time-space diagram modified to accommodate the continuously increased speed at every instant in such a way that the relationship between the spacing from the preceding vehicle and the speed of the following vehicle strictly follows Greenshield's model. To verify the validity of the suggested model, it was initially implemented to a constant flow where no shock wave exists, and the results showed that there exists no imaginary shock wave in a homogeneous flow. Numerical applications of the new model showed that the shock wave speeds of the asymptotical model for the acceleration flow tend to lean far toward the forward direction consistently. This means that the asymptotical models performs in a systematically different way for acceleration and for declaration flows. Since the output difference among the models is so distinct and systematic, further study on identifying which model is more applicable to an empirical site is recommended.

  • In order to research the relationship between the tip clearance and leakage flow of centrifugal compressor, a high speed centrifugal compressor was investigated by using CFD. A numerical study on the effect of four different rotor tip clearance sizes of centrifugal compressor, which were 0.5times, 1 times, 1.5times and 2.0times of the design tip clearance, was carried out. Efficiency and pressure ratio curves were obtained under different mass flow. The reasons of the clearance vortex and the factors of vortex size were analyzed. The result indicated that with the increase of tip clearance size, the performance of the compressor changed obviously, the performance parameters such as efficiency and pressure ratio tended to decrease obviously. While, the leakage flow does not always lead to leak vortex. The strength of the vortex increased with the tip clearance. The size of leak vortex was affected by the pressure difference between the suction side and the pressure side of blade tip.

  • This paper describes aerodynamic characteristics of an Archimedes spiral wind turbine with various angles of attack. The range of angles was controlled from $-30^{\circ}$ (clockwise) to $+30^{\circ}$ (clockwise). The rotating speed of wind turbine at the same angle of attack in both directions was different. The reason why the-maximum rotational speed was observed at $15^{\circ}$ in clockwise direction can be explained based on angular momentum conservation. Quantitative flow visualization around Archimedes wind turbine blade was carried out between $-15^{\circ}$ (clockwise) and $+15^{\circ}$ (counter clockwise) using high resolution PIV method. The relationship between drag force and rotating speeds was discussed. From these results, optimum design on yawing system of Archimedes spiral wind turbine may provide high efficiency on small wind power system.

  • The hardness of cold-forged products is in close relationship with its effective strain. This study presented the estimating method of hardness for cold-forged SKH9 products without hardness tests in view of resistance to plastic deformation using finite element code, DEFORM$^{TM}$. The flow stress equation obtained from the compression test was only used as a basic data to estimate the relationship between effective strain and hardness. In addition, this new estimating method was applied to the cold-forged product which was widely used in industrial field to show the feasibility. As a result, the predicted hardness numbers through FE simulation showed good agreement with the measured hardness numbers. It is possible to estimate the hardness not by hardness tests, but by only computer simulations for the deformed products. Also, effective strain values were possibly estimated by measuring hardness numbers, and vice versa.

  • The mechanism of ballast-flying phenomena by strong wind induced by high-speed trains has extensively been investigated by conducting wind tunnel test and field-measuring of wind velocity in the vicinity of the track. The ballast gathered from the Seoul-Busan high-speed railway track has been classified by mass and shape to find relationship between those properties and the characteristic of movement in high wind and 16-channel Kiel-probe array has been used to examine the detailed flow structure above the surface of the track. The probability of ballast-flying during the passage of the high-speed train has been assessed comparing the results from wind tunnel test and that from field-measuring. The results shows that when the G7 train runs well as the KTX train runs at 300km/h, about 25m/s wind gust is induced just above the tie and the probability far small ballast under 50g to fly is about 50% when it is on the tie. If the G7 train runs at 350km/h, the wind gust just above the tie increases to 30m/s, therefore radical countermeasure seems to be needed.

  • The relationship of growth-in defects such as crystal originated particles (COP), flow pattern defects(FPD), laser scattering tomography defects (LSTD) was investigated in Cz-Si single crystals which had different pulling speed during crystal growing. It is concluded that the density and radial distribution of grown-in defects is strongly dependent on the pulling speed. And as the generation areas of these grown-in defects in a wafer are identical in radial position, they can be generated from same origin during crystal growing.

  • The objective of study is to examine relationship between traffic flow characteristics of two lane entrance terminal and acceleration length, and to suggest the acceleration length by level of service. The relationship between the speed ratio and the distance from the ramp appeared to be a quadratic concave from. In the case of two lane entrance ramp, the acceleration length is suggested as 1.4~2.0 times longer than the acceleration length of one lane entrance ramp. It is also recommended that acceleration length for two lane entrance ramp should be designed according to the level of service at the right most lane (level of service A : 1.4 B : 1.6 C : 1.8 D : 2.0 times of the one lane entrance ramp acceleration length) on freeway.

  • ALINEA algorithm, which is one of the best on-ramp metering algorithms, was designed to control the traffic volume from on-ramp in order to maintain the optimal occupancy rate of the detectors installed downstream of the merge area. But, the reliability of occupancy rate estimated from the loop detectors, which are used most commonly in Korea, is relatively lower than other parameters such as speed and volume. Moreover, because occupancy rate depends on the length of loop detectors and site, lots of calibration work is required whenever they are installed in order to estimate the occupancy rate. Therefore, there exists room for improvement of ALINEA algorithm because only occupancy rate having some problems is considered as a control parameter in ALINEA algorithm. Practically it is difficult to measure or perceive the occupancy rate for traffic engineers and drivers. On the other hand, speed can be good alternative which can overcome the defect induced by using occupancy. In this study, occupancy based ALINEA algorithm is converted to speed based ALINEA assuming the linear relationship between density and speed.
