Closing switch, key component of pulsed power system, is constructed simply and used frequently due to the easy control and manufacture of one. The kind of one are spark-gap, triggered vacuum switch, pseudo-spark switch and INPIStron. But the electrode of spark gap switch is damaged with the hot spot by Z-pinch and then the life of one become short. INPIStron with inverse pinch effect has long life but it is difficult trigger system to provide uniform discharge between cathode and anode. In this paper, the design and manufacturing of INPIStron with gas puffing trigger method in order to supply uniform discharge inter-electrode and the performance of the developed INPIStron applied to 500[kA]-2[MJ] pulsed power system is presented.
A Tesla coil is an electrical resonant transformer circuit invented by Nikola Tesla in 1891. It is used to produce high-voltage, low-current, high frequency alternating-current electricity. Tesla coil can generate a long streamer with several million volts of electricity as a high voltage device. It is basically consists of a voltage transformer, high voltage capacitor, spark gap, primary coil, secondary coil and toroid. It is difficult to appear in the output size of the streamer is controlled by the spark gap. The general decision method of the length of streamer is to display the electric output in accordance with the design specifications in initial development plan. Design specifications and the electric output is determined by the application of facilities. In this paper the spark gap is replaced with periodic switching semiconductor device to control output voltage easily in order to apply overvoltage protective circuit due to a secondary coil and a performance test. In these days, their main use is for entertainment and educational displays of the museum, although small coils are still used as leak detectors for high vacuum systems.
Knock and misfire, kinds of abnormal combustion, are highly undesirable effect on the internal combustion engine. So, it is important to detect these avnormal combuition and control the ignition timing etc. to avoid these mal-effect factors in real engine system. In this study, the system which detects the knock and the misfire using by spark plug is presented. This system is based on the effect of modulation breakdown voltage(BDV) between the spark gaps. The voltage drop between spark plug electrodes, when an electrical breakdown is initiated, depends on the temperature and pressure in combustion chamber. So, we can detect knock and misfire that produce changes in gas temperature and pressure (consequently, its density) using by BDV signal change which carries information about the character of combustion.
This paper presents Pspice modeling methods for spark gaps and ZnO varistors and describes the application for the two-stage surge suppression circuit which was composed of the nonlinear components. The simulation modelings of nonlinear components were conducted on the basis of the voltage and current curves measured by the impulse current with the time-to-crest of $1~50 \mus$ and the impulse voltage with the rate of the time-to-crest of 10, 100 and 1000 V/\mus$. The firing voltages of the spark gap increased with increasing the rate of the time-to-crest of impulse voltage and the measured data were in good agreement with the simulated data. The I-V curves of the ZnO varistor were measured by applying the impulse currents of which time-to-crests range from 1 to $50 \mus$ and peak amplitudes from 10 A to 2 kA. The simulation modeling was based on the I-V curves replotted by taking away the inductive effects of the test circuit and leads. The meximum difference between the measured and calculated data was of the order of 3%. Also the two-stage surge suppression circuit made of the spark gap and the ZnO varistor was investigated with the impulse voltage of $10/1000\mus$$mutextrm{s}$ wave shape. The overall agreement between the theoretical and experimental results seems to be acceptable. As a consequence, it was known that the proposed simulation techniques could effectively be used to design the surge suppression circuits combined with nonlinear components.
A spark discharge aerosol generator using air as a carrier gas has successfully been applied to silver nanoparticle production. The spark discharge between two silver electrodes, which was periodically obtained by discharging the capacitor, produced sufficient high temperatures to evaporate a small fraction of the silver electrodes. The silver vapor was subsequently supersaturated by rapid cooling and condensed to silver nanoparticles by nucleation and condensation. The morphology of the generated particles observed by transmission electron microscope was spherical. The element composition of the nanoparticles was silver, which was determined by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The crystal phase of the particles spark-generated under air atmosphere was composed of silver and silver oxides phase, which was determined by Xray diffraction analysis. While the nanoparticles generated under nitrogen atmosphere had only silver phase. This XRD data indicates that some fraction of the evaporated silver vapor could be oxidized in air atmosphere by the reaction with oxygen. A stable operation of the spark discharge generator has been achieved. The size and concentration of the particles can be easily controlled by altering the repetition frequency, capacitance, gap distance and flow rate of the spark discharge system.
In this study, we designed a 'spark in liquid' system. The spark discharge between two electrodes were used to generate particles by using sufficient temperature to evaporate a part of electrodes. The power supply system provides a continuous spark discharge by discharging of the capacitor to ionize the electrodes in liquid. The DC spark discharge system operates with 1-10 kV voltage. Processed copper and graphite rods were used to both electrodes with 1-3 mm diameter. There are several variables which can control the particle size and concentration such as gap distance between electrodes, applied voltage, operating liquid temperature, electrode type and liquid type. So we controlled these variables to confirm the change of particle size distribution and concentration of particles contained in liquid as wt%. 'spark in liquid' system is expected to apply nanoink by control of concentration with analysis of characteristics.
A constant volume combustion chamber is used to investigate the flame kernel development of gasoline air mixtures under various ignition systems, ignition energies and spark plugs. Three kinds of ignition systems are designed and assembled, and the ignition energy is controlled by the variation of the dwell time. Several kinds of spark plugs are also tested. The velocity of flame propagation is measured by a laser deflection method, and the combustion pressure is analyzed by the heat release rate and the mass fraction burnt. The results represent that as the ignition energy is increased by enlarging either dwell time or spark plug gap, the heat release rate and the mass fraction burnt are increased. The electrodes materials and shapes influence the flame kernel development by changing he transfer efficiency of electrical energy to chemical energy. The diameter of electrodes also influences the heat release rate and the burnt mass fraction.
Spark plug ionization signal could be useful in an internal combustion engine as a feedback signal for combustion diagnostics such as misfire detection, knocking detection and lambda control, but the signal has high level of cyclic fluctuation in an internal combustion engine due to residual gas, pressure, temperature, mixture composition in the spark gap. Because of this reason it is very difficult to apply ion signal to commercial engine control. In this Study, a correlation between A/F and spark plug ionization signal was studied in a constant volume chamber. Constant volume chamber with gas phase fuel(Propane) has homogeneous fuel composition , no mixture flow, same pressure and temperature on each test. The results show that mean chemi-ion signal has the highest correlation with A/F and intial pressure change has on effect on the thermal-ion signal and not on chemi-ion signal.
This work deals with the electrical conductivity of dielectric on output parameters such as metal removal rate and surface roughness value of a carbon steel(SM25C) and sintered carbides cut by wire-electrical discharge machining(W-EDM). Dielectric has several functions like insulation, ionization, cooling, the removal of waste metal particles. The presence of minute particles(gap debris) in spark gap contaminates and lowers the breakdown strength of dielectric. And it is considered that too much debris in spark gap is generally believed to be the cause of arcing. Experimental results show that increases of cobalt amount in carbides affects the metal removal rate and worsens the surface quality as a greater quantity of solidified metal deposits on the eroded surface. Lower electrical conductivity of the dielectric results in a lower metal removal rate because the gap between wire electrode and workpiece reduced. Especially, the surface characteristics of rough-cut workpiece and wire electrode were analyzed too. Debris were analyzed also through scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and surface roughness tester. Micro cracks and some of electrode material are found on the workpiece surface by energy dispersive spectrometer(EDS).
A visualization study using the schlieren method is adopted in an optically-accessible, cylindrical constant volume combustion chamber to identify the mechanism of ignition energy and ignition system interaction in spark ignited, lean gasoline-air mixture. In order to research the effects of ignition system on flame propagation, two kinds of ignition system are designed, and several kinds of spark plugs are tested and evaluated. To control the discharge energy, the dwell time is varied. The initial flame development is quantified in terms of 2-D images which provides information about the projected flame area and development velocity as a function of ignition system and discharge energy. The results show that high ignition energy and extended spark plug gap can shorten the combustion duration in lean mixtures. The material, diameter and configuration of electrodes the flame development by changing the transfer efficiency from electrical energy to chemical energy and discharge energy. However these factors do not affect of flame development as much a ignition energy or extended gap does.
