  • This paper proposes a method to extract the personal information using a microphone array. Useful personal information, particularly customers, is age and gender. On the basis of this information, service applications for robots can satisfy users by offering services adaptive to the special needs of specific user groups that may include adults and children as well as females and males. We applied Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) as a classifier and Mel Frequency Cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) as a voice feature. The major aim of this paper is to discover the voice source parameters of age and gender and to classify these two characteristics simultaneously. For the ubiquitous environment, voices obtained by the selected channels in a microphone array are useful to reduce background noise.

  • The present study is mainly motivated to numerically simulate the autoignition and combustion process of a diesel spray in RCM and effects of design parameters on combustion and engine performance in the DI diesel engine using EGR. In case of the burning spray in RCM, special emphasis is given to the autoignition process coupled with the fluid mechanics and chemical reaction. Computations are carried out for a wide range of operating condition in terms of temperature, concentration of oxygen and carbon dioxide of the intake gas in the DI diesel engine. Numerical results indicate that the mixing process along the edges of spray jet has a crucial role for autoignition and combustion process. Temperature and concentration of O2 and CO2 of intake gas significantly influence the combustion characteristics and engine performance in the diesel/EGR environment.

  • This work is devoted to investigate heat and mass transfer effects on MHD natural convection flow past an inclined plate with ramped temperature numerically. The dimensionless governing equations for this investigation are solved by using finite element method. The effects of angle inclination, buoyancy ratio parameter, permeability parameter, magnetic parameter, Prandtl number, heat generation, thermal radiation, Eckert number, Schmidt number, chemical reaction parameter and time on velocity, temperature and concentration fields are studied and presented with the aid of figures. The effects of the pertinent parameters on skin friction, rate of heat transfer and mass transfer coefficients are presented in tabular form. The numerical results are compared graphically with previously published result as special case of the present investigation and results found to be in good agreement.

  • Shell structure are widely used in a variety of engineering application and mathematical solution of shell structures are available only for a few special cases. The solution of shell structure is more complicated when it has such condition as winker foundation, variable thickness and other problem. In this paper, a simple finite element method is presented for the analysis of axisymmetric several types of shell structure subjected to axisymmetric loads and having uniform and varying wall thickness on elastic foundation. The method is based on the analogy with a beam on elastic foundation (BEF), foundation stiffness matrix where the foundation modulus and beam flexural rigidity are replaced by appropriate parameters pertaining to the shell under considerations. The technique is attractive for implementation on a numerical solution by means of a computer program coded in FORTRAN language with a few elements. To demonstrate this fact, it gives good results which compare well with SAP2000.

  • In this study, reliability analyses of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) corbels based on stochastic finite element were performed for the first time in literature. Prior to stochastic finite element analysis, an experimental database of 84 sfrc corbels was gathered from literature. These sfrc corbels were modeled by a special finite element program. Results of experimental studies and finite element analysis were compared and found to be very close to each other. Furthermore experimental crack patterns of corbel were compared with finite element crack patterns and were observed to be quite similar. After verification of the finite element models, stochastic finite element analyses were implemented by a specialized finite element module. As a result of stochastic finite element analysis, appropriate probability distribution functions (PDF's) were proposed. Finally, coefficient of variation, bias and strength reduction (resistance) factors were proposed for sfrc corbels as a consequence of stochastic based reliability analysis.

  • This paper is concerns with the development of the formulae to predict deformation of curved plate due to line heating. For this purpose thermal elasto-plastic analysis has been carried out for both flat and curved plate models with varying parameters which affect the result of line heating. based on the results of numerical analysis, the formulae for predicting angular deformation has been derived through the regression analysis, which. It has been seen that the present model well agrees with the numerical analysis results and can reflect the curvature effect of plate to be heated. This paper ends with some comments on this formulae.

  • Low-grade waste heat has generally been discarded in industry due to lack of efficient recovery methods. In recent years, organic Rankine cycle(ORC) has become a field of intense research and appears as a promising technology for conversion of heat into useful work of electricity. In this work thermodynamic performance of ORC with superheating of vapor is comparatively assessed for various working fluids. Special attention is paid to the effects of system parameters such as the evaporating temperature on the characteristics of the system such as maximum possible work extraction from the given source, volumetric flow rate per 1 kW of net work and quality of the working fluid at turbine exit as well as thermal efficiency.

  • In this study, analytic solution and finite element formulation for the free vibration analysis of thin-walled circular arch, based on linearized virtual work and Vlasov's assumption, including restrained warping effect and second order terms of finite semitangential rotations, is presented. The total potential energy is derived by applying the Hellinger-Reissner principle. In this formulation, all displacement parameters of deformation are defined at the centroid axis. For the finite element formulation, the two node cubic Hermitian polynomials are utilized as shape functions. In special case, potential energy functional of thin-walled curved beam with monosymmetric cross section is derived. From this methodology, analytic solution for the free vibration of monosymmetric circular arch with simply supported is derived. In order to illustrate the accuracy of this study, various parameter studies for free vibration of circular arches are presented and compared with numerical solution analyzed by the FEM using straight beam element.

  • n optimization technique is adapted to determine the stage enclosure configuration preferred by performers. The merit function which quantifies the ease of ensemble among the performers is derived from a set of qualitative conditions recommended by researchers of hall acoustics. The ray path tracing technique based on the modified method of images is used to analyze acoustical characteristics at any locations of performers in stage enclosure. The gradient search technique is employed to find the geometric parameters which maximmize the merit function. As an example, optimum stage enclosure configuration of the trio chamber music is obtained using the computer program developed. The developed technique can be used in the design of concert hall stage and also in forming a special enclosure with movable reflecting surfaces.

  • The main purpose of this article is to describe the magnetohydrodynamic stagnation point flow of Walter-B nanofluid over a stretching sheet. The phenomena of heat and mass transfer are based on the involvement of thermal radiation and chemical reaction. Characteristics of Newtonian heating are given special attention. The Brownian motion and thermophoresis models are introduced in the temperature and concentration expressions. Appropriate variables are implemented for the transformation of partial differential frameworks into sets of ordinary differential equations. Plots for velocity, temperature, and nanoparticle concentration are displayed and analyzed for governing parameters. The skin friction coefficient and local Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are studied using numerical values. The temperature and heat transfer rate are enhanced within the frame of the thermal conjugate parameter.
