  • Coarse clumping of solid materials within diseased biological cells can have a marked influence on the light scattering pattern. Perturbations in refractive index lead to distinct variations in the cytometric signature, especially apparent over wide scattering angles. The large dynamic range of scattering intensities restricts collection of data to narrow angular intervals believed to have the highest potential for medical diagnosis. We propose the use of an interference filter to reduce the dynamic range. Selective attenuation of scattering intensity levels is expected to allow simultaneous data collection over a wide angular interval. The calculated angular transmittance of a commercial shortwave-pass filter of cut-off wavelength 580 nm indicates significant attenuation of scattering peaks below ${\~}\;10^{circ}$, and reasonable peak equalization at higher angles. For the three-dimensional calculation of laser light scattered by cells we use a spectral method code that models cells as spatially varying dielectrics, stationary in time. However, we perform preliminary experimental testing with the interference filter on polystyrene microspheres instead of biological cells. A microfluidic toolkit is used for the manipulation of the microspheres. The paper intends to illustrate the principle of a light scattering detection system incorporating an interference filter for selective attenuation of scattering peaks.

  • To establish the Fourier-Transform Infra-Red spectrophotometry(FTIR) Direct-On-Filter(DOF) technique as a useful analytical method for quartz in respirable dust samples, an influence of the kaolinite should be corrected. Respirable dust, created in a dust chamber containing the standard material of quartz and kaolinite were collected using a cyclone equipped with a 25 mm, $0.8\;{\mu}m$ pore size DM filter as a collection medium. This study was designed to compare three methods of correction for kaolinite when quantifying the content of quartz, including the least square, the optimum choice and the spectral subtraction methods. The content of quartz in the respirable dust samples was overestimated by 6.2% when mixed with kaolinite(35.5% by weight). The content of quartz containing kaolinite(72.8% by weight) were overestimated by 32%. The spectral subtraction method underestimated the quartz content by 1.5%, while the other two correction methods, the optimum choice and the least square method, overestimated the quartz content by 1.9% to 6.4% and 0.04 to 1.1%, respectively. The results of this study are suggested that, when correcting for effects of kaolinite on quantitative analysis of quartz in respirable dust by FTIR direct-on-filter method, the least square method produce the most unbiased results be compared with those of other correction methods.

  • Design and fabrication of a TCRR (Triple-coupler Ring Resonator) filter which can provide a doubled FSR (Free Spectral Range) compared with a conventional DCRR (Double-coupler Ring Resonator) filter, are discussed. Through the use of a polymer material with a good thermo-optic property and with high contrast between core and cladding polymer, a compact TCRR filter composed of straight and curved buried waveguides of small radius is designed and fabricated. The transmission characteristics from the through and drop ports are measured using a tunable laser and a fiber array block, and the FSR is observed to be 4.4 nm, about twice that of DCRR filter, and almost the same as that obtained from the analysis using a transfer matrix method.

  • Music recordings have been digitalized such that huge size of music database is available to the public. Thus, the automatic classification system of music genres is required to effectively manage the growing music database. Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) is a popular feature vector for genre classification. In this paper, the combined super-vector with Decorrelated Filter Bank (DFB) and Octave-based Spectral Contrast (OSC) using texture windows is processed by Support Vector Machine (SVM) for genre classification. Even with the lower order of the feature vector, the proposed super-vector produces 4.2 % improved classification accuracy compared with the conventional Marsyas system.

  • This paper proposes a noise reduction algorithm using Wiener filter to remove the noise components from the noisy speech in order to improve the speech signal. The proposed algorithm first removes the noise spectrums of white noise from the noisy signal based on the noise reshaping and reduction method at each frame. And this algorithm enhances the speech signal using Wiener filter based on linear predictive coding analysis. In this experiment, experimental results of the proposed algorithm demonstrate using the speech and noise data by Japanese male speaker. Based on measuring the spectral distortion (SD) measure, experiments confirm that the proposed algorithm is effective for the speech by contaminated white noise. From the experiments, the maximum improvement in the output SD values was 4.94 dB better for white noise compared with former Wiener filter.

  • Traditionally, in multi-user multi-carrier systems, the neighboring subband will be gapped by one subcarrier, which is set as guard band to reduce multiple access interference (MAI) between neighboring subbands. The empty subcarrier for guard band will degrade the spectral efficiency of the whole system. In order to enhance the spectral efficiency of multi-user filter bank multiple carrier (FBMC) systems, a new subband allocation method is introduced, in which the neighboring subband is gapped by half subcarrier instead of one subcarrier. Meanwhile, in order to implement the proposed resource allocation scheme, an optimized FBMC prototype filter is designed to decrease the inter-subband interference to the neighboring subband. The detailed simulations about the comparison between the proposed spectrum assignment and traditional FBMC are given, as well as the performance in the different interference scenarios. The simulation results show that the combination of the proposed spectrum assignment scheme and the optimized filter has better performance compared to the traditional scheme. The proposed scheme can be used in the system which serves massive users to get higher spectrum efficiency.

  • Multi-carrier CDMA is a transmission scheme where data symbols are spread in the frequency domain with a spread code then transmitted using multiple carriers. It is robust against narrowband interference because of its long symbol duration. However, due to large sidebands of the rectangular window frequency response, subchannels spectrally overlap with neighboring subchannels, which leads to substantial intercarrier interference in a dispersive channel. In this paper, we consider a mult-carrier CDMA system where subchannel spectral containment is achiveved by M-band cosine modulated filter bank (CMFB). In CMFB based MC-CDMA, subchannel spectral containment is achieved using the filter bank of longer impulse response than that of conventional discrete Fourier transform (DFT) filter bank. We show that spectral containment feature of the CMFB based fading channel is analyzed using computer simulations.

  • The spectral representation method is a quick and versatile tool for the generation of spatially variable, response-spectrum-compatible simulations to be used in the nonlinear seismic response evaluation of extended structures, such as bridges. However, just as recorded data, these simulated accelerations require processing, but, unlike recorded data, the reasons for their processing are purely numerical. Hence, the criteria for the processing of acceleration simulations need to be tied to the effect of processing on the structural response. This paper presents a framework for processing acceleration simulations that is based on seismological approaches for processing recorded data, but establishes the corner frequency of the high-pass filter by minimizing the effect of processing on the response of the structural system, for the response evaluation of which the ground motions were generated. The proposed two-step criterion selects the filter corner frequency by considering both the dynamic and the pseudo-static response of the systems. First, it ensures that the linear/nonlinear dynamic structural response induced by the processed simulations captures the characteristics of the system's dynamic response caused by the unprocessed simulations, the frequency content of which is fully compatible with the target response spectrum. Second, it examines the adequacy of the selected estimate for the filter corner frequency by evaluating the pseudo-static response of the system subjected to spatially variable excitations. It is noted that the first step of this two-fold criterion suffices for the establishment of the corner frequency for the processing of acceleration time series generated at a single ground-surface location to be used in the seismic response evaluation of, e.g. a building structure. Furthermore, the concept also applies for the processing of acceleration time series generated by means of any approach that does not provide physical considerations for the selection of the corner frequency of the high-pass filter.

  • In this paper, a new speech endpoint detector in noisy environment is proposed. According to the previous research, the energy feature in the speech region is easily distinguished from that in the speech absent region. In conventional method, the endpoint can be found by applying the edge detection filter that finds the abrupt changing point in feature domain. However, since the frame energy feature is unstable in noisy environment, the accurate edge detection is not possible. Therefore, in this paper, the novel feature extraction method based on spectrum envelop pattern is proposed. Then, the edge detection filter is applied to the proposed feature for detection of the endpoint. The experiments are performed in the car noise environment and a substantial improvement was obtained over the conventional method.
