A Chemical Component of the Marine Alga Ishige Okamurae

  • Marine Algae of order Chordariales are rich resources of bioactive metabolites. Methanolic extracts of the brown alga /shige Okamurae exhibited potent antioxidative and butyrylcholinesterase(BChE) inhibitory effects. Bio-guided purification [solvent partition, ODS flash, silica flash, gel-filtration on Sephadex LH 20, ODS HPLC] of them gave a compound 1. Its structure was elucidated by detailed analysis of spectroscopic data of 1 and comparison of literature data. A variety of bioassay for 1 is in progress.

  • Organosilicon compound containing silphenylene unit as an eletrolyte for the application of lithium-ion batteries was synthesized by hydrosilylation method between 1,4-bis(dimethylsilylhydro)benzene and 3-[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy]-1-propene. As-prepared new organosilicon compounds containing spacer such as propyl group with ethylene glycol are synthesized to improve thermal stability and to promote conductivity. The products are characterized by spectroscopic analysis.

Preparation and Physical Characterizations of Superparamagnetic Maghemite Nanoparticles

  • Superparamagnetic maghemite nanoparticles were prepared by chemical co-precipitation, followed by a temperate oxidation stage, and investigated using FE-SEM, XRD, TGA, VSM, and M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy. Through SEM image and XRD analysis, its average particle size was found to be 13.9 nm. While VSM magnetic measurement showed typical superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature, M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectroscopic investigation revealed that non-vanishing magnetic hyperfine structure were retained. Cation distribution estimated from M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy confirmed the formation of maghemite nanophase in the sample.

  • Eight compounds were isolated from the methanolic extract of the twigs of Celtis sinensis through repeated silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. Their chemical structures were elucidated as two triterpenoids, germanicol and epifriedelanol, two amide compounds, trans-N-caffeoyltyramine and cis-N-coumaroyltyramine, two lignan glycoside, pinoresinol glycoside and pinoresinol rutinoside, and two steroids by spectroscopic analysis.

Topological Analysis of Large Scale Structure Using the Final BOSS Sample

  • We present the three-dimensional genus topology of large-scale structure using the CMASS sample of the Final SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) data. To estimate the uncertainties in the measured genus, we very carefully construct mock CMASS surveys along the past light cone from the Horizon Run 3. We find that the shape of the observed genus curve agrees very well with the prediction of perturbation theory and with the mean topology of the mock surveys. However, comparison with simulations show that the observed genus curve slightly deviates from the theoretical Gaussian expectation. From the deviation, we further quantify the primordial non-Gaussian contribution.

  • It is desirable to establish a fundamental basis of dye laser technology in korea. Except the special wavelength mirrors, all parts of the dye laser were assembled using domestically available materials and the interior technology. The characteristics of pumping light of Ar discharge tube, fluorescence light of Rhodamine 6G and output pulses of the homemade dye laser were investigated by means of CRO and spectroscopic analysis.

Coumarins and a Polyacetylene from the Roots of Angelica purpuraefolia

  • Four coumarins (1-4) and one polyacetylene (5) were isolated from the roots of Anglica purpuraefolia Chung (Umbelliferae) through repeated column chromatography. Four coumarins, isoscopoletin (1), oxypeucedanin hydrate (2), arnottinin (3) and isokhellactone (4), and a polyacetylene, (+)-9(Z), 17-octadecadience-12,14-diyne-1,11,16-triol (5), were identified by spectroscopic analysis including two dimensional NMR and mass. These compounds were examined for their anti-complement activity against the classical pathway of the complement system. However, compounds 1-5 were inactive in this assay system.

  • From the chloroform and n-butanol extracts of Selaginella tamariscina, three biflavonoids were isolated by chromatographic separation. Structures of these compounds were determined as cryptomerin B, amentoflavone and isocryptomerin by spectroscopic analysis, and amentoflavone was further identified by comparison with the authentic sample. This is the first report of isolation of cryptomerin B from Selaginellaceae.

  • Six compounds were isolated from the fruits of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus. Their structures were elucidated as (-)-sesamin, scoparone, protocatechuic acid, ursolic acid, hyperin and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural by physicochemical and spectroscopic analysis. Among them, scoparone, ursolic acid and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural were isolated for the first time from Acanthopanax species.
