  • Detection of mesoscale oceanic eddies using satellite data can utilize various ocean parameters such as sea surface temperature (SST), chlorophyll-a pigment concentration in phytoplankton, and sea level altimetry measurements. Observation methods vary for each satellite dataset, as it is obtained using different temporal and spatial resolution, and optimized data processing. Different detection results can be derived for the same oceanic eddies; therefore, fundamental research on eddy detection using satellite data is required. In this study, we used ocean color satellite data, sea level altimetry data, and infrared SST data to detect mesoscale eddies in the East Sea and compared results from different detection methods. The sea surface current field derived from the consecutive ocean color chlorophyll-a concentration images using the maximum cross correlation coefficient and the geostrophic current field obtained from the sea level altimetry data were used to detect the mesoscale eddies in the East Sea. In order to compare the eddy detection from satellite data, the results were divided into three cases as follows: 1) the eddy was detected in both the ocean color and altimeter images simultaneously; 2) the eddy was detected from ocean color and SST images, but no eddy was detected in the altimeter data; 3) the eddy was not detected in ocean color image, while the altimeter data detected the eddy. Through these three cases, we described the difficulties with satellite altimetry data and the limitations of ocean color and infrared SST data for eddy detection. It was also emphasized that study on eddy detection and related research required an in-depth understanding of the mesoscale oceanic phenomenon and the principles of satellite observation.

  • Defects exist underneath the fruit skin are not easily discernable by using conventional color imaging technique in the visible wavelength ranges. Development of sensitive detection methods for the defects is necessary to ensure accurate quality sorting of fruits. Hyperspectral imaging techniques, which combine the features of image and spectroscopy to acquire spatial and spectral information simultaneously, have demonstrated good potentials for identifying and detecting anomalies on biological substances. In this study, a high spatial resolution hyperspectral reflectance technique was presented as a tool for detecting bruises on apple. The two-band ratio (494 nm / 952 nm) and simple threshold methods were applied to investigate the feasibility of discriminating the bruises from sound tissue of apple. The pixel wise accuracy of the discrimination was 74%. The resultant images processed with selected wavebands and morphologic algorithm distinctively showed the early stages of bruises on apple which were not discernable by naked eyes as well as a conventional color camera. Results demonstrated good potential of the hyperspectral reflectance imaging for detection of bruises on apple.

  • The merging of different scales or multi-sensor image data is becoming a widely used procedure of the complementary nature of various data sets. Ideally, the merging method should not distort the characteristics of the high-spatial and high-spectral resolution data used. To present an effective merging method for survey of reclaimed land using the high-resolution (6.6 m) Electro-Optical Camera (EOC) panchromatic image of the first Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite 1 (KOMPSA T-l) and the multispectral Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image data, this paper compares the results of Intensity Hue Saturation (IHS) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) methods. The comparison is made by statistical and visual evaluation of three-color combination images of IHS and PCA results based on spatial and spectral characteristics. The use of MODIS bands 1, 2, and 3 with a contrast stretched EOC panchromatic image as a substitute for intensity was found to be particularly effective in this study.

  • We present a photometric and spectroscopic study of the globular clusters (GCs) in the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4636 in the Virgo cluster. The photometry of the GCs is based on HST/WFPC2 images for the inner region and deep, wide field Washington $CT_1$ CCD images for the outer region. We investigated the color distribution, the radial number density profile, the spatial distribution, and the mean color of the bright blue GCs about the GCs in NGC 4636. We obtained spectra of the GC candidates in NGC 4636 using the Multi-Object Spectroscopy (MOS) mode of Faint Object Camera and Spectrograph (FOCAS) on the SUBARU 8.2m Telescope. We measured the velocities for 105 GCs in NGC 4636. Using the 238 GCs obtained from combining our results with data in the literature, we investigated the kinematics of the GC system of NGC 4636: the rotation, the velocity dispersion, the radial variation, and the orbit. We also investigated the distribution and the radial variation of the metallicities, ages, and alpha-elements of the GCs in NGC 4636 derived using the absorption lines. We compared the GC kinematics of NGC 4636 with those of other six gEs, finding that the kinematic properties of the GCs are diverse among gEs. We found several correlations between the kinematics of the GCs and the global parameters of their host galaxies. Finally we discuss the implication of the results for the formation models of the GC system in gEs, and suggest a mixture scenario for the origin of the GCs in gEs.

  • Among the digital halftoning, the error diffusion halftoning gives better subjective quality than other halftoning techniques. But it also makes edges of objects blurred. To overcome the defect, this paper proposes the modified error diffusion halftoning algorithm to enhance the edges using the spatial perceptual properties of the human visual system. Using the properties that the human eyes perceive not the pixel's luminance itself but the local average luminance and the information that human eyes perceive spatial variation, the proposed method computes information of edge enhancement(IEE). The IEE is added to the quantizer's input pixel and feeds into the halftoning quantizer. The quantizer produces the halftone image having the enhanced edge. Also this paper proposes the technique that the coefficients of the error diffusion filter are adapted according to the correlation among color components. The computer simulation results show that the proposed method produces finer halftoning images than conventional methods due to the enhanced edges. And the proposed method also preserves similar in edges to original image and reduces some defects such as color impulse and false contours.

  • In this paper, an 2D spatial-map construction for workers identification and avoidance of AGV using the detection scheme of the spatial coordinates based on stereo camera is proposed. In the proposed system, face area of a moving person is detected from a left image among the stereo image pairs by using the YCbCr color model and its center coordinates are computed by using the centroid method and then using these data, the stereo camera embedded on the mobile robot can be controlled for tracking the moving target in real-time. Moreover, using the disparity map obtained from the left and right images captured by the tracking-controlled stereo camera system and the perspective transformation between a 3-D scene and an image plane, depth map can be detected. From some experiments on AGV driving with 240 frames of the stereo images, it is analyzed that error ratio between the calculated and measured values of the worker's width is found to be very low value of 2.19% and 1.52% on average.

  • In this paper, a new method of feature extraction of major objects to represent an image using Vector Quantization(VQ) is proposed. The principal features of the image, which are used in a content-based image retrieval system, are color, texture, shape and spatial positions of objects. The representative color and texture features are extracted from the given image using VQ(Vector Quantization) clustering algorithm with a general feature extraction method of color and texture. Since these are used for content-based image retrieval and searched by objects, it is possible to search and retrieve some desirable images regardless of the position, rotation and size of objects. The experimental results show that the representative feature extraction time is much reduced by using VQ, and the highest retrieval rate is given as the weighted values of color and texture are set to 0.5 and 0.5, respectively, and the proposed method provides up to 90% precision and recall rate for 'person'query images.

  • We present here $UBVI$ and H${\alpha}$ photometric results of stellar sources in the bubble nebula NGC 7635. The early type members are selected from the photometric membership criteria. H${\alpha}$ photometry allows us to detect 11 pre-main sequence candidates with H${\alpha}$emission. In addition, we performed PSF photometry for the Spitzer IRAC and MIPS 24${\mu}m$ images from archive (program ID 20726, PI: J. Hester) in order to search for the young stellar objects (YSOs). Total 19 sources are classified as YSOs (7 class I, 11 class II, and 1 transitional disk candidates) in the color-color diagrams according to the classification scheme of Gutermuth et al.. Among them, 7 YSOs have counterparts in optical photometric data. These stars can be divided into two groups at given color indices. It implies that there occurred the star formation events more than twice. We would like to discuss the star formation history in the bubble nebula using the results from SED fitter (Robitaille et al.), color composite image from IRAC bands, and spatial distribution of early type stars and YSOs.

  • High-dynamic-range (HDR) rendering technology changes the range from the broad dynamic range (up to 9 log units) of a luminance, in a real-world scene, to the 8-bit dynamic range which is the common output of a display's dynamic range. One of the techniques, iCAM06 has a superior capacity for making HDR images. iCAM06 is capable of making color appearance predictions of HDR images based on CIECAM02 and incorporating spatial process models in the human visual system (HVS) for contrast enhancement. However there are several problems in the iCAM06, including obscure user controllable factors to be decided. These factors have a serious effect on the output image but users get into difficulty in that they can't find an adequate solution on how to adjust. So a suggested model gives a quantitative formulation for user controllable factors of iCAM06 to find suitable values which corresponds with different viewing conditions, and improves subjective visuality of displayed images for varying illuminations.
