A Study on the Spatial Accessibility to the Psychiatry Department in General Hospital and Its Relationship with the Visit of Mental Patients (종합병원 정신건강의학과에 대한 공간적 접근성과 외래 의료이용 분석)

  • Background: This study was purposed to analyze the effect of spatial accessibility to the psychiatry department in general hospital on the outpatient visit of mental patients. Methods: Data was provided from the Statistics Korea and Statistical Geographic Information Service, National Health Insurance Service, Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, and Korea Transport Institute in 2015. The study regions were 103 administrative regions such as Si and Gu. The 103 regions had at least one general hospitals with a psychiatry department. The number of outpatient visit of mental patients in regions was used as the dependent variable. Spatial accessibility to mental general hospital was used as the independent variable. Control variables included such as demographic, economic, and health medical factors. This study used network analysis and multi-variate regression analysis. Network analysis by ArcGIS ver. 10.0 (ESRI, Redlands, CA, USA) was used to evaluate the average travel time and travel distance in Korea. Multi-variate regression analysis was conducted by SAS ver. 9.4 (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC, USA). Results: Travel distance and time had significant effects on the number of outpatient visits in mental patients in general hospital. Average travel time and travel distance had negative effects on the number of visits. Variables such as (number of total population, percentage of aged population over 65, and number of mental general hospital) had significant effects on the number of visit in mental patients. Conclusion: Health policy makers will need to consider the spatial accessibility to the mental healthcare organization in conducting regional health planning.

A Quantitative Evaluation of Composite Indicators : Empirical Analysis of Comprehensive Rural Village Development Project (비명시적 평가지표를 활용한 농촌정책 평가)

  • The purpose of this study is to construct a quantitative evaluation method that can analyze the policy effectiveness with the construction of a implicit composite index incorporating spatial econometrics models. In order to propose a methodological framework for the program evaluation, this study conducts an empirical analysis with the application of the Comprehensive Rural Village Development Project (CRVDP) which explicitly claims to achieve comprehensive goal of community development. The present study pays particular attention to quantifying the composite evaluation index and drawing net effect through the application of a series of spatial econometrics models. The spatial unit of the analysis is drawn at Eup-Myeon level in rural areas in Korea, and the time horizon is in between 2005 and 2010. We utilize the Korean Agricultural Census data in 2005 and 2010. Three steps of methodological processes are needed to satisfy the objective of the present study. First, we apply factor analysis to construct the composite index that represents comprehensive settlement environment in rural area. The index should be matched with the main objective of the CRVDP. Second, we apply the derived index to a series of spatial econometrics model as dependent variable. Lastly, utilizing the estimated coefficients of the econometrics models, we apply decomposition technique to estimate CRVDP's net effect from both cross-sectional and longitudinal perspectives. We find that the results of the decomposition analysis by the execution of the CRVDP are positively associated with the explicit object of the project.

  • This study determined the spatial distribution characteristics of carbon dioxide in Northeast Asia, connecting land coverage and vegetation index that have influence on concentration and distribution of carbon dioxide measured by GOSAT with GIS spatial analysis method. The results visibly showed that the spatial distribution of carbon dioxide had different patterns in dependent on the present status of land use in its surrounding area. Such high concentration of carbon dioxide was formed in developed sites like cities while forest areas showed low concentration of it. We also found that there were relatively high negative(-) correlations between carbon dioxide and vegetation, in statistically significant level. It is expected to be used as a basic data for establishing measures to reduce greenhouse gas in the future.

Spatial Distribution of Dissolved Organic Matter Compositions Upstream of Ipobo (이포보 상류 용존 유기물의 공간적 분포 분석)

  • This research investigated the effects of weir (Ipobo) construction on the dynamics and the related spatial distributions of pollutants inflowing from tributaries (Yanghwacheon and Bokhacheon). Conductivity measurements and water sampling were conducted longitudinally, horizontally, and vertically in the waterbody upstream of the area located in Ipobo. Additionally, collected water samples were used for the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) analysis and fluorescence analysis which results in the SUVA, HIX, BIX, and FI calculation and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). Consequently, the results of the Conductivity, DOC, SUVA, and HIX showed that high concentration of pollutants that were flowing from the area of Bokhacheon which was mixed along the flow of the main river. The results of the BIX and FI did not show significant difference along the river flow which represented that allochthonous and terrestrial DOM, and for this reason was dominated in the whole waterbody rather than just the autochthonous DOM. The PARAFAC results showed that the two fluorescence components, humic-like and protein-like, constituted the fluorescence matrices of the water samples. The prevailing discipline notes that the two components were inflowing from the tributaries, however, a refractory component, humic-like substances, was relatively accumulated near the weir. From the results, the dynamics and spatial distributions of the DOM are dependent on the DOM characteristics, which induces the application of a specialized DOM analysis method to investigate the effects of a subsequent weir construction on the dynamics and spatial distributions of pollutants inflowing from the tributaries.

Korean Red Ginseng extract attenuates alcohol-induced addictive responses and cognitive impairments by alleviating neuroinflammation

  • Background: Alcohol is one of the most commonly used psychoactive drugs. Due to its addictive characteristics, many people struggle with the side effects of alcohol. Korean Red Ginseng (KRG) is a traditional herbal medicine that is widely used to treat various health problems. However, the effects and mechanisms of KRG in alcohol-induced responses remain unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of KRG in alcohol-induced responses. Methods: We investigated two aspects: alcohol-induced addictive responses and spatial working memory impairments. To determine the effects of KRG in alcohol-induced addictive responses, we performed conditioned place preference tests and withdrawal symptom observations. To assess the effects of KRG in alcohol-induced spatial working memory impairment, Y-maze, Barnes maze, and novel object recognition tests were performed using mice after repeated alcohol and KRG exposure. To investigate the potential mechanism of KRG activity, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and western blot analysis were performed. Results: KRG-treated mice showed dose-dependent restoration of impaired spatial working memory following repeated alcohol exposure. Furthermore, withdrawal symptoms to alcohol were reduced in mice treated with KRG and alcohol. The PKA-CREB signaling pathway was activated after alcohol administration, which was reduced by KRG. However, the levels of inflammatory cytokines were increased by alcohol and decreased by KRG. Conclusion: Taken together, KRG may alleviate alcohol-induced spatial working memory impairments and addictive responses through anti-neuroinflammatory activity rather than through the PKA-CREB signaling pathway.

Convolution and Deconvolution Algorithms for Large-Volume Cosmological Surveys

  • Current and planned deep multicolor wide-area cosmological surveys will map in detail the spatial distribution of galaxies and quasars over unprecedented volumes, and provide a number of objects with photometric redshifts more than an order of magnitude bigger than that of spectroscopic redshifts. Photometric information is statistically more significant for studying cosmological evolution, dark energy, and the expansion history of the universe at a fraction of the cost of a full spectroscopic survey, but intrinsically carries a bias due to noise in the distance estimates. We provide convolution- and deconvolution-based algorithms capable of removing this bias -- thus able to exploit the full cosmological information -- in order to reconstruct intrinsic distributions and correlations between distance-dependent quantities. We then show some direct applications of our techniques to the VIMOS Public Extragalactic Redshift Survey (VIPERS) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) datasets. Our methods impact a broader range of studies, when at least one distance-dependent quantity is involved; hence, they will be useful for upcoming large-volume surveys, some of which will only have photometric information.

An Expert Finite Element Discretization for Time-Dependent Structural Problems (시간 종속 구조응력해석을 위한 전문가 유한요소 모델링)

  • A finite element technique for the time dependent large structural problems is presented. It is based on the error estimation for the bases of solution spaces. An a-posteriori energy norm of residual error serves as the error indicator. Mode shapes which are calculated by scaling the Ritz vectors are applied to discretize the continuous spatial domain. Finally, the performance of the proposed methods is demonstrated by solving simple examples.

  • In this paper, approximate solutions of the von Karman equations for the free flexural vibration of a transversely isotropic thin rectangular plate with two simply supported edges and two clamped edges are obtained. Applying one term Ritz-Galerkin procedure, the spatial dependent part of the equation is separated and time dependent function is found to be the Duffing's equation. Then the relation between nonlinear period and amplitude of the vibration is obtained by using averaging method which is a method of the perturbation procedure. It can be seen that averaging method is easy and agrees well with prior results.

  • This paper propose the new spatially adaptive wavelet thresholding for image denosing. The method of wavelet thresholding for denosing, has been concentrated on finding the best uniform threshold or best basis. However, not much has been done to make this method adaptive to spatially changing statistics which is typical of a large class of images. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms level dependent thresholding techniques and is comparable to spatial Wiener filtering method in matlab.

  • To investigate the neurobiological bases of learning and memory is one of the ambitious goals of modern neuroscience. The progress in this field of recent years has not only brought us closer to understanding the molecular mechanism underlying long-lasting changes in synaptic strength, but it has also provided further evidence that these mechanisms are required for memory formation. Since twenty years ago, several studies for the tests of the hypothesis that NMDA-dependent hippocampal long-term potentiation(LTP) underlies learning have been reported. Also, in the recent year, data from mutant mice showed that a potential role for NMDA-dependent LTP in hippocampal CA1 and spatial learning. Although the current evidence for the role of NMDA receptor in learning and memory is not still obvious, NMDA receptor seems to act as a critical switch for activation of a cascade of events that underlie synaptic plasticity.
