  • In multimedia database systems, the nearest neighbor Query occurs frequently and requires the processing cost higher than other spatial Queries do. It needs the measurement of search distance that the number of searched nodes and the computation time in an index can be minimized for optimizing the cost of processing the nearest neighbor query. The circular location property of objects is considered to accurately select the nodes which will be searched in the nearest neighbor query. In this paper, we propose the processing method of nearest neighbor queries be considered a circular location property of object where the search space consists of a circular domain and show its characteristics. The proposed method uses the circular minimum distance and the circular optimal distance, the search measurement for optimizing the processing cost of nearest neighbor queries.

  • The main purpose of this study is to suggest the spatial statistical approach suitable for the delimitation of Busan CBD. For this purpose, Getis-Ord $G_i^*$ and both of IDW (Inverse Distance Weight) and FDB(Fixed Distance Band) were applied to delimit the CBD boundary. And then, the results of the CBD boundary were compared and verified with the methodologies of the previous studies. The result of IDW accorded with the previous study relating to the delimitation of the boundary of CBD, and the result of FDB was reflecting the characteristics of the mixed-use residential of a transition zone. As a result of the land use quotient, the mixed land use of residential and commercial was highly specialized in the boundary of FDB. These results will be able to support the understanding of urban spatial structure and the effective CBD management.

  • This paper addresses the efficient processing of all-farthest-neighbors (AFN) queries in spatial network databases. Given a set of data points P={p1,p2,…,p|p|} in a spatial network, where the distance between two data points p and s, denoted by dist (p,s), is the length of the shortest path between them, an AFN query is defined as follows: find the farthest neighbor ω(p)∈P of each data point p such that dist(p,ω(p)) ≥ dist(p,s) for all s∈P. In this paper, we propose a shared execution algorithm called FAST (for All-Farthest-neighbors Search in spatial neTworks). Extensive experiments on real-world roadmaps confirm the efficiency and scalability of the FAST algorithm, while demonstrating a speedup of up to two orders of magnitude over a conventional solution.

  • Stereoscopic (S3D) displays present different images to the two eyes. Temporal multiplexing and spatial multiplexing are two common techniques for accomplishing this. We compared the effective resolution provided by these two techniques. In a psychophysical experiment, we measured resolution at various viewing distances on a display employing temporal multiplexing, and on another display employing spatial multiplexing. In another experiment, we simulated the two multiplexing techniques on one display and again measured resolution. The results show that temporal multiplexing provides greater effective resolution than spatial multiplexing at short and medium viewing distances, and that the two techniques provide similar resolution at long viewing distance. Importantly, we observed a significant difference in resolution at the viewing distance that is generally recommended for high-definition television.

  • The purpose of this study is to produce time-distance cartograms based on the various Korean transportation networks, and to analyze the spatial structure of time-distance accessibilities. For the purpose this study attempts to develop continuous area cartogram by utilizing Wolf's algorithm for creating contiguous cartogram in ArcGIS 9. The absolute physical space was transformed to the functional space indexed by time-distances along various transportation networks in Korea. We examined the differences in the time-distance accessibilities among transportation networks. This study makes a comparison between the spatial structure of time-distance accessibility of KTX network with them of existing railroad network, as well as with them of road network. In order to clarify the spatial structures of time-distance accessibilities, we restructured them on the time-distance circular diagrams and performing Multi-Dimensional Scaling analysis. Overall structure of time-distance accessibilities shows similar patterns: The time distances are shrinked a lot along the Seoul-Busan axis, while coastal parts, in particular the eastern part of the county, are shrinked relatively little via all transportation networks. The Road network affects significantly on the accessibilities of cities in Gangwon-do and Gyeonggi-do, while railway network affects on the accessibilities of cities in Jeolla-do and Gyeongsang-do in general. When we compared the time-distance accessibilities based on the 5 largest cities, Seoul appears as the most accessible city from/to all other cities in Korea. We can also find significant changes in the time-distance accessibility between KTX network and existing railroad network. Cities along the KTX network, in particular cities which has KTX stops, improved significantly in time-distance accessibilities.

  • In this study, we evaluated current raingauge network of Soyanggang dam region applying spatial-correlation analysis and Entropy theory to recommend an optimized raingauge network. In the process of analysis, correlation distance of raingauge stations is estimated and evaluated via spatial-correlation method and entropy method. From this correlation distances, respective influencing radii of each dataset and each methods is assessed. The result of correlation and entropy analysis has estimated correlation distance of 25.546km and influence radius of 7.206km, deducing a decrease of network density from $224.53km^2$ to $122.47km^2$ which satisfy the recommended minimum densities of $250km^2$ in mountainous regions(WMO, 1994) and an increase of basin coverage from 59.3% to 86.8%. As for the elevation analysis the relative evaluation ratio increased from 0.59(current) to 0.92(optimized) resulting an obvious improvement.

  • This paper proposes a novel method for visualizing the thickness and clearance of 3D objects in a polyhedral representation. The proposed method uses the distance field of the objects in the visualization. A parallel algorithm is developed for constructing the distance field of polyhedral objects using the GPU. The distance between a voxel and the surface polygons of the model is computed many times in the distance field construction. Similar sets of polygons are usually selected as close polygons for close voxels. By using this spatial coherence, a parallel algorithm is designed to compute the distances between a cluster of close voxels and the polygons selected by the culling operation so that the fast shared memory mechanism of the GPU can be fully utilized. The thickness/clearance of the objects is visualized by distributing points on the visible surfaces of the objects and painting them with a unique color corresponding to the thickness/clearance values at those points. A modified ray casting method is developed for computing the thickness/clearance using the distance field of the objects. A system based on these algorithms can compute the distance field of complex objects within a few minutes for most cases. After the distance field construction, thickness/clearance visualization at a near interactive rate is achieved.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the spatial dose according to the distance by location of medical workers when using a mobile X-ray fluoroscopy device in the operating room through a simulation experiment. The MCNPX program was used for the simulation, and the location of medical workers was set around the operating table, and the spatial dose distribution according to the distance and changes in imaging conditions was evaluated. As a result, The highest score was 2.74×10-4 mGy, 2.72×10-4 mGy, and 1.18×10-4 mGy based on the 10 cm distance from the operating table. Spatial dose depending on the distance 100cm, A point 5.15×10-5 mGy is decreased 19% of 10cm, D point 5.12×10-5 mGy, 19 % of 10cm, and G pint, 1.73×10-5 mGy is reduced by 15% of 10cm. Based on this study, medical-related workers directly or indirectly participating in surgery carry potential risks of radiation exposure during surgery, but there are difficulties in radiation protection due to the nature of their work. Therefore, efforts to reduce exposure suitable for the operating room environment will be required.
