Machining of deep holes with conventional boring bars frequently induce chatter vibration because of their low dynamic stiffness which is defined as the product of static stiffness and damping of conventional boring bar materials. In addition, the specific stiffness ($E/{\rho}g$) of boring bars is more important than the static stiffness to increase the fundamental natural frequency of boring bars in high speed machining. Therefore, boring bar materials should have high static stiffness and high damping as well as high specific stiffness. The best way to meet requirements is to employ fiber reinforced composite materials for high speed boring bars because composite materials have high static stiffness, high damping and high specific stiffness compared to conventional boring bar materials. In this study, the dynamic characteristics of carbon fiber epoxy composite boring bars were investigated. From the metal cutting test, it was found that the chatter was not initiated up to the ratio of length to diameter of 10.7 at the rotating speed of 2,500 rpm.

The effects of refining consistency and plate gap on the specific energy consumption and physical properties of liner were investigated. Higher refining consistency and narrower plate gap brought about the reduction of specific energy consumption to decrease the freeness. Refining consistency and plate gap did not affect the bulk, Taber stiffness and compression index. The reduction of freeness and/or the increase of specific energy consumption caused the decrease of bulk and Taber stiffness, but increased the compression index. The effect of grammage on bulk was not observed, but Taber stiffness and compression index were increased with grammage. The bulk was decreased with the reduction of freeness rapidly at the above 400 mL CSF, and then levelled off. It is expected that the reduction of energy consumption could be obtained from the application of higher refining consistency and narrower plate gap during refining.

PURPOSE: This study was to investigate the effects of crocodile breathing exercise on pain, muscle tone, and muscle stiffness of non-specific low back pain patients. METHODS: The subjects were 37 patients with nonspecific low back pain. The patients were divided into two groups. The experimental group (EG) performed crocodile breathing exercise and the control group (CG) performed chest expansion breathing exercise. The intervention was conducted for 10 minutes every day for a total of eight weeks. Pain was measured using a VAS. Muscle tone and stiffness were measured using Myoton PRO. Two points were measured for muscle tone and muscle stiffness. They were measured at 30mm from the spinous process of the L1 and T10 vertebra. RESULTS: Pain, muscle tone and muscle stiffness at the T10 level showed a significant decrease in both EG and CG. Muscle tone and muscle stiffness in the L1 level area decreased significantly in the experimental group but the control group did not show any difference. The only statistically significant difference was observed in the L1 muscle tone between the pre and post intervention values. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that Crocodile breathing is a good method for managing pain, muscle tone, and muscle stiffness in non-specific low back pain patients.

The objective of this research works is to investigate into characteristics of bending stiffness and failure for the ISB ultra-lightweight panel with internally structured material. The expanded metal with a crimped pyramid shape and woven metal are employed as an internally structured material. Through three-points bending test, the force-displacement curve and failure shape are obtained to examine the deformation pattern, characteristic data, such as maximum load, displacement at maximum load, etc, and failure pattern of the ISB panel. In addition, the influence of design parameters fur ISB panel on the specific stiffness, the specific stiffness per unit width, failure mode and failure map has been found. Finally, it has been shown that ISB containing expand metal with the crimped pyramidal shape is prefer to that containing woven metal from the view point of optimal design for ISB panel.

In this study, three types of synthetic fiber materials were evaluated, namely, DM20, SK78, and T147, to replace steel chains in shipbuilding and offshore fields with fiber chains as there is increasing demand for chains with lighter weights and improved usabilities. The strength and quasi-static stiffness were analyzed to select suitable yarns for the fiber chains. The durability of the yarn was evaluated by performing a 3-T (time to rupture) test as a specific tension level. The results of the experiment revealed excellent dynamic stiffness in DM20 and highest values of the windward and leeward stiffness in T147. 3-T linear design characteristic curves for a specific tension level were derived for the three types of fiber materials. The findings of this study can provide insights for improving strength and durability in fiber chain design.

The effect of refining conditions and grammage on the stiffness of linerboard was investigated. The correlations between Taber stiffness and resonance stiffness were very low due to the different measuring principle. The refining conditions did not affect sig nificantly on both Taber and resonance stiffness estimated here. This means that it is strongly recommended to find and apply the refining conditions which can reduce specific energy consumption. Taber stiffness showed very high correlation for the thickness and elastic modulus of linerboard, while the resonance stiffness showed much lower correlation. Effective thicknesses for Taber stiffness were very well fitted with measured thickness, while those for resonance stiffness depended on the grammage of linerboard.

In this paper, an experimental study on porous air bearing stiffness for ultra precision positioning system was performed. In general manufacturer provide bearing stiffness under specific air pressure, but the air pressure used in the field is different. Therefore it is necessary to know the stiffness of air bearing under the pressure used in the field. In order to know that, experimental device which can realize actual operating conditions was made. Using this device, static and dynamic stiffness of air bearing can be obtained. As a result, displacement error occurred around 1 $\mu$m at recommended load.
Recently, lightweight material is attracting attention as a solution to the problem of fuel efficiency and increasing the need for development. CFRP has been attracting attention as lightweight materials for automobile because it has a high specific stiffness and specific strength compared to steel material. CFRP have a wide range of mechanical properties depending on the laminate condition. In this paper, study on the forming analysis of double-dome model was performed considering CFRP prepreg laminate condition and coefficient of friction. After forming analysis, the result has compared with wrinkling area and vertical strain of fiber to the laminated condition. And then compared with inflow of blank to the laminate condition. Through this paper, we propose the forming analysis methods of CFRP material.
During earthquakes, regular buildings perform better than irregular buildings. In general, seismic design codes define a regular building using estimates of Storey Stiffness and Storey Strength. At present, seismic design codes do not recommend a specific method to estimate these parameters. Consequently, any method described in the literature can be applied to estimate the aforementioned parameters. Nevertheless, research has demonstrated that storey stiffness and storey strength vary depending on the estimation method employed. As a result, the same building can be regular or irregular, depending on the method employed to estimate storey stiffness and storey strength. Hence, there is a need to identify the best method to estimate storey stiffness and storey strength. For this purpose, the study presents a qualitative and quantitative evaluation of nine approaches used to determine storey stiffness. Similarly, the study compares six approaches for estimating storey strength. Subsequently, the study identifies the best method to estimate storey stiffness and storey strength using results of 350 linear time history analyses and 245 nonlinear time history analyses, respectively. Based on the comparison, it is concluded that the Fundamental Lateral Translational Mode Shape Method and Isolated Storey Method - A Particular Case are the best methods to estimate storey stiffness and storey strength of low-to-mid rise buildings, respectively.
