The stability of the steady Rossby-Haurwitz wave (R-H wave) in the nondivergent barotropic model (NBM) on the sphere was investigated with the normal mode method. The linearized NBM equation with respect to the R-H wave was formulated into the eigenvalue-eigenvector problem consisting of the huge sparse matrix by expanding the variables with the spherical harmonic functions. It was shown that the definite threshold R-H wave amplitude for instability could be obtained by the normal mode method. It was revealed that some unstable modes were stationary, which tend to amplify without the time change of the spatial structure. The maximum growth rate of the most unstable mode turned out to be in almost linear proportion to the R-H wave amplitude. As a whole, the growth rate of the unstable mode was found to increase with the zonal- and total-wavenumber. The most unstable mode turned out to consist of more-than-one zonal wavenumber, and in some cases, the mode exhibited a discontinuity over the local domain of weak or vanishing flow. The normal mode method developed here could be readily extended to the basic state comprised of multiple zonalwavenumber components as far as the same total wavenumber is given.

In block-based lossy video compression, severe quantization causes discontinuities along block boundaries so that annoying blocking artifacts are visible in decoded video images. These blocking artifacts significantly decrease the subjective image quality. In order to reduce the blocking artifacts in decoded images, many algorithms have been proposed. However studies on so called comer outlier, have been very limited. Corner outliers make image edges look disconnected from those of neighboring blocks at cross block boundary. In order to solve this problem we propose a corner outlier detection and compensation algorithm as loop-filtering in spatial domain. Experiment results show that the proposed method provides much improved subjective image quality.

In this paper, updating schemes for the alternating-direction implicit finite-difference time-domain method(ADI-FDTD) are studied, which method has the potential to considerably reduce the number of time iterations especially in case where the fine spatial lattice relative to the wavelength is used to resolve fine geometrical features. In numerical simulations for microwave structure using ADI-FDTD, time marching scheme comprises of two sub-iterations. Two different updating equation sets for ADI-FDTD simulations are presented. In order to discuss the characteristics of those schemes especially in view of applying boundary conditions, we solved two complementary 2-D problems.

An efficient method of moments(MoM), which can lead to the analytical evaluation of the matrix elements, is proposed to analyze microstrip structures. The present method is formulated in conjunction with use of a new closed-form spatial-domain Green's functions which are derived by use of the integral formula for semi-infinite integrals of Bessel functions. It is observed that the computational efficiency such as the amount of calculation and computation speed has been improved due to the present MoM scheme by a factor of about 4 in comparison with the previous method. To validate the proposed method, several numerical examples are presented.

This study examines the accuracy of large-eddy simulation (LES) to simulate the flow around a large irregular sloping complex terrain. Typically, real built up environments are surrounded by complex terrain geometries with many features. The complex terrain surrounding The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology campus was modelled and the flow over an uphill slope was simulated. The simulated results, including mean velocity profiles and turbulence intensities, were compared with the flow characteristics measured in a wind tunnel model test. Given the size of the domain and the corresponding constraints on the resolution of the simulation, the mean velocity components within the boundary layer flow, especially in the stream-wise direction were found to be reasonably well replicated by the LES. The turbulence intensity values were found to differ from the wind tunnel results in the building recirculation zones, mostly due to the constraints placed on spatial and temporal resolutions. Based on the validated mean velocity profile results, the flow-structure interactions around these buildings and the surrounding terrain were examined.

A new adaptive alternating-direction-implicit finite-difference time-domain (ADI-FDTD) method is proposed to obtain isotropic wave propagation for all directional angles. We add the square terms of time-step multiplied by the spatial derivatives of x and y as a perturbed term to the conventional ADI-FDTD and can find the optimization coefficient of square terms of time-step to generate the minimum anisotropy. The new ADI-FDTD is also stable, even when its time-step is greater than the Courant-Friedrich-Levy (CFL) limit. The characteristic equation of the dispersion relation governing the new method is derived and compared with the theoretical and numerical results for the conventional ADI-FDTD and perturbed ADI-FDTD methods.
We study the focusing properties of a two-dimensional square-lattice photonic crystal (PC) comprising silica and germanium partitioned cylinders in air background. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) method with periodic boundary condition is utilized to calculate the dispersion band diagram and the FDTD method incorporating the perfectly matched layer boundary condition is employed to simulate the image formation. In contrast to the common square PCs in which the negative refraction effect occurs in the first photonic band without negative phase propagation, in our suggested model system, the frequency with negative refraction exists in the second band and in near-infrared region. In this case, the wave propagates with a negative phase velocity and the evanescent waves can be supported. We also discuss the dependency of the image resolution and its location on surface termination, source location, and slab thickness. According to the simulation results, spatial resolution of the proposed PC lens is below the radiation wavelength.
Slope stability analysis was conducted using remote sensing and Geoscientific Information System (GIS) as a part of natural hazard assessment around Chungju area. Landsat TM band 5 and 7 which contain more information about geological structure and geography are chosen and processed to analyse regional geological structure. Through image processing technique such as PCA, HFF, edge detection and enhancement, regional lineament can be mapped and identified. The lineament density map is constructed based on summed length of lineaments per unit area and the study area can be divided into 7 structural domains. Various factors of slope stability analysis such as geology, slope aspect, degree of slope, landcover, water shed as well as characterized structural domain are constructed as a database of GIS. Rating and weighting of each factor for slope stability analysis is decided by considering environmental geological characteristics of study area. Spatial analysis of regional slope stability is examined through overlaying technique of the GIS. The result of areal distribution of slope stability shows that the most unstable area is all over Jaeogae-ni, Hyangsan-ni and Mt. Daedun.
Bayesian inversion for gravity and resistivity data was performed to investigate the cavity structure appearing as a lava tunnel in Cheju Island, Korea. Dipole-dipole DC resistivity data were proposed for a prior information of gravity data and we applied the geostatistical techniques such as kriging and simulation algorithms to provide a prior model information and covariance matrix in data domain. The inverted resistivity section gave the indicator variogram modeling for each threshold and it provided spatial uncertainty to give a prior PDF by sequential indicator simulations. We also presented a more objective way to make data covariance matrix that reflects the state of the achieved field data by geostatistical technique, cross-validation. Then Gaussian approximation was adopted for the inference of characteristics of the marginal distributions of model parameters and Broyden update for simple calculation of sensitivity matrix and SVD was applied. Generally cavity investigation by geophysical exploration is difficult and success is hard to be achieved. However, this exotic multiple interpretations showed remarkable improvement and stability for interpretation when compared to data-fit alone results, and suggested the possibility of diverse application for Bayesian inversion in geophysical inverse problem.

The past several years have witnessed an ever-increasing acceptance and adoption of parallel processing, both for high performance scientific computing as well as for more general purpose applications. Furthermore with increasing needs to perform the complex flow calculations in an efficient manner, the use of the message passing model on distributed networks has emerged as an important alternative to the expensive supercomputers. This work attempts to provide a generic framework to enable the parallelization of all CFD-related works using the master-slave model. This framework consists of (1) input geometry, (2) domain decomposition, (3) grid generation, (4) flow computations, (5) flow visualization, and (6) output display as the sequential components, but performs computations for (2) to (5) in parallel on the workstation clustering. The flow computations are parallized by having multiple copies of the flow-code to solve a PDE on different spatial regions on different processors, while their flow data are exchanged across the region boundaries, and the solution is time-stepped. The Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) is used for distributed communication in this work.
