Simultaneous Spectrometric Determination of Caffeic Acid, Gallic Acid, and Quercetin in Some Aromatic Herbs, Using Chemometric Tools

  • The purpose of this work is the development of a method for an effective, less expensive, rapid, and simultaneous determination of three phenolic compounds (caffeic acid, gallic acid, and quercetin) widely present in food resources and known for their antioxidant powers. The method relies on partial least squares (PLS) calibration of UV-visible spectroscopic data. This model was applied to simultaneously determine, the concentrations of caffeic acid (CA), gallic acid (GA), and quercetin (Q) in six herb infusion extracts: basil, chive, laurel, mint, parsley, and thyme. A wavelength range (250-400) nm, and an experimental calibration matrix with 21 samples of ternary mixtures composed of CA (6.0-21.0 mg/L), GA (10.0-35.2 mg/L), and Q (6.4-17.5 mg/L) were chosen. Spectroscopic data were mean-centered before calibration. Two latent variables were determined using the contiguous block cross-validation procedure after calculating the root mean square error cross-validation RMSECV. Other statistic parameters: RMSEP, R2, and Recovery (%) were used to determine the predictive ability of the model. The results obtained demonstrated that UV-visible spectrometry and PLS regression were successfully applied to simultaneously quantify the three phenolic compounds in synthetic ternary mixtures. Moreover, the concentrations of CA, GA and Q in herb infusion extracts were easily predicted and found to be 3.918-18.055, 9.014-23.825, and 9.040-13.350 mg/g of dry sample, respectively.

ORIGIN AND STATUS OF LOW-MASS CANDIDATE HYPERVELOCITY STARS

  • We present an analysis of the chemical abundances and kinematics of six low-mass dwarf stars, previously claimed to be candidate hypervelocity stars (HVSs). We obtained moderate-resolution (R ~ 6000) spectra of these stars to estimate the abundances of several chemical elements (Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, Fe, and Ni), and derived their space velocities and orbital parameters using proper motions from the Gaia Data Release 2. All six stars are shown to be bound to the Milky Way, and in fact are not even considered high-velocity stars with respect to the Galactic rest frame. Nevertheless, we attempt to characterize their parent Galactic stellar components by simultaneously comparing their element abundance patterns and orbital parameters with those expected from various Galactic stellar components. We find that two of our program stars are typical disk stars. For four stars, even though their kinematic probabilistic membership assignment suggests membership in the Galactic disk, based on their distinct orbital properties and chemical characteristics, we cannot rule out exotic origins as follows. Two stars may be runaway stars from the Galactic disk. One star has possibly been accreted from a disrupted dwarf galaxy or dynamically heated from a birthplace in the Galactic bulge. The last object may be either a runaway disk star or has been dynamically heated. Spectroscopic follow-up observations with higher resolution for these curious objects will provide a better understanding of their origin.

Optical Properties of Sputtered Ta2O5 Thin Films Using Spectroscopic Ellipsometty (분광타원법을 이용한 스퍼터된 Ta2O5 박막의 광학적 특성)

  • $Ta_{2}O_{5}$ thin films were deposited by RF magnetron sputtering method under various RF power, substrates and oxygen partial pressure. Elliptic constants were measured by using a phase modulated spectroscopic ellipsometer and analyzed with the Tauc-Lorentz dispersion formula and best fit method in the range of 310$\sim$1239 nm. Also, transmittance spectra of the films were measured by UV -Vis spectrophotometer in the range of 300$\sim$1000 nm. From these data, thickness of $Ta_{2}O_{5}$ and surface layer were analyzed and changes of magnitude and shape of dispersion of optical constants according to fabricated conditions were measured. Also, to evaluate thickness and optical constants data analyzed by Tauc-Lorentz dispersion formula, the measured and analyzed transmittance spectra were compared. In result of the comparison, two spectra were in good agreement each other. Accordingly, it indicates that our ellipsometric analysis is valid.

In-situ Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopic Study during Thermolysis of Trimethylaluminum and its Adduct (Trimethylaluminum (TMA), $NH_3$ 및 TMA :$NH_3$Adduct의 열분해 반응에 대한 in-situ FTIR 분광학적 연구)

  • The thermal decomposition of trimethylaluminum (TMA) with ammonia has been investigated by in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The spectroscopic reaction cell, which permits heating interna lly up to 1100$^{\circ}C$, consists of stainless-steel hexagonal-port chamber containing two NaCl windows installed in parallel. In this work, the stoichiometric reaction between TMA and $NH_3$ is found to be completed immediately after mixing. FTIR spectra observed in the range of temperature 25∼1100$^{\circ}C$ show that TMA and TMA : $NH_3$ adduct decompose into methane as a predominant product around 500$^{\circ}C$. The assignments of the IR bands due to the gaseous TMA, $NH_3$ and TMA : $NH_3$ adduct are attempted on the basis of the published data. Furthermore, the decomposition of TMA can be described as a first-order reaction. Kinetic data about the decompositon of TMA and TMA : $NH_3$adduct will also be discussed.

  • Korean Astronomical Data Center (KADC, http://kadc.kao.re.kr) in Korea Astronomy Observatory (KAO) has constructed an archive of Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO) 1.8m telescope data. The archive is consisted of photometric (1KCCD, 2KCCD) and spectroscopic data of 400GB amount for the period of 1997 to 2002,and the first web service is made of the data from 1997 to 2001. In the search page, primary search criterion of object name or coordinates is used. Users can also refine the search criteria using parameters such as observation date, observer(s), data type, and/or instrument. The data identified from the search can be uploaded to the FTP site for further downloading in FITS format. This archive is the first DB of astronomical data made in Korea.

OPTICAL/NIR IMAGING OF AKARI NEP-WIDE SURVEY FIELD

  • We present the results from B-, R-, I-, J- and H-band observations of the NEP-Wide survey field. The NEP-Wide survey is an AKARI survey of the North Ecliptic Pole covering ~ 5 square degrees area. Our optical/NIR imaging supports the AKARI IR imaging data by providing a crucial coverage in the optical/NIR. The optical data were obtained in 2007 using the 1.5 m telescope and SNUCAM at Maidanak Observatory, Uzbekistan. The NIR data were obtained in 2008 with FLAMINGOS on the KPNO 2.1 m telescope. We used IRAF, SExtractor, SCAMP, and SWarp for reducing the raw data, I-band fringe pattern removal, astrometry, standard photometry calibration, and source detection. Our optical-NIR data reach the depths of B ~ 23.4, R ~ 23.1, I ~ 22.3, J ~ 21.05, and H ~ 20.64 AB mag at 5-sigma. Here, we present the astrometric accuracy, galaxy number counts, completeness, and reliability, as well as redshift tracks of some normal galaxies and quasars on the B - R vs. R - I color-color diagram. The photometric data are being used for identifying optical counterparts of the IR data provided by AKARI, studying their SEDs, and selecting interesting objects for spectroscopic follow-up studies.

DETERMINATION OF ATMOSPHERIC EXTINCTION COEFFICIENT AT BOHYUNSAN OPTICAL ASTRONOMY OBSERVATORY (보현산 천문대의 대기 소광계수)

  • Detailed low spectral resolution observations of the spectrum have been made for three early spectral type standard stars, HR718, HR1544, HR3454, respectively, for the wavelength region 4,300 A to 7,500 A, using the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO) Middle- Dispersion Spectrograph. These standard stars were chosen from well-known bright northern standard stars. All of the observed long slit spectral data has been reduced and analyzed using the IRAF reduction procedure. The derived extinction coefficients are compared with the other observatory result. The derived value can be used in the determination of flux calibration of BOAO spectroscopic observation. However, until the high quality data are secured from a new series of observation in the blue region and are re-analyzed together, the extinction coefficients below the 4,000 A wavelength remains unknown.

Environmental effect on the chemical properties of star forming galaxies in the Virgo cluster

  • We utilize Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR7 spectroscopic data of ~380 star forming galaxies in the Virgo cluster to investigate their chemical properties depending on the environments. The chemical evolution of galaxies is linked to their star formation histories as well as to the gas interchange in different environments. We derived star formation rate (SFR) and gaseous metallicity (e.g., oxygen abundance) of star forming galaxies. Combining with GALEX ultraviolet photometry and ALFALFA HI 21 cm data, we examine the relations between SFRs, metallicity, and HI deficiency of galaxies in various regions of the Virgo cluster. We also quantify the degree of ram pressure around galaxy using the ROSAT X-ray surface brightness map. We discuss environmental effects on the chemical properties and evolution of star forming galaxies.

A Topological Analysis of Large Scale Structure Using the CMASS Sample of SDSS-III

  • We study the three-dimensional genus topology of large-scale structure using the CMASS Data Release 11 sample of the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). The CMASS sample yields a genus curve that is characteristic of one produced by Gaussian random-phase initial conditions. The data thus supports the standard model of inflation where random quantum fluctuations in the early universe produced Gaussian random-phase initial conditions. Modest deviations in the observed genus from random phase are as expected from the nonlinear evolution of structure. We construct mock SDSS CMASS surveys along the past light cone from the Horizon Run 3 (HR3) N-body simulations, where gravitationally bound dark matter subhalos are identified as the sites of galaxy formation. We study the genus topology of the HR3 mock surveys with the same geometry and sampling density as the observational sample, and the observed genus topology to be consistent with LCDM as simulated by the HR3 mock samples.

Tyrosinase Inhibitory Activities of Safrole from Myristica fragrans Houtt.

  • Five phenylpropanoids (1-5), a benzofuran neolignan (6), two 8-O-4'-neolignans (7-8), and five tetrahydrofuran lignans (9-13) were isolated from a methanol extract of Myristica fragrans seeds. The structures of 1-13 were determined by $^1H$- and $^{13}C$-NMR spectroscopic data analyses and a comparison with the literature data. Compound 3 was isolated for the first time from this plant. All the isolated compounds were evaluated for their inhibitory activity against tyrosinase. Among them, safrole (1) showed significant inhibitions against both the monophenolase ($IC_{50}=32.11{\mu}M$) and diphenolase ($IC_{50}=27.32{\mu}M$) activities of tyrosinase. The kinetic analysis shows that safrole (1) is competitive inhibitors for both monophenolase and diphenolase. The apparent inhibition constant ($K_i$) for safrole (1) binding with free enzyme was determined to be 16.05 and $13.66{\mu}M$ for monophenolase and diphenolase, respectively.
