Investigating the cosmic evolution of the black hole mass-bulge luminosity scaling relation

  • We investigate the cosmic evolution of the black hole mass-bulge luminosity relation with a sample of 52 moderate-luminosity AGNs at $z{\simeq}0.36$ and $z{\simeq}0.57$, corresponding to look-back times of 4 and 6 Gyrs. By employing robust multi-component spectral and structural decomposition methods to the obtained high-quality Keck spectra and high-resolution HST images, black hole masses ($M_{BH}$) are estimated from the Hbeta broad emission line with the 5100A nuclear luminosity, and bulge luminosities ($L_{bul}$) are derived from the surface photometry. Based on these consistent measurements, we constrain the redshift evolution of the $M_{BH}-L_{bul}$ relation by performing the Monte Carlo simulations designed to account for selection effects. We provide implications of our results in terms of the black hole-galaxy co-evolution and discuss possible bulge growth mechanisms.

Spectral Characteristics of FBGs Inscribed in Polarization-Maintaining Fiber with Two Side Holes (두 개의 Side Hole을 가진 편광유지 광섬유에 새겨진 단주기 격자의 스펙트럼 특성)

  • In this paper, we will discuss the spectral characteristics of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) inscribed in two different types of polarization-maintaining fibers with side holes. One showed high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), narrow bandwidth and high bending sensitivity, while the other one showed insensitivity to bending due to the small size of the side holes.

STUDY OF ULTRALUMINOUS X-RAY SOURCES IN SOME NEARBY GALAXIES

  • We present the results of the spectral and temporal analysis of eight X-ray point sources in five nearby (distance < 20 Mpc) galaxies observed with Chandra. For spectral analysis, an absorbed powerlaw and an absorbed diskblackbody were used as empirical models. Six sources were found to be equally fitted by both the models while two sources were better fitted by the powerlaw model. Based on model parameters, we estimate the X-ray luminosity of these sources in the energy range 0.3 - 10.0 keV, to be of the order of ${\sim}10^{39}ergs\;s^{-1}$ except for one source (X-8) with $L_X>10^{40}ergs\;s^{-1}$. Five of these maybe classified as Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) with powerlaw photon index within the range, ${\Gamma}{\sim}1.63-2.63$ while the inner disk temperature, kT ~ 0.68 - 1.93 keV, when fitted with the disk blackbody model. The black hole masses harboured by the X-ray point sources were estimated using the disk blackbody model to be in the stellar mass range, however, the black hole mass of one source (X-6) lies within the range $68.37M_{\odot}{\leq}M_{BH}{\leq}176.32M_{\odot}$, which at the upper limit comes under the Intermediate mass black hole range. But if the emission is considered to be beamed by a factor ~ 5, the black hole mass reduces to ${\sim}75M_{\odot}$. The timing analysis of these sources does not show the presence of any short term variations in the kiloseconds timescales.

  • We investigate transmission of light in nanoscale structures. We present spatial and temporal domain measurements of the dephasing of surface plasmon excitations in metal films with periodic nano-hole arrays. By probing coherent spatial SP propagation lengths of a few f1. $\mu$m and an ultrafast decay of the SP polarization on a 10 fs timescale, we demonstrate that the SP transmission peaks are homogeneously broadened by the SP radiative lifetime. The pronounced wavelength and hole size dependence of the dephasing rate shows that the microscopic origin of the conversion of SP into light is a Rayleigh-like scattering by the periodic hole array. We have experimentally studied the dephasing of surface plasmon excitations in metallic nano-hole arrays. By relating nanoscopic SP propagation, ultrafast light transmission and optical spectra, we demonstrate that the transmission spectra of these plasmonic bandgap structures are homogeneously broadened. The spectral line shape and dephasing time are dominated by Rayleigh scattering of SP into light and can varied over a wide range by controlling the resonance energy and/or hole radius. This opens the way towards designing SP nano-optic devices and spatially and spectrally tailoring light -matter interactions on nanometer length scales.

  • We summarize the progress on the rest-frame optical spectroscopy of quasars at 3$2.5-5{\mu}m$. This spectral window has been utilized for detecting redshifted $H{\alpha}$ emission lines of our high redshift subsample of quasars. From the calculated emission line widths and luminosities we measured supermassive black hole masses using well calibrated optical mass estimators. Science topics regarding optical based black hole masses at high-z are discussed.

  • We present detailed studies of externally applicable UHF PD sensors for a metal covered epoxy barrier with a small opening of epoxy injection-hole. The sensors were attached at the surface of injection hole of a metal covered epoxy barrier. 3-Dimensional electro magnetic simulations were performed to analyze electric-field distribution of the GIS and epoxy barrier with injection hole. Sensor structures were designed and analyzed using the 3-D EM simulator then fabricated for experimental verification. Sensor performance was measured in terms of spectral response and detected peak power. Real scale GIS and epoxy barriers were used to test and measure various aspect of performance of the sensors.

Uncoupling Spectral Region in Two-Dimensional Square Lattice Photonic Crystals

  • Outside the photonic bandgap of two-dimensional square lattice photonic crystals, we found spectral regions in which light coupling from the air is forbidden. This uncoupling spectral region originates from the anisotropy of the photonic crystals. A two-dimensional square photonic crystal has a complete total bandgap (forbidden region in both TE and TM modes) with hole radius ranging from 0.15 to 0.45 times a lattice constant.
