The full spade rudder for the high speed has advantage to prevent gap cavitation of the rudder. DSME has developed the full spade rudder and GL has carried out CFD analysis and FE analysis to confirm strength and fatigue for DSME and Owner. Necessarily, it needs to compare rudder torque & rudder force between CFD, FE analysis and full scale measurement. This report introduces the measurement method and application of strain gauge for measuring the rudder torque and rudder force for the 8,400 TEU container ship.

In recent booming up of the ship building market, the supplying of large scale casting is difficult to keep the delivery schedule for ship yard because of the restrict manufacturer in Korea. And also, it is main cause to rise-up the cost of castings. This paper describes the outline of guidance of optimizing design for Rudder Horn Casting to reduce the risk of the delivery problem to ship yard.

Recently, according to the growth of demand about large container carrier, the studies for cavitation of semi-spade rudder were increased. In spite of many effort to solve, the fundamental solution can not be found. So, the studies for full-spade rudder are increasing to solve. In Pusan national university, the studies for full-spade twisted rudder and full-spade wavy twist rudder were carried out. However, most studies are carried out in numerical analysis and the many studies of experimental comparison between each rudder are not exist. This paper describe design history of full-spade rudder (twist rudder, wavy twist rudder) for KCS (KRISO Container Ship) and compare performance of each designed full-spade rudder about resistance and self-propulsion with conventional rudder (semi-spde rudder). The measurement about designed rudder's rudder force will be performed near future.

The paper deals with the effectiveness of various special rudders on course stability of a ship. We adopted five types of rudder, such as one normal rudder and four special rudders, which contain two rudders with concave and convex strips on sides respectively, one flapped rudder, and one rudder with end plates on tips. In the circulating water channel, model test was carried out for measuring lift characteristics of the rudders in open water. And various captive model tests were also carried out for measuring the experimental constants related with helm angle and steering in hull-propeller-rudder system. From the test results, the changes in manoeuvring hydrodynamic derivatives due to adoption of normal and special rudders were predicted. Then course stability performances of a ship with normal and special rudders were evaluated and discussed. As a result, it is clarified that the rudder with concave or convex strips and flapped rudder have no effect on course stability, while the rudder with end plates improves course stability with effect. The result in this study is expected to be used usefully when the course stability is in issue and has to be improved without amendment of hull design at initial design phase or after construction of a ship.
In harbour the practical shiphandlers should have a expert knowledge of systematically reducing head-way and keeping ship's positions to the final position with confidence and under control. But now in the practical approaches we do not have any special maneuvers of controlling the ship effi-ciently regarding the headway and approaches except some existing reduction of speeds according to the Weight-to-Power Ratio, use of astern power and Rudder Cycling. Consequently this study put Woo's Super Rudder Controlling originally developed by Captain Woo, Ph. D. to practical use as a special maneuvers in the port approaches. The conclusions of this paper are drawn as follows : 1) Optimum standard and desirable controls in combination of three engine speeds with three yaw ang-les were proposed for the practical shiphandlers, 2) According to simulation of the pilotships the Super advances are 10.5 ship lengths for Full full full maneuvers, and 7.9 ship lengths for Full half maneuvers approximately, 3) Approach maneuvers to anchorages by trying Woo's Super Rudder Controlling saved about 30% of total standby time in comparison with the existing Weight-to-Power Ratio maneuvers in the Pusan and Kwang Yang ports.

It is well known that a rudder is influential devices to help ship maintain its stable performances, such as a course-keeping and maneuverability. In the procedures of a commercial ship design proper rudder dimensions (area and shape) ensuring better ship maneuverability have been settled in an initial concept design stage performed by a preceding department, without little structural consideration. It is true that there are time discrepancy between an initial design and a structural analysis stage. Therefore structural analysis results would sometimes cause a rudder to modify its dimensions. Most of these cases, however, ship design and performance tests had been finished. In this matter, only limited modifications of redder could be carried out. Besides, these could also cause bad effects on productivity. Finally, it is necessary to develop a new program considering co-relationship between an initial rudder design and a following work, a structural strength analysis, in order to enhance productivity and minimize a rate of redesign procedures.
Mathematical model of maneuvering motion for a single-screw single-rudder ship is established and several applications to the special situations of maneuvering are attempted. While, the mathematical model for twin-screw twin-rudder ship is not presented so much, because that type of ship is not popular. Lee et al. have examined the characteristics of such ship by captive model tests in 1988, in Japan. This paper proposes new mathematical models for propeller effective wake (1 -${\omega}_p$) and effective neutral rudder angle ${delta}_R$ in the case of twin-screw twin-rudder ship. And some maneuvering motionse are calculated with proposed models and compared with exact simulations.

As a part of theoretical and experimental research works for the prediction and improvement of ship's maneuvering performance, an experimental study for the optimum rudder design has been carried out. Largely, this study is composed of the investigations on three major characteristics which determine rudder performance, that is, the investigations on section shape, planform and aspect ratio, and the investigation on the special section shapes. Some practically useful design directions and conclusion for each characteristic have been derived through this study. Among special section shapes, dolphin-tail type section shape has shown a possibility of significantly improving rudder performance if utilized as the section of rudders.
The variation in the course keeping ability in relation to rudder type is investigated using simulations with 3 different types of rudders (a normal rudder, normal rudder with a plate, and Schilling rudder) under wave conditions. The simulation is developed based on an MMG model with Kijima's regression model, along with the data from Son's experiments and Kose's experiments. A 3-D source distribution method is applied to calculate the source of the external wave forces for the simulation. The coefficients of an autopilot controller that may affect the course keeping ability are also estimated from the simulations with the different rudders. The course keeping ability is evaluated by comparing the forward distances while the ships are simulated with the rudders and autopilot controller.
