  • In this paper the performance of a array invariant method is evaluated for source-range estimation in horizontally stratified shallow water ocean waveguide. The method has advantage of little computationally effort over existing source-localization methods. such as matched field processing or the waveguide invariant and array gain is fully exploited. And. no knowledge of the environment is required except that the received field should not be dominated by purely interference This simple and instantaneous method is applied to simulated acoustic propagation filed for testing range estimation performance. The result of range estimation according to the SNR for the underwater impulsive source with broadband spectrum is demonstrated. The spatial smoothing method is applied to suppress the effect of mutipath propagation by high frequency signal. The result of performance test for range estimation shows that the error rate is within 20% at the SNR above 10dB.

  • This study has investigated the effects of the defects in the probe elements influence Doppler images in the medical ultrasonic scanners. This work was implemented that the quality of Doppler images depended on the extent and location of the probe element defected. The probe performance was rated in terms of the number of piezoelectric elements lost and this was studied in the experiment by electrical disconnection to the elements. The results showed that Doppler velocity became rapidly reduced as the defected elements encountered with the element group activated at the Doppler mode, not as the flow velocity. The effect of the probe defect is decreased when the defects occurred at the element group activated for Doppler mode, as was increased the number of the elements. It was observed that the higher the flow velocity of Doppler flow phantom is, the wider the spectrum of Doppler is. And the Doppler velocity soared up and the dispersion of image brightness is increased when the defected elements got out of the elements activated at Doppler mode. The result showed that TADVP(time-average-Doppler-velocity-profile) is decreased with the increase of the probe element defect, especilly in the region of high frequency. It is expected that the research of various defects of probe elements are needed, and this study can be practical tools for probe based ultrasonic QA in the future.

  • The model for the magneto-impedance of composite wires composed of highly conductive nonmagnetic metal core and soft magnetic shell was derived based on the Maxwell's equations. The Cu($100{\mu}m$ diameter)/$Ni_{80}Fe_{20}$($15{\mu}m$ thickness) core/shell composite wire was fabricated by electrodeposition. The impedance spectra for the $Cu/Ni_{80}Fe_{20}$ core/shell composite wire were measured in the frequency range of 10 kHz~10 MHz under longitudinal dc magnetic field in 0 Oe~200 Oe. The spectra of complex permeability in circumferential direction were extracted from the impedance spectra by using the derived model. The extracted spectra of complex permeability showed relaxation-type dispersion which is well curve-fitted with Debye equation with single relaxation frequency. By analyzing the magnetic field dependence of the complex permeability spectra, it has been verified that the composite wire has magnetic anisotropy in longitudinal direction and the origin of the single relaxation process is the magnetization rotation in circumferential direction.

  • Inversion of multi-mode surface-wave phase velocity for shallow engineering site investigation has received much attention in recent years. A sensitivity analysis and inversion of both synthetic and field data demonstrates the greater effectiveness of this method over employing the fundamental mode alone. Perturbation of thickness and shear-wave velocity parameters in multi-modal Rayleigh wave phase velocities revealed that the sensitivities of higher modes: (a) concentrate in different frequency bands, and (b) are greater than the fundamental mode for deeper parameters. These observations suggest that multi-mode phase velocity inversion can provide better parameter discrimination and imaging of deep structure, especially with a velocity reversal, than can inversion of fundamental mode data alone. An inversion of the theoretical phase velocities in a model with a low velocity layer at 20 m depth can only image the soft layer when the first higher mode is incorporated. This is especially important when the lowest measurable frequency is only 6 Hz. Field tests were conducted at sites surveyed by borehole and PS logging. At the first site, an array microtremor survey, often used for deep geological surveying in Japan, was used to survey the soil down to 35 m depth. At the second site, linear multichannel spreads with a sledgehammer source were recorded, for an investigation down to 12 m depth. The f-k power spectrum method was applied for dispersion analysis, and velocities up to the second higher mode were observed in each test. The multi-mode inversion results agree well with PS logs, but models estimated from the fundamental mode alone show f large underestimation of the depth to shallow soft layers below artificial fill.

  • Conventional white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for lighting applications consist of blue LEDs and yellow phosphors, the spectrum of which lacks deep red. To improve the color-rendering characteristics of white LEDs, a red quantum-dot film was applied to the diffuser plate of LED lighting. The mean free paths of the quantum dots and the concentration of the TiO2 particles in the diffuser plate were adjusted to optimize the optical structure of the lighting. The color-rendering index (CRI) was greater than 90 for most conditions, which demonstrates that adoption of the red quantum-dot film is an effective way for improving the color-rendering properties of conventional white LEDs. The angular dispersion of color coordinates could be removed by utilizing the optical cavity formed between the diffuser plate and the reflector on the bottom of the lighting, where multiple passages of the light through the quantum-dot film reduced the differences in optical path length depending on the viewing angle.

  • This paper related with the performance comparison of CCA and RMMA blind adaptive equalization in order to reduce the intersymbol interference which is occurred in channel when transmitting the 16-QAM signal, high spectrum efficiencies of nonconstant modulus characteristic. The CCA possible to improve the misadustment and initial convergence by compacting the every signal constellation of 16 by using the sliced symbol of the decision device output, namely statistical symbol, but incresing the computational cost. The RMMA possible to minimize the fast convergence speed and misadjustment and channel tracking capability without increasing the computational cost by obtain the error signal after transform to 4 constant modulus signal based on the region of signal constellation located. In this paper, these algorithm were implemented in the same channel, and the blind adaptive equalization performance were compared using the equalizer output signal constellation, residual isi, MSE, SER. As a result of simulation, the RMMA has better performance in output signal constellation, residual isi and MSE compared to the CCA, but has slow convergence speed about 1.3 times. And the SER performance presenting the robustness to the noise signal, the CCA has more beeter in less SNR, but the RMMA has better in greater than 6dB in SNR.

  • The Tamar rift valley runs through the City of Launceston, Tasmania. Damage has occurred to city buildings due to earthquake activity in Bass Strait. The presence of the ancient valley, the Tamar valley, in-filled with soft sediments that vary rapidly in thickness from 0 to 250mover a few hundreds metres, is thought to induce a 2D resonance pattern, amplifying the surface motions over the valley and in Launceston. Spatially averaged coherency (SPAC), frequency-wavenumber (FK) and horizontal to vertical spectrum ratio (HVSR) microtremor survey methods are combined to identify and characterise site effects over the Tamar valley. Passive seismic array measurements acquired at seven selected sites were analysed with SPAC to estimate shear wave velocity (slowness) depth profiles. SPAC was then combined with HVSR to improve the resolution of these profiles in the sediments to an approximate depth of 125 m. Results show that sediments thicknesses vary significantly throughout Launceston. The top layer is composed of as much as 20m of very soft Quaternary alluvial sediments with a velocity from 50 m/s to 125 m/s. Shear-wave velocities in the deeper Tertiary sediment fill of the Tamar valley, with thicknesses from 0 to 250m vary from 400 m/s to 750 m/s. Results obtained using SPAC are presented at two selected sites (GUN and KPK) that agree well with dispersion curves interpreted with FK analysis. FK interpretation is, however, limited to a narrower range of frequencies than SPAC and seems to overestimate the shear wave velocity at lower frequencies. Observed HVSR are also compared with the results obtained by SPAC, assuming a layered earth model, and provide additional constraints on the shear wave slowness profiles at these sites. The combined SPAC and HVSR analysis confirms the hypothesis of a layered geology at the GUN site and indicates the presence of a 2D resonance pattern across the Tamar valley at the KPK site.

  • In the field of neutron detections, $^3He$ gas, the so-called "the gold standard," is the most widely used material for neutron detections because of its high efficiency in neutron capturing. However, from variable causes since early 2009, $^3He$ is being depleted, which has maintained an upward pressure on its cost. For this reason, the demands for $^3He$ replacements are rising sharply. Research into neutron converting materials, which has not been used well due to a neutron detection efficiency lower than the efficiency of $^3He$, although it can be chosen for use in a neutron detector, has been highlighted again. $^{10}B$, which is one of the $^3He$ replacements, such as $BF_3$, $^6Li$, $^{10}B$, $Gd_2O_2S$, is being researched by various detector development groups owing to a number of advantages such as easy gamma-ray discrimination, non-toxicity, low cost, etc. One of the possible techniques for the detection is an indirect neutron detection method measuring secondary radiation generated by interactions between neutrons and $^{10}B$. Because of the mean free path of alpha particle from interactions that are very short in a solid material, the thickness of $^{10}B$ should be thin. Therefore, to increase the neutron detection efficiency, it is important to make a $^{10}B$ thin film. In this study, we fabricated a $^{10}B$ thin film that is about 60 um in thickness for neutron detection using well-known technology for the manufacturing of a thin electrode for use in lithium ion batteries. In addition, by performing simple physical tests on the conductivity, dispersion, adhesion, and flexibility, we confirmed that the physical characteristics of the fabricated $^{10}B$ thin film are good. Using the fabricated $^{10}B$ thin film, we made a proportional counter for neutron monitoring and measured the neutron pulse height spectrum at a neutron facility at KAERI. Furthermore, we calculated using the Monte Carlo simulation the change of neutron detection efficiency according to the number of thin film layers. In conclusion, we suggest a fabrication method of a $^{10}B$ thin film using the technology used in making a thin electrode of lithium ion batteries and made the $^{10}B$ thin film for neutron detection using suggested method.
