  • Trace elements which are essential components of biological structures may also be toxic when present at levels above the amounts required for biological function. In our study, trace element levels were measured with furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry in 33 newly diagnosed renal cell carcinoma cases (preoperative) and 32 healthy controls. When compared with the control group, it was found that the levels of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) were higher and the levels of zinc (Zn), iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) were lower in the patient group. These changes may be important in the formation of renal cell carcinoma, a question which should be explored with postoperative comparative studies.

  • The spectroscopic behavior of catechin (5,7,3',4'-tetrahydroxyflavan-3-ol), has been studied in the presence and the absence of air using UV-vis absorption spectrophotometry and fluorescence spectroscopy. The UV-vis absorption spectrum of catechin shows a very sharp and strong absorption maximum peak at 275 nm in deaerated water. New absorption maximum peaks appeared in aerated water, as well as in basic aqueous solution, caused by the oxidation of catechin. The absorbances in the UV-vis absorption spectrum of catechin decreased when the solution was left in the dark for a long time. The fluorescence emission spectrum of catechin after a long time period differs markedly from that in freshly prepared solution; the fluorescence maxia shifted as time passes after adding catechin to the solutions. When the deaerated basic catechin solutions were left in the dark for a long time, their fluorescence quantum yields were found to be nearly zero. This suggests that the oxidized catechin molecules were seen to have slowly undergone successive chemical reactions in basic buffer solution.

  • When the bivalve fossil microstructure is observed on a thin section, the growth lines of the older specimens are mostly erased by calcite recrystallization while those of the younger are well preserved in detail. During the fossil diagenesis, the shells tend to darken gradually since the valve-forming component Ca$^{2+}$ is the replaced by the surrounding materials Fe$^{2+}$, Mg$^{2+}$, and Mn$^{2+}$. Therefore, the metallic ratio against Ca component in fossil was increased during diagenesis. The UV-Visible spectrophotometry analysis shows that the reflecting degree is low level in Cretaceous bivalve fossils in contrast to the Tertiary and Recent ones. This result suggests that the dark color in older bivalve fossils is affected by the replacement of the metal ions.

  • This study was conducted to measure the diurnal variation and behaviour of atmospheric mercury in an urban area by gold amalgamation and cold vapour atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results were as follows: 1. The Hg concentration in ambient air averaged. 21.13ng/m$^3$ for 111 determinations (C.V. 78.5) in urban area and 5.91ng/m$^3$ for 140 determinations (C.V. 21.3) in suburban area. The urban area concentration was significantly higher and fluctuated more than its rural counterpart. 2. Regression analysis of the interaction between mercury concentration and other components showed a significant correlation between mercury concentration and sulfur dioxide also, TSP were found. Mercury concentration was shown to have a similar behaviour, on the whole, with other air pollutants. 3. It demonstrated a positive correlation with sunlight (UV-ray), while it had a negative response to wind speed and humidity. Its concentration showed a tendensy to increase during calm weather specifically. 4. The Hg concentration at the Mt. Dok You inland clean area ranged from 1.33ng/m$^3$ to 2.0ng/m$^3$, with a mean value of 1.63ng/m$^3$.

  • These studies were carried out to find out some characteristic responses of biological samples under the exposure of trace metals. In animal experiment, six rats per week were killed for 6 weeks under Cd exposures and the concentrations of Cd, Cu and Zn in their organs and blood were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results were summarized as follows: In animal experiments, the concentrations of Cd in the liver and kidney of Cd exposure groups were increased, however, the values of hematocrit and hemoglobin in blood were decreased remarkably. The body weight of the Cd exposure groups showed lower trend than that of control group. The concentrations of Cd in heart, lung and testes were increased slowly during the first 2 weeks. The concentrations of Cd in their organs decreased while the rapid increase of the concentration of Cd in the liver and kidney was observed. While rapid increase of the concentra~ion of Cd in the liver and kidney was observed, the concentrations of Cd in the organs were decreased afterward and increased again while the low increase of the concentration of Cd in the liver and kidney was observed. The concentrations Cu and Zn were increased remarkably in all the organs for first 2 and 3 weeks. In the exposure groups of Cd+Cu and Cd+Zn, the liver and kidney didn't show lower concentration of Cd than that of Cd group.

  • Caffeine is an alkaloid of the methylxanthine family known as a central nervous system stimulant, temporarily warding off drowsiness and restoring alertness in humans. There is a recommended upper limits of caffeine for health because a high dose can cause negative effects. Chlorogenic acid is a natural polyphenol compound known to have an antioxidant activity. In this study, the contents of caffeine and chlorogenic acid in coffee beans from different origins(Costa Rica, Indonesia, Vietnam) were determined by using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry(LC-MS/MS). The experiment offers more selectivity and sensitivity for those compounds compared with conventional methods such as UV/VIS spectrophotometry. The average concentrations of caffeine and chlorogenic acid in coffee beans origined in Costa Rica were 15.05 mg/g and 5.33 mg/g respectively. In the case of coffee beans origined in Indonesia, the average concentrations were 13.10 mg/g for caffeine and 3.75 mg/g for chlorogenic acid. Vietnamese coffee showed that the average concentrations were 17.79 mg/g for caffeine and 1.12 mg/g for chlorogenic acid. This study can contribute to a better understanding of the contents of caffeine and chlorogenic acid in various coffee beans in order to evaluate dietary intake.

  • Kinetic of substitution of dibenzoylmethanate (dbm) for one acetylacetonate (acac) in VO (acac)$_2$ have been studied in various solvents by spectrophotometry. Under the condition [VO (acac)$_2$] 》[Hdbm], the rate law for the substitution reaction is expressed as, rate = k$_2$K[VO(acac)$_2$] [Hdbm] / (1 + K[VO(acac)$_2$]) where K = [VO (acac)$_2$dbmH] / [VO(acac)$_2$][Hdbm] and the rate constant k$_2$ corresponds to that of proton transfer from coordinated Hdbm to leaving acac- in VO(acac)$_2$dbmH.

  • $BiVO_4$ nanomaterial was synthesized from bismuth (III) nitrate pentahydrate [$Bi(NO_3)_3{\cdot}5H_2O$] and ammonium vanadate (V) [$NH_4VO_3$]. The $BiVO_4$-graphene nanocomposite was fabricated by calcining the $BiVO_4$ nanomaterial and graphene under an oxygen-free atmosphere at $700^{\circ}C$. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were employed to characterize structural and morphological properties of samples. The catalytic activity of the $BiVO_4$-graphene nanocomposite was studied for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol, 3-nitrophenol and 2-nitrophenol by sodium borohydride [$NaBH_4$]. The photocatalytic activity of the $BiVO_4$-graphene nanocomposite was demonstrated by the degradation of organic dyes like BG, MB, MO and RhB under irradiation at 365 nm. The catalytic and photocatalytic activity were studied by UV-vis spectrophotometry.
