A fracture mechanics evaluation on the fatigue crack propagation at spot welded aluminum joint in passenger car body (스폿용접된 자동차 차체용 알루미늄 박판의 피로균열진전의 파괴역학적 평가)

  • The fatigue crack propagation properties and fatigue life of two kinds of Al body panel for automobile were examined experimentally by using the plate specimen and the single spot welding specimen. The fatigue limit of spot welding specimens was lower than that of a plate specimen. The fatigue limit was similar in two kinds of spot welding specimen. The shape and size of crack propagation were observed and measured on beach mark of fracture surface. The crack propagation of surface crack specimen showed almost same tendency to that of a thick plate as almost semi-elliptical. In spot welding specimen, the fatigue crack occurred in inside surface of nugget area was almost semi-elliptical. The crack growth rate can be explained using equation of stress intensity factors.

  • The test results for water repellency of paper and paperboard according to KS M 7057 can readily be influenced by an operator's bias. In order to discard such bias, the automatic analysis program of water repellency was developed based on different shape features of a liquid trace formed on a specimen. That is, the shape of a liquid track flowing down on the specimen with an angle of $45^{\circ}$ was evaluated according to width variation between head and tail of the trace($S_{Hr}$), uniformity of a liquid flow($S_{d}$), length of long traces($L_{SHr}$), eccentricity of liquid traces($E_{i}$), and then was recognized as a specific degree of water repellency. Finally, the automatic analysis system of water repellency based upon KS M 7057 made it possible to readily measure water resistance of paper and paperboards classified into R0 to R10.

  • This study analyzes the change of Al 6061-T6 specimen surface shape when undergoing microparticle spraying and analyzes the influence of factors on the experiment. Fine particle spraying is applied to the specimen and the surface shape of the processed surface is measured through a surface shape measuring device. The measured data was analyzed by the ANOVA method to investigate the effect of factors such as particle, nozzle diameter, pressure, injection height, and injection time on the injection depth and injection diameter.

Effect of Anchorage on Strength of Precast R/C Beam-Column Joints

  • Recently, there is a great demand for precast reinforced concrete (RC) construction methods on the purpose of simplicity in construction. Nishimatsu Construction Company has developed a construction method with precast reinforced concrete members in medium-rise building. In this construction method, how to joint precast members, especially the anchorage of the main bar of beam, is important problem. In this study, the structural performance of exterior joints with precast members was investigated. The parameters of the test specimens are anchorage type of the main bar of beam (U-shape anchorage or anchorage plate) and the ratio of the column axial force to the column strength. Specimens J-3 and J-4 used U-shape anchorage and the ratio of the column axial force of specimen J-4 was higher. On the other hand, specimens J-5 and J-6 used anchorage plate, and the anchorage lengths are 15d and 18d, respectively. Experimental results are summarized as follows; 1) For the joints with beam flexural failure mode, it was found that the maximum strength of specimen with anchorage plate is equal to or larger than that of specimen with conventional U-shaped anchorage if the anchorage length of more than 15d would be ensured, 2) Each specimen shows stable hysteretic curves and there were no notable effects on the hysteretic characteristics and the maximum strength caused by the anchorage method of beam main bar and the difference of column axial stress level.

Fatigue Strength Depending on Position of Cracks for Weldments

  • This is a study of fatigue strength of weld deposits with transverse cracks in plate up to 50 mm thick. It is concerned with the fatigue properties of welds already with transverse cracks. A previous study of transverse crack occurrence, location and microstructure in accordance with welding conditions was published in the Welding Journal (Lee et al., 1998). A fatigue crack develops as a result of stress concentration and extends with each load cycle until fatigue occurs, or until the cyclic loads are transferred to redundant members. The fatigue performance of a member is more dependent on the localized state of stress than the static strength of the base metal or the weld metal. Fatigue specimens were machined to have transverse cracks located on the surface and inside the specimen. Evaluation of fatigue strength depending on location of transverse cracks was then performed. When transverse cracks were propagated in a quarter-or half-circle shape, the specimen broke at low cycle in the presence of a surface crack. However, when the crack was inside the specimen, it propagated in a circular or elliptical shape and the specimen showed high fatigue strength, enough to reach the fatigue limit within tolerance of design stresses.

  • To investigate the relationship between plane and side drape coefficient, the drape tester designed in which coordinate of projected outline of draped specimen could be recorded. By using this drape tester, the three dimensional shape, plane and side drape coefficient were obtained from coordinate of plane projected shape, and furthermore examined the tendency in changes of drape coefficient in terms of diameter of specimen, deflection angle, and bending rigidity. The side drape coefficients were constant regardless of changes in diameter of specimen. The plane drape coefficients, however, made a little difference according to changes in diameter of specimen. The experimental drape coefficient agreed well with the theoretical drape coefficient according to deflection angle. In the meanwhile, when the plane drape coefficients were regressed with the side drape coefficents, regression equation was $y=0.375x-0.002x^2+6.9\times10^{-5}x^3$. When the $\overline{\theta_s}$ is mean of deflection angle of selected points which have the longest and shortest distance from center point in the node, the theoretical drape coefficient calculated from $\overline{\theta_s}$ has high correlation with experimental drape coefficient. The plane and side drape coefficient changed linearly with increasing the bending length, $\sqrt[3]{EI/w}$.

  • The concrete-filled tube (CFT) column has the excellent structural performance. But it is difficult to connect with column and beam because of closed section. Its Solution, 2 members of ㄷchennel in which Internal diaphragm is installed were welded beforehand and the method of making Rectangular Steel Tube was proposed. According to upside and downside junction shape, Internal diaphragm suggested as symmetric specimen and asymmetric specimen. The upper and lower diaphragm of the Symmetric specimen used the same horizontal and The upper diaphragm of the Asymmetric specimen used the horizontal plate and the lower diaphragm used the vertically plate. In this research, 4 T-shape column to beam steps connections were tested with cyclic loading experiment in order to evaluate the structural capability of the offered connection. Symmetric specimens be a failure in 0.03rad from beam flange. And Asymmetric specimens be a failure in 0.05rad from column interface. The comparison results of All specimens shown similar to energy absorption capacity in 0.02rad.

  • Transmission equipment is mainly used for the XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) insulation cable for ultra high voltage power to minimize power loss. The experiment examined the partial discharge characteristics according to the insertion of the bar electrode and needle electrode into the XLPE specimen and the air voids. XLPE insulation cable manufactured by T. company and tungsten electrode material by K. company were used for specimens, by adhering conductive tape on the semi-conductive material of the lower electrode of XLPE specimen with the dimension of $16{\times}40{\times}30$ [mm] was used as negative electrode. In order to investigate the PD with ${\phi}$-q-n of XLPE specimen according to the electrode shape and the size of air voids. we examined the PD by varying the voltage after applying voltage of 3~20 kV on the electrode. Therefore, it was confirmed from the result of PD characteristics of specimen that the larger the air void than the gap between electrode (+) and electrode(-), the larger effect on the discharge when the bar electrode and needle electrode inserted into XLPE, and the closer the distance between the insulation and the needle electrode, the faster insulation breakdown.

Analysis for Strength Estimation of Adhesive Joints (접착이음의 강도평가에 대한 해석)

  • The objectives of this research are to establish the criteria of peel occurrence considering the shape of bond terminus and to compare the strength properties of some adhesive joints. The criteria of feel occurrence at the bond terminus was suggested. Peel loads of some adhesive joint(butt joint, T -shape specimen, single lap joint) were determined from tensile tests. Principal stress distributions of these joints were determined from finite element method analysis. Then, peel occurrence was estimated with intensity of stress singularity ' $K_{prin.}$' when the terminus shape was square, with average principal stress when the terminus shape was rounded. The conclusions are summarized as follows; (1) In the non-filleted model(e.g., butt joint, T-shape specimen), principal stress shows singularity at the bond terminus, intensity of stress(principal stress) singularity ' $K_{prin.}$&apso; can use as the criteria of peel occurrence at the bond terminus. (2) In the filleted model(e.g., single lap joint), principal stress doesn't show singularity at the bond terminus. Average principal stress can use as the criteria of peel occurrence at the bond terminus.'t show singularity at the bond terminus. The Magnetic Properties of Electrical Steel for Rotating Machine according to the Specimen

  • This paper analyzes the magnetic property according to the machined shape of steel material with non-oriented silicon steel (50PN470/50A470), that is most commonly used in the design of electrical equipment. Toward this end, specimens were produced and divided into Bar-Specimen (Epstein Frame Tester) and Ring-Specimen (Toroidal Ring Tester). The characteristics of the electrical Silicon steel were measured using the instruments solely dedicated to measuring each specimen. The core loss of the Bar-Specimen, which is commonly used, was found to be less than that of the Ring-Specimen. This is a very important design factor in achieving the objectives of improving the product efficiency and predicting the performance of electrical equipment. It serves as a critical point of view in order to reduce the error between design value and product value. A comparative analysis was conducted regarding various characteristics (Hysteresis, B-H characteristic, Iron loss, Minor loop, Coercive force, Residual magnetic flux density, etc.) of the electrical silicon steel considered in the design of the electrical equipment according to the specimen.
